CSAC Suspends Chael Sonnen for One Year
Via press release from the California State Athletic Commission:
The California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) has suspended the license of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighter Chael Sonnen, after Sonnen tested positive for steroids, a banned substance.
A sample from Sonnen's August 6 drug test came back with a high T/E (testosterone-to-estrogen) level, which is indicative of anabolic steroid use. CSAC learned of the results September 2 and ordered a second test, which also came back positive for steroid use. CSAC received test results from the second sample on September 14 and suspended Sonnen two days later. He is suspended for one year. Sonnen has 30 days to appeal the decision.
"The use of anabolic steroids and other banned substances are not tolerated by the commission," said CSAC Executive Officer George Dodd . "Anabolic agents put the health and safety of both the user and his opponents at risk." Sonnen's test was observed in the presence of a CSAC representative and the sample was sent to the World Anti-doping Agency test facility at the University of California , Los Angeles on August 6, 2010 for processing.

Will the UFC suspend him next?

No
He won’t be able to fight for a year, anything the UFC would add to that would just be redundant or excessive.

But he's suspended in California
He can’t fight in another state?

Other states will uphold his suspension and should he fight overseas or in some locale that won’t uphold the suspension, he’ll have a hard time getting fights sanctioned under reputable commissions again.

Okay

Yeah
Most ACs in the states are part of an association (can’t remember what it’s called) that exists in order to uphold suspensions, keep rules consistent and various other issues, just to make boxing, MMA and other combat sports fairly uniform in the way they are sanctioned across America.

Regardless of which states will or won't...
Dana has gone on record stating that he would honor any state commission on suspensions. Chael is not fighting for a year, simple as that. Unless he were to be released from his contract, allowing him to fight in Japan, he’s not fighting. Furthermore, I think Dana sees the value of Sonnen esp after a year has swept much of this from our memories.

“UFC ignores CSAC, Sonnen fights anyway”
Talk about a shitty headline.
I want the strictest testing possible, and I hate cheating, but I still feel sorry as fuck for Chael Sonnen.
We can wait to hear his side of the story but why feel sorry for Chael if he’s the one that broke the rules?
we all have broken the rules at one time or another
and there really wasn’t a victim other than Chael himself. Maybe you see him fuck up and feel bad or good. it depends on whether you are capable of sympathy for what motivated him to do it.
Silva getting beat in the face by him might disagree with that "other than Chael himself"

why feel sorry for him?
He cheated, he got caught, he deserves to be suspended.
Anderson was injured, he didnt use steroids to help him heal faster.
Sonnen used steroids for whatever reason, talked a lot of smack and lost.
It was fun while it lasted Chael, but I hope your day in the sun is done and you dont come back.

I like Nate a lot, and you have to think he can learn something from Chael’s experience against Silva.
I’d be more curious as to the outcome of Silva-Nate II than I would about GSP-Fitch II, and I’m not even entirely sure I want to see Maynard-Edgar I.
Clearly this is a blow for the UFC, Silva, Chael and all of us, but I’m still interested in a lot of the possible fights at MW.

exactly
I hate this notion that there is some sort of natural tradeoff between an excitement and success in MMA.
There are good exciting fighters, good boring fighters, bad exciting fighters and bad boring fighters. Of those four basic typologies only the first three get to have long-lasting careers in MMA.
The result of this is that people thing boring = good, since the only boring fighters they ever really get to see are pretty talented, while many of the exciting fighters they see lose a lot and still have jobs.

I thought that, too
But when you really think about, guys at the top of the LHW, MW and HW divisions are really exciting fighters to watch.
I think this is because the WW and LW divisions are much deeper than any other division in MMA.

Not saying he didn't use PED's
but why is that California seems to be the only state that is showing up with positive test results?
I told you not to f*ck with me.

dont know how it could be connected
but i met with rich franklin and tim sylvia one time on some fan tour and both said that california is the state they like fighting in the least. can’t bring food, their own water, have to be isolated in a room prior to fights. this probably is similar to their approach in testing. they just are a strict ass state.

I'm a little confused...
If I remember correctly when Leben was suspended after his fight with Bisping he only received a 9 month suspension. But Chael gets a year? Is every commissions suspension different?

This is a really weird thought, but some part of me has always thought that Chael left himself entirely too open to getting submitted. He was basically draping his arms across Silva’s chest, knowing how fast Silva’s triangle is. What if Chael made the decision at some point in the fight that he wanted to lose because he knew these results would come out and he’d be stripped of the title anyways?
I’ve got big walnuts. Gorilla nuts.
Nah, I doubt it
Sonnen has a history of poor sub defense, and I would think losing a testing positive would be far worse than winning and testing positive.

There would be a lot less bullshit floating through the airwaves if the CSAC could have kept their mouth shut until issuing a complete statement like this.
If they had the results from the second test on the 14th and issued a suspension on the 16th, there is no excuse for releasing partial information on the 18th and 19th.
