Ring Psychology: Bas Rutten on Don Frye, Billy Blanks, Street Fighting and His New Status as a Role Model
In the fourth edition of Ring Psychology, Dave Walsh and Jonathan Snowden talk with MMA reporter Josh Nason who covered UFC 118 live in Boston. Nason talks about what it's like to cover the sport's biggest promotion and then breaks down the show. The guys also discuss how his second loss in a row changes BJ Penn's legacy.
Then, as it tends to do when he's around, things get interesting when the legendary Bas Rutten joins the show to talk about his amazing announce team with Don Frye at Shark Fights 13, Billy Blanks, street fighting, and his new status as a role model.
On who could possibly control a broadcast booth at Shark Fights 13 with both Bas and Don Frye:
I have no idea, but I think I am going to be the person who tries to contain the situation a little bit. Because this could go really bad. Like, really funny, but for some people my humor - my wife always says 'You're a psychopath. You know the only reason people laugh is because they are afraid of you.' And Don is a little bit crazy too.
On changing his image to work with the Cartoon Network:
Needless to say, they don't like me to be over the top violent anymore. No middle fingers and "f-bombs" and all that stuff now. Thank God I didn't do that as much anyway. Still, you don't want to have posters now where you say 'F Terrorists' like those ones I used to have. I simply can't do that anymore.
Rutten begins at approximately the 37 minute mark. You can also hear Dave's dog in the background and lots of other tomfoolery. I swear we are cleaning up our act for the next show. Download the show on I Tunes or listen to it streaming with our partners at AngryMarks. Next week I'll be back with improved audio and more exciting guests. Thanks for listening.
After the jump a selection from the legendary Bas Rutten's Lethal Street Fighting as discussed on the show, as well as a classic fight.

ah Bas
he was definitely the best thing about Pancrase, well one of many great things about 90’s Pancrase, I just wish he’d made it to the UFC sooner. Rutten vs Frye in 1997 would’ve been money!

That was a pretty good show.
That’s the first time I heard you speak. You sound young. That’s definatly now how I pictured your voice.
On a site with Kid Nate, everyone is young!

I got to meet Bas the other day in Boston....
Even though there were much bigger stars there… Bas was prob the coolest dude to talk to other then Jon Jones. He told me I was daring to wear the pink shirt I had on to an MMA event. lol. He then said how he use to have pink boxing gloves that said “Go Ahead” on the right glove, and “Say Something” on the left glove. Bas is the man!

I love him narrating his own fights
He’s hilarious and he should be so much more famous/successful than he already is, he deserves it.
He is really the best. Every time I talk to him I learn something new about Pancrase that makes me immediately want to rewrite Total MMA. He’s fun to be around.

Guys, I am working to improve the quality of these shows. It would be awesome if you could give me a courtesy download so we can keep the ship moving while we make these repairs. The guests are there and I have ideas in mind to make this show a real community show….

I laugh at his jokes
because I don’t want to get liver punched.
I read an article about why Rutten used a very unorthodox stance where his feet were pretty much parallel, and how he felt it helped him in MMA, and didn’t take away from his power. It was pretty awesome stuff.
I’ve got big walnuts. Gorilla nuts.
Its a magazine interview
Can’t remember which though, sorry

Was Bas a cheerleader before MMA?

I want Kim Winslow or Tan Dan to ref Tito Ortiz' next loss.

Ha! Dave is a giant man though, so you tell him!

That's a PC statement and no I will not tell him in person, just like I wouldn't tell Andy he sounds like a tool.

Hey my first name is Andy! Are you talking about Anderson Silva? Either way I’m ok with it because you said I’m terrifying enough to not get it said to my face.
Yes I was referring to Silva but if you sound like a tool as well own it.
that was supposed to be a joke but then I guess it’s not funny if you have to explain it. Oh well Don Frye FTW!

Bas is the man
I’m sad the interview with him wasn’t a little longer. “Lethal Street Fighting” is a timeless classic, though I’ve never actually practiced any of the maneuvers I’ve watched it many times just for fun.
I had To save some stuff for another venture. Hopefully you will read it in time and enjoy it.

Aha, I see. But, what do you mean, read it in time?

It will be part of a product I hope to create down the road…

I’m supposed to sign the deal Wednesday. Looking at probably first quarter 2012 maybe? That’s a long time to wait I know. :)
by Jonathan Snowden on Sep 3, 2010 9:39 PM EDT up reply actions
Since I have no idea at all what you’re talking about, except that Bas will be involved is some manner, I don’t think I’ll be holding my breath :) But I’m guessing some sort of book, and it will surely turn out fine. I’d ask you to remind me later on but I’m guessing the info will come by me either way. :P
by Horselover Fat on Sep 4, 2010 5:45 AM EDT up reply actions
Sorry. I don’t want to say too much until it is official. But I may be writing a book that will have a lot of Rutten and Pancrase stuff in it.
by Jonathan Snowden on Sep 4, 2010 11:09 AM EDT up reply actions
Yeah I understand that, no problem. Definitely sounds like a cool project :) That whole era deserves some more love and documentation. Again, good luck to you sir!

Got to love this guy, total bad-ass and i have always thought of him as being real funny.
"Everyone has a game plan, untell they get hit." -Mike Tyson
He bought Blanks Tae Bo gym in LA. People were showing up and the guys would be out for lunch for like three hours. Then he talks about parking meters. But it is Bas, so it ruled.
