James Toney Wants to Keep Fighting MMA, Kimbo Slice More Than Willing to Fight Him

James Toney's trainer claims that Toney showed up for training camp weighing almost 40 pounds more than his eventual fight weight of 237 pounds. (Photo by Josh Hedges/Zuffa LLC/Zuffa LLC via Getty Images)

The UFC tried to put Kimbo Slice and James Toney together, but Toney turned it down. Now although the UFC is done with both fighters, it appears there is an opportunity to book that fight. For his part, Kimbo is open to facing Toney, via MMA Fighting:

"I never heard anything about me fighting James Toney, but you know, like I said, again, I'll fight anybody, man. C'mon, everybody knows that about me from my street-fighting days. Put anybody in front of me, train me to be the best, I'll fight the best. That's one thing about Kimbo Slice that everybody knows."

And Toney's trainer Trevor Sherman, says there is also interest from other promotions in Toney fighting more MMA, again via MMA Fighting:

"I still love James," Sherman said. "I hope he doesn't stop doing MMA, and if the UFC does release him ... trust me -- there's plenty of interest."

Sherman also says that he had wanted Kimbo for Toney:

"I wanted him to fight Kimbo -- I thought he should have done that as a tune-up, but James didn't want a tune-up," Sherman said. "It was his first fight, and it was against one of the best. Randy wouldn't allow any room for error. Randy is probably the best ever at game planning."

Even though the former EliteXC leadership -- ie Gary and Jared 'Skala' Shaw are currently embarking on a boxing career for Kimbo, one would think that there's enough interest in a Kimbo Slice vs James Toney mma fight to get that booked. It would add a lot of drawing power to say, a Strikeforce card on Showtime or even CBS.

The funny thing is, even though Toney vs Slice is still a viable fight economically, I think Dana White made the right call to dump both men from the UFC. He's already gotten a good squeeze out of each fighter and it would potentially erode the promotion's reputation for quality to go back for more.

Booking Kimbo Slice in a boxing bout against James Toney would make no sense. Toney would crush him in all likelihood and with it, any chance to milk Kimbo as a draw in the boxing ring, where Toney hasn't drawn in years.

Sapp is a decent opponent, but how about someone who has the ground acumen to match Toney…Houston Alexander.

This is a fight that’s made for Strikeforce.Neither one of these guys have anything left, but people will tune in to watch.

Slice vs.Toney

If Strikeforce gets this fight they must air it on CBS.

by TERRENCEFROMSOUTHEAST on Sep 2, 2010 12:26 AM EDT reply actions

I'd love this to happen

Because the UFC would counterprogram (hopefully with a live show) and I’d probably watch that instead of that disaster.

I love this fight.

Does Toney have to power to KO Kimbo in one shot? It’s possible. Does Kimbo have a takedown besides the KIMBOPLEX™ and does he have enough submission knowhow to do finish it on the ground? Unlikely.

I’ll take Toney by KO in the only winnable fight MMA fight available.

Kimbo finished off Ray Mercer on the ground, and Ray’s punching power is a LOT more dangerous than Toney’s.

Bad fight for Kimbo.

Imagine Toney against a (mainly) stand-up fighter like Pat Barry or Cro Cop. Now that would be sick.

by J_Maddux on Sep 2, 2010 12:50 AM EDT reply actions

People keep suggesting it and I think they all hate Toney’s knees very much. No way this guy is fast enough to get inside with a guy wailing on your legs.

This would retire Toney for sure.

I'm sick of hearing this.

Toney should do the right thing and RETIRE from boxing and MMA. Don’t give him high level strikers who would cripple his legs.

Bad fight for Kimbo?

Kimbo demolished Ray Mercer. Ray is one hell of a lot more dangerous than James Toney AND Kimbo has three more years of training under his belt. Kimbo would finish Toney early and take no damage doing it.

by Steve4192 on Sep 2, 2010 1:08 AM EDT up reply actions

Agreed.

I have to imagine Ferguson would take Toney down and finish him inside of the first round.

I have no problem with Toney fighting on smaller shows

Its where he should of started in the first place, he will never turn into a world beater but could make serious coin in 2 or 3 years time fighting other freaks, random scrubs and up and comers.

Making your mma debut in a UFC Co main event is fucking silly no matter how you cut it.

kimbo beats toney, no problem

he can defend a punch, not worry about takedowns, knees, or kicks. He’ll close the distance, clinch, knee, takedown, and maybe even pull off a crucifix, since he’s so experienced with it.

Being overrated is overrated.

by bobby g on Sep 2, 2010 2:05 AM EDT reply actions

Nah. Losing to a Greco Roman Olympic alternate with 13 years top class MMA experience on the ground is one thing, Kimbo is another matter all together! If Toney lost to Kimbo in any form of combat sport he should never be allowed to leave his house ever again! Toney by 1st round KO.

by sheikybaby on Sep 2, 2010 8:26 AM EDT up reply actions

Ray Mercer is a former gold medalist and HW champion, yet Kimbo beat him with ease despite only having a few months of MMA training. James Toney would get the same treatment.

by Steve4192 on Sep 2, 2010 9:18 AM EDT up reply actions

Strikeforce on CBS could flipping nail this

Use two weeks prior to the event to do a 2-part mini-documentary on the fighters, getting real fuckin’ melancholy and personal and being all “Yo so Toney is the falling star, Kimbo, he’s the rising star… and man… it’s like Toney sees himself in Kimbo, he sees where he used to be.”

Such great potential for amazing fight lead up. To the point where the actual capabilities of the fighters doesn’t matter! That’s the important bit – never let the casual viewer know that Kimbo and Toney are not very good at MMA. Make it about the personality clash and their stories.

by Pyrgz Krum on Sep 2, 2010 5:04 AM EDT reply actions

I’ts nice that Toney wants to keep at it, and I think it shows perhaps a dedication that people didn’t think was there. Be that as it may he was just turrrible, and considering his age and “mass” I don’t think there will be much room for improvement, at least not past a point of him only being able to hang with empty cans and dudes so washed up they can’t even tie their own shoes anymore.

As far as Toney vs Kimbo, considering the work Kimbo did on Mercer I can only imagine that up against Toney even Kimbo will come out looking like GSP…a larger…blacker…tattoed GSP…with arthritic knees…and male patter baldness…and a black rug growing on his chest shaped like an arrow pointing directly to his weak spot.

Josh Barnett is a thrice proven juicer with a pro wrestling mindset and a personality that would lead you to believe he's never had a romantic encounter that didn’t start with "you gotta pay me upfront."

Toney is 100% clueless off his back. Kimbo could mount him straight from a takedown something like Randy did and punch him out very quickly

by four20 on Sep 2, 2010 7:46 AM EDT reply actions

Kimbo wins easily. Kimboplex → GnP to stoppage (or submission)

Also, stop suggesting that Toney fights a good kickboxer! Did you not see his stance? He will be legkicked to death very fast, with a resulting TKO from ref having mercy or additional GnP once he can’t get up anymore.

James Toney is 42 years old, out of shape and over the hill. He’s also not some kind of magical KO god where everyone goes to sleep as soon as he touches their chin, that’s just what UFC marketing machine wanted you to believe. Add in non-existent TDD and ground game, poor stance (for MMA), and you have someone who will lose to everyone who does anything else than just straight boxing with him (like leg kicks, takedowns, submissions).
