UFC 119 Preview: Frank Mir Disses Cro Cop's Rear Naked Choke

The choke in question. Photo by Tracy Lee for Cage Writer

The rear naked choke that he nailed on Pat Barry was not a good choke by anybody's standards. He reached over the far side of the body, he didn't secure the hips, he didn't have any kind of control, he just reached for it desperate and grabbed it. Barry had a broken hand, broken foot and was fatigued. Pat Barry needs to improve his ground skills also, his ground skills are still... you know... improving.

The problem is that Frank Mir has fallen in love with his striking. Hopefully he knows not to use it too much with Cro Cop.

He is absolutely right. The problem is, it was still awesome for CC. It would never work against Mir, however.

by BJJDenver on Sep 18, 2010 11:24 AM EDT up reply actions

Easily

When a submission is so easily there for the taking you don’t have to get fancy and technically sound with it. If you can get it sloppy and fast cause it’s there to be had you throw it on any way u can. The only time it needs to be technically sound is when u have to fight tooth and nail for it then get your hooks in do what u gotta do etc. But like I said if you can just slap that s.o.b on do it.

by Bloodsport on Sep 18, 2010 12:11 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions   1 recs

I mostly agree

although a really excellent jiu jitsu artist would probably be able to slap it on faster doing it right than doing it wrong. But your point is 100% valid. If a technique worked, it was a correct technique for that particular situation, even if it’s a bad habit in general. Not everything that happens in a fight will be textbook, and that’s ok.

I consider myself a softcore fan.

It would never work against Mir, however.

Even if Mir had a broken hand, broken foot, and was gassed?

by ufc4 on Sep 18, 2010 9:20 PM EDT up reply actions

I would guess probably not. It is not just the defense, but not leaving your neck open like that in the first place. I doubt Mir would make that error.

by BJJDenver on Sep 19, 2010 1:50 PM EDT up reply actions

well

Cro Cop isn’t exactly a sub machine though, I’m sure most grapplers would be able to get away from that sub and the way it was set up, but that’s beside the point. He’s not really a grappler.

the following two things are signs of weaknesses:
stay silent when it's needed to speak up, and speak up when it's needed to stay silent.

by Orcus on Sep 18, 2010 11:28 AM EDT up reply actions

Most grapplers would not be able to get away from that...

if they had the shit beaten out of them. This isn’t technical BJJ so it just matters whether you get the sub or not.

I find that hard to believe

that a high level grappler could not get away from that RNC when it wasn’t greatly set up, no matter how beat up they may be

Really?

Apparently you have no idea what your talking about. Saying that unless it’s greatly set up a high level grappler wouldn’t get caught no matter how beat up they are is ignorant to say. When your battered been rocked and you’ve lost blood your equilibrium is off it’s very easy to get caught no matter how good you may or may not be. Skill gos out the back door once your body can’t take anymore it’s simply that you may be a champion grappler but if your body is shutting down cause you’ve been battered there’s nothing they can physically do it has nothing to do with skill level. If they’re not battered it’s s different story skill would b everything.

Considering how much time he has spent training with adequate BJJ World Champ Fabricio Werdum, you might think he would be more technical than someone who has never trained but watched the UFC. Just saying.

Again, this still does not take away from the awesomeness that occurred that night.

by BJJDenver on Sep 18, 2010 11:38 AM EDT up reply actions

I wouldn't be suprised

If all Cro Cop worked on with Werdum was his BJJ defense

by Dr.Glaze on Sep 18, 2010 11:43 AM EDT up reply actions

he definitely has knowledge on BJJ

but I’d think that’s different than being good at it, he can train 10 years straight, but if he never competes in grappling he can’t put the things he learned into practice (correct me if I’m wrong, given your nick I’m sure you may know more than me regarding this). Most people that brings in BJJ guys to train with will learn how to defend subs, and they may learn how to apply them too, but I think they’ll usually have many guys to train with, Cro Cop only had Werdum.

the following two things are signs of weaknesses:
stay silent when it's needed to speak up, and speak up when it's needed to stay silent.

by Orcus on Sep 18, 2010 11:43 AM EDT up reply actions

Good points, but I would have to assume he worked something as basic as a RNC. Granted much of your early BJJ training is learning to defend and survive, but basic chokes and armbars are usually included.

Once again, he could have done the worst choke ever and it still would have been awesome!

Although I agree with Mir’s assessment, I’m not sure what his point was.

by BJJDenver on Sep 18, 2010 11:46 AM EDT up reply actions

Thanks

this post got me to read the full interview, in which Mir is actually very respectful of Cro Cop and doesn’t come off like a douche.

Glad to help. I highly encourage everyone to read the full interviews of any of the more controversial fighters (Mir, Carwin, Penn, etc.).

They seem a lot less like d-bags when their quotes are taken in context.

Mir is dumb

It’s not like Cro Cop is going to try and grapple with him, it does no good to insult a STRIKERS gorund game.

well to Frank's credit

The card is ok, but Mir/CC has little appeal. I’m just trying to decide which one of my friends is going to buy this, lol.

by BJJDenver on Sep 18, 2010 11:39 AM EDT up reply actions

And I am interested in seeing how Mir comes in. Will he take CC lightly and be out of shape? Will he have dropped weight in his quest for the MW crown? Will he still be massive after packing on 25 pounds of muscle in 2 weeks? Should be an indicator of where his head is at.

by BJJDenver on Sep 18, 2010 11:41 AM EDT up reply actions

I think Mir will be prepared, he’s trying to get back into title shot contention and he knows this plus one more good win would probably put him right in line after JDS, I think he’ll be ready to go and run right through CC.

Me too, when he’s not putting on his douchebag act he always has interesting and well-thought out stuff to say, his analysis of Cro-cop in that interview was pretty good.

I’d like Cro-cop to win, but realistically I don’t think he has much of a chance. I’ll be very surprised if he does somehow get the better of Mir in this fight.

You don’t think if Cro Cop were to knock Mir out in a horrible way he would get a quick title shot?

by judonerd on Sep 18, 2010 12:27 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

No but it could earn him a top contender fight.

This is probably the best stylistic match up Cro Cop will get in the upper echelon of the heavyweight division.

by Polyhedron on Sep 18, 2010 1:09 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Contender fight against who?

If Brock holds serve, he’ll get Cain, JDS, and probably a Carwin rematch? I think Cro-Cop prolly has to beat two more guys before he gets a title fight.

and on top of that, he got a sub of the night bonus. If I was cro-cop I would be damn happy with that!!

He was asked about CC’s ground game and merely offered a critique of his win against Barry, nothing he said was incorrect.

by ufc4 on Sep 18, 2010 9:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Cro Cop will win this fight.

Mir will not be able to take him down very easily and when he gets him on the ground CC will scramble and get up quickly. CC will keep this fight on the feet and Mir can not hang with CC in the striking department.

Cro Cop by 2nd round TKO.

by Polyhedron on Sep 18, 2010 1:06 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

I love when Mir criticizes the amateurish technique of his opponents (such as Brock or Carwin) and then gets the crap beat out of him by who he thinks is an infinitely inferior opponent. Unfortunately that’s not going to happen in this case as CroCop just doesn’t have the skills to make Mir eat his words. I predict Mir is actually going to make this look easy and it’s not going to be a good fight because CC will never put Mir in any sort of danger.

by DerSpiegel on Sep 18, 2010 1:15 PM EDT reply actions

Cro Cop’s only other BJJ submission win was a guillotine in 2004. Nobody expects his technique to be perfect. 20 of his 27 wins were KOs and TKOs. Please let it be 21.
