UFC 119 Preview: Matt Mitrione Talks Joey Beltran

"I don’t mean to be offensive in any way but I don’t feel that either of my last opponents were real challenges. With Marcus [Jones], I didn’t see sweeps coming from him. I knew that as soon as I touched his chin he’d sleep."

"I didn’t expect much from (Kimbo Slice). He has a bigger record but his history of opponents (save Seth Petruzelli) was hardly challenging. I knew I was going to smash him."

"I feel that Joey (Beltran) has a tremendous amount of heart and pretty good cardio. I think the best part of his game is his takedown defense, and that he seems to have some kind of power, but I can’t tell you how much power until he punches me. He’s also got strength in his chin."

"I’m not trying to take anyone down. I respect (Joey Beltran), but I’m going to outclass him. I’d be really surprised if he could bully me around. Come next week, he’s going to experience grown man strength. I’ll be punching and kicking. When it comes to touching chins and having power, I think I’ll always have the upper hand. I believe in my hands. And I definitely believe in my shins. When I go for the inside of your leg, it’s going to land."

"I think I’m already ready to test myself against some legit contenders."

I like Mitrione

despite all his antics on TUF. He’s got some real athletic gifts and has shown consistent improvement. That TUF class really had me pumped but mostly were duds except for Schaub and Matt. Roy is what we already knew he is — a top 15 but not top 10 heavyweight.
But Marcus broke my heart. He had some gifts, just no chin.
And the other guys….wow.

This just goes to show me how different fighters are outside of the TUF house, and how the show can make someone look like someone that they are not. With the conditions that Mitrione and the rest of that season were living in (no tv, no computer, no music in the house, no women, lots of food, lots of alcohol), I really feel that the TUF house itself really negatively affects fighting performance and brings out the worst in the people living in the house.
I was impressed that Mitrione was just trying new things against Kimbo like triangle chokes off his back and a gator roll. Mitrione is right though in that Beltran will be the first real UFC caliber opponent that he will be facing in my opinion. Kimbo and Big Baby just didn’t come across as UFC level fighters.

do they really have no TV, computer, and music? i find that hard to believe. if so, that’s just dumb. they should also not have so much alcohol. in a 6 week fighting competition you shouldn’t be drinking, just training and then watchingTV/listening to music/chilling on the computer. if what you say is true, that house is exactly the opposite of what it should be. oh well, i guess ratings are king

They have no outside access, a guy may have an ipod full of music they brought with them but they won’t have a radio or a tv and there is no internet access. That’s the “reality” part of the reality show, they basically put the guys in a bubble with no outside access for 6 weeks.

so, now that the prize is no longer anything good, there actually no reason for any legitimate prospect go go on the show? great

I'm so bullish on Roy after that JDS fight

I could defnitely see him climbing into — and occupying for awhile — the lower half of the top 10 in the HW division.

I’m honestly not sure that I’m buying any of the other guys at this point, Mitrione and Schaub included. This will be a good test I guess.

Tatum: I think he's a good man. I like him. I got nothing against him, but I'm definitely gonna make orphans of his children.

by Dave Strummer on Sep 21, 2010 2:38 PM EDT up reply actions

I probably shouldn't get down on Schaub for what Roy did to him

given the fact that I think Roy is really better than people give him credit for, but Schaub got so handled in that fight. Part of my problem is that I haven’t seen either of his subsequent wins.

by Dave Strummer on Sep 21, 2010 3:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Basically they looked what Roy did to him, except faster. KO’s around the first minute mark of both fights. I’m not a fan but he’s a decent prospect, good hands anyway.. I don’t think he’ll beat Gonzaga though, if he does that will be huge.

by Horselover Fat on Sep 21, 2010 3:49 PM EDT up reply actions

You may very well be right.. but I hope not.

by Horselover Fat on Sep 21, 2010 3:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Gonzaga is still a huge test for him but unless we see a repeat of the Cro-Cop fight

I doubt Gabe makes it out of the first. I think this is a must win for him too so maybe he’ll actually have a game plan but I wouldn’t bet on it

I think standing either man can knock the other one out, and it will most likely be a fast fight.. obviously Napao has great jits if it were to hit the floor, but I doubt he’ll get Schaub down there.

Hell, you might be right. Again, I hope not though.

by Horselover Fat on Sep 21, 2010 4:13 PM EDT up reply actions

I actually thought Schaub looked really good until he ate that overhand right.

but skeptical that he could beat many of the guys who outrank him.

Once he gets some experience you’ll see him in the UFC. Training at Grudge is helping him a lot.

The show may not have made a bunch of stars but it did add a lot of depth to the division.

As much as it was painful to watch at times it seems to be one of the most relevant casts in ages. Shaub, Nelson, Mitrione and Madsen (especially if he beats Yvel) will all stick. Even if they just remain top tier gate keepers, they are still a step up from some of the people that used to be there.

Anyone else surprised that Demico Rogers never got a look after the show?

I love Jon Fitch

I love his toughness, and his philosophy on fighting. The guy goes out there and fights for himself, for the challenge. And so far he has reached every pinnacle except for one.

It's ok to like him

But until those 1187 days without one finish come to an end, then i’ll say hes awesome. Or at least still knows how to finish a fight.

(yes, i’m aware of his resume)

by MrTechnique420 on Sep 21, 2010 6:05 PM EDT up reply actions

If he took more risks, he may not have the impressive resume you’re aware of. He is awesome at what he does. It may not be entertaining to most, but it should at least be impressive.

1187 days (yes, I know they don’t fight every day, but still) without a finish is not impressive to me & i’m no highlight reel craver, but if you refuse to do anything else except take your opponent down and not attempt to pass guard, use EFFECTIVE ground and pound or at least attempt a submission more than once every few fights, you do not impress me whatsoever.

A win is one thing, a decisive victory is another.

by MrTechnique420 on Sep 21, 2010 6:33 PM EDT up reply actions

It’s that “grinding” style that not many people are going to enjoy. No way can I argue that. But he’s only 32, and if he continues to only be outclassed by GSP in his UFC run, this may be a H.O.F guy one day. The man’s got 13 wins there so far. Only people with more are Hughes, Chuck, Randy, Tito, and GSP.

Fitch's only fan. It's lonely, being me.

He went to my rival high school in D/FW . . .

. . . but I root for him anyway. Young prospect with potential. Fought Big Country pretty close (closer than Schaub in my opinion) and lost a close split with the Smotherator Jon Madsen.

Is it possible the UFC cuts people that are still a little raw in order to groom and motivate them?

I can’t believe I just typed that, but I feel like it makes sense for Wren and Duffee. Both will end up back in the UFC sooner or later

I love me some me.
