Karo Parisyan to Return to the UFC and Face Dennis Hallman at UFC 123
Ariel Helwani reports:
Less than a year after Dana White tweeted that Karo Parisyan would never fight again in the UFC, "The Heat" has been welcome back to the organization and offered a fight against Dennis Hallman at UFC 123 in Auburn Hills, Mich.
...
Parisyan told MMA Fighting he "worked hard" over the past few months to get back in the good graces of White and the UFC, until he was finally offered another shot. He said he agreed to a new three-fight deal with the organization.
Parisyan was fired from the UFC for pulling out of his scheduled bout with Dustin Hazelett at UFC 106 at the last minute. He also pulled out of a UFC 88 fight against Yoshiyuki Yoshida on very short notice.
Parisyan has publicly struggled with an anxiety disorder. His only fight since leaving the UFC was at the infamous ImpactFC event in Brisbane where he persuaded the promoter to let him fight earlier on the card than scheduled becuase of his anxiety issues.
He also failed a drug test after UFC 94 that converted his win over Dyon Hung Kim into a no contest.
Karo Parisyan has clearly struggled with a number of issues these last few years. Here's wishing him all the best in his return to the UFC.

This is the first interview
where he doesn’t sound like a pipe-hitting junkie. I’ll always hope for the best for him.
So all it took to convince Dana
was the press conference in Australia where it was painfully obvious that Karo still had serious mental issues, and then his performance against a local kid who took the fight on a day’s notice, where Karo struggled through two rounds before finally putting him away.
I’ve always been a Karo fan, but I don’t think this is a good idea.
Agreed. It’s too early for him. He needs to get his anxiety under control before he even thinks about coming back to the big leagues. I wish him the best, but this might end badly for him.
I think the opiod addiction is a bigger problem than the anxiety
In fact, the anxiety may be a result of the opiod dependency.
I dunno man, I have very severe anxiety and its a bitch.
Spending 8-12 mins standing in a hallway wondering if I should get my mail is not a fun thing to deal with. Im amazed he can even be fighting in public.
People don't understand mental illness
I feel bad for the guy and it may be a bad move for the UFC but let’s be clear if he has an anxiety disorder its not like how most people think it is. You dont get it under control just like that he may never get it under control. If he’s taking medication for it like klonopin im sure the AC wont let him fight or hell fail a drug test right after the fight. He’s having these attacks right before the fights meaning at the very least hes pushing through the panic attack.

I wonder if there is some mandatory treatment included in the contract. Karo is a great talent but unless he gets his head on straight he’s just setting himself up for failure. This will be a story worth keeping an eye on in the lead up to 123.

Actually
Karo is a really nice guy. I got the chance to talk to him this June when I was back home training at Xtreme Couture, and he was training for the ImpactFC fight.
He’s a down to Earth dude, I talked to him for a few minutes and he seemed genuinely interested/ willing to talk to a fan. I really hate when people try to judge what these guys go through and how they perform, it’s not like we’re entitled to them performing as well as we think they should. When they go out there and put on a great performance and really entertain or impress us, it’s an awesome thing, but they aren’t required to satisfy your expectations.

I met Karo
I met Karo at the Toronto Expo, and it still sounded like he had some type of addiction… he was complaing about his back and not wanting to get up….
He also seemed kinda figity, but that could be the drugs… or the getting off the drugs…
I think the whole medication thing
Kind of plays into Karo’s problems no?

Honestly though as a giant Daley mark (maybe the only one left), part of me would prefer Daley landing at Strikeforce. Much as I like to watch the guy fight, I don’t think he has anything for the elite wrestlers at the top of the UFC WW division. In Strikeforce, they could put him in entertaining fights that I’d get for free. Win-win.

I think the difference between Daley and Karo is
Karo wasn’t a douchebag to Dana afterwards. Daley didn’t care about what he did and didn’t even apologize to anybody.
Except he did apologize.
“I’ve had a long flight home to consider my actions and regret the mistake I made on Saturday. I would like to apologise to the UFC and the Athletic Commission for what I’ve done as well as all the fans and sponsors that support me,” the English Daley said in a prepared statement he gave the Telegraph. “I would also like to offer my sincerest apologies to Josh Koscheck who did not deserve the cheap shot I threw. He did what he needed to do in order to win the fight and get the job done, and I foolishly reacted to the situation.”
But don’t let reality get in the way of anything…

i remember reading somewhere that right after the suckerpunch that he didn’t even say anything to Dana when he was confronted about what he did. That apology doesn’t even sound like something Daley would say, his management probably just told him to say that.

Not to mention this recent comment from Daley:
Dana = UFC God. He created his world (ZUFFA UFC) and he rules it with an iron rod…“His world” But not my world, I was still making money, fighting and winning before the UFC and i will carry on doing the same now im not with the UFC.
http://www.bloodyelbow.com/2010/8/31/1659979/quote-of-the-day-paul-semtex-daley
Daley appears to not care much about Dana’s world and prefers his world outside the UFC.
Just BE.
Ultimately, if Dana thinks he can make money of Daley, and Daley is willing to be a little bit humble about it, I could easily see Daley back in the UFC. Dana doesn’t want too many of these shows where he doesn’t get to hand out KO of the night bonuses.
Tatum: I think he's a good man. I like him. I got nothing against him, but I'm definitely gonna make orphans of his children.
I have an idea!
Maybe Dana shouldn’t say that certain fighters will NEVER come back. Im sure that if the situation is right for the UFC then they will have Daley back. It’s kind of like him saying that Chuck Liddell will never fight in the UFC again. I don’t believe it! It seems like Dana just wants to say stuff like that right after the fights just so his opinion is known. But we all know that you can count on him to change his mind for the benefit of the company.
when the competition gets stiff, Daley ain’t knockin nobody out.

O rly?
People are talking about Kampman for a title shot even as we speak. Daley slapped the taste right out of his mouth. He doesn’t have the best track record against high-level wrestlers, but I’d give him a good shot to put a good half of the UFC’s active WW division to sleep.
Tatum: I think he's a good man. I like him. I got nothing against him, but I'm definitely gonna make orphans of his children.
Umm
The good half of the UFC’s active WW division are high level wrestlers so I doubt that.
"a" not "the"
Conservatively speaking, Daley would be a favorite over half of the division as it is currently comprised. When he does win, it is more often by knockout than not. He has knocked out Haslett, who is decent, and Kampmann, who people say is in line for a shot at the title. Saying he can’t knock out anybody good is demonstrably wrong.
Tatum: I think he's a good man. I like him. I got nothing against him, but I'm definitely gonna make orphans of his children.
then why is Koscheck the opposing coach on the upcoming season of TUF? Don’t get me wrong, Daley has the power to knockout any WW in any promotion, but when it comes to a certain caliber of technique and talent, Daley just isn’t there yet.
by MrTechnique420 on Sep 2, 2010 6:13 PM EDT up reply actions
He'll never be there with the wrestling

It's kind of splitting hairs
Even as a fan, I fully understand Daley’s limitations as a fighter. He is always going to have a hard time stopping the take downs of super elite grapplers like Kos or Shields. But both of those guys are top-five talents. There are plenty of guys in the top 10 or 20 who would be in deep waters against Daley, who I still think is the best pure striker in the division.
Tatum: I think he's a good man. I like him. I got nothing against him, but I'm definitely gonna make orphans of his children.
Always been a fan of how Karo fights and I hope he can do well. He should probably take a page out of Sonnen’s book and start working with a sports psychologist. (even though that hasn’t cured Chael)

I'm happy that the UFC is giving Karo another chance
But it’s clear he hasn’t gotten his demons under control. He was a mess at the ImpactFC presser. Anxiety isn’t something easy to get over and I’d expect if he does show up (I’m willing to gamble he doesn’t) that he has Octogon jitters. He’s gotten over addiction to pain medication (my father is a doctor, he was astounded by the prescriptions Karo had, said he could have lost his license to practice if he prescribed that to a patient) but the anxiety is there.
IF, and it’s a big if, but IF he is able to get past Hallman I’d expect either a fight with Nate Diaz or Matt Hughes (a fight that should have happened 5 years ago).

I like those matchups
I feel like Diaz would break Karo mentally with just his mean mug though. At least the Karo of now.
He looks so small in that interview!
Honestly this is something about the sport no one really thinks about
A lot of these fighters have demons, be it rough upbringings or addictions or medical disorders like anxiety. As someone who has all three I can honestly say it’s not easily fixed ever and it’s a fight everyday to put on a smile and have my friends think I’m okay. Karo has the pressures of providing for his family on top of everything else and I really don’t think he’s ever going to get over this. He isn’t able to walk away from the sport because he needs the money but the sport is what’s causing a lot of his issues. As fans we expect to see these guys fight 3-4 times a year and put on amazing performances every time. If they don’t, we then come here and talk shit.
I hope Karo can find some happiness in his life because there are things beyond fighting.

Well said.
I like Karo and love his fighting style. He’s an exciting and talented fighter especially when he’s on his game. I was disappointed with him pulling out of fights mostly because then I couldn’t see him fight.
But I did mean what I said about a Diaz vs Karo match-up. The Diaz bros seem so mentally strong. It would be exciting to see Diaz vs Karo if that did happen.
So you know
Don’t always assume it’s Danas decision to bring back fighters. Like in the case of Gabe Ruediger it was Joe Silvas call and most of the time it is. But, i like Karo and i definitely like his style. Hope he crushes Hallman.

So Karo Parisyan gets another shot but not Paul Daley?
I think Dana White should have let Paul Daley back before Karo. At least I think Daley has his head on a little bit straighter than Karo…
Surprising news for sure, gotta say i’m conflicted here. I’m as big a Karo fan as their is and will always root for him no matter what. But he’s a mess and even after his last fight he just seemed to be in just as bad a shape as ever so this could be a huge mistake on the UFC’s part. I specializes in grammar fail.
One of the biggest oopps moments by Rogan and Goldie is in Karo’s fight against GSP. It was GSPs debut in UFC, and all the hype was actually with Karo at that point. They were all on Karo’s nuts until about the end of the second round when Goldie says “He might be losing this fight”, Rogan then goes, “he is definitly losing this fight”
Might not be a bad idea for UFC to have another fighter ‘on deck’ for the Parisyan-Hallmann fight – just in case Karo goes back to being Karo…
Don't like wrestling in MMA? Go watch K-1.
Can't deal with the occasional boring fight? Let me introduce you to ROH.
