Quote of the Day 2: Josh Barnett: "I Like the Idea That I Could Be Out There Killing Someone's Hero"

Photo

"I don't feel a need to cater to people for any reason whatsoever. I treat those that are my fans respectfully and try to to what I can for them as an athlete. But I don't things for other people. I do them for myself. To do them for any other reason is insincere and a counterproductive way of going about things.

"I don't owe anyone anything, and they don't owe anything to me. Those that are my fans, I'll do what I can for them. But at the end of the day, my job is to go out there and [expletive] people up. That's my goal. There are going to be people who dig that. There are going to be people that hate it, and that just makes me even happier.

"I don't really think about haters and encouragement. I'm a guy that likes conflict and causing grief. So if I feel like I'm making somebody's life miserable sometimes, for what I feel is arbitrary and ridiculous reasons, then I kind of feel a need to make it even worse for them. I can't help it. It's how I am. Basically, I like the idea that I could be out there killing someone's hero."

he may have played a small role in bein the straw that broke the camels back with affliction
but if you believe he single handedly tanked the organization then you’re silly

Course he did.

They had an all or nothing event lined up that had generated decent heat.

He killed it, and duly them.

Good luck, Strikeforce.

afflictions poor management and go for broke business plan killed affliction
there were plenty of possibilities for replacements

they would have gone under after the show regardless

they had a choice
switch back to making t shirts and revive their sponsorships with the ufc
or completely go bust

Honestly, I don’t give a shit how poorly Affliction was run. At the end of the day Barnett pissed positive again (seriously, you’re a pro athlete it’s not that hard to hide it or cycle off) and Affliction ended because of it. End of story.

And seriously, I’m just making a joke with my initial statement.

i know you were just making a joke

and i was just sharing my point of view

affliction didn’t end because barnett pissed hot affliction would have ended anyway
probably after they lost more money putting trilogy on

Who gives a shit if they were gonna lose more money? Even if it’s not Barnett’s fault that Affliction folded he still cost us one helluva MMA card.

that card had a lot of problems

they canceled the big tim fight because mercer had knocked him out
vitor pulled out of the fight with gegard
gomi and cooper couldn’t agree on a catchweight

barnett was pulled from the card ten days ahead of the fight which would have been ample time for a replacement to be found. they said they couldn’t market a new opponent but they hadn’t really marketed barnett and lets be honest almost no one who would have bought the ppv gave a shit if barnett was the one getting beaten or if it was someone else.

i don’t like barnett but that whole “he killed affliction” thing takes blame away from the people who were really to blame for affliction folding……..

And with his history of taking 'roids

It may only take a flick of his wrist towards Fedor to crumple him.

Mo Johnston finally fired. Let the house cleaning and road to success begin.

by SSreporters on Sep 16, 2010 11:15 PM EDT reply actions

I got in a bit of an argument on Twitter one time with Barnett. I was questioning why he’s fighting dudes like Mighty Mo and Geronimo Dos Santos when he’s obviously way above their level. Basically his reasoning was it’s just to get a paycheck which I thought was a crap excuse because he could get a paycheck fighting guys who would actually give him a good fight. I didn’t even bother asking why he squandered his biggest payday ever against Fedor by juicing.

by ufc4 on Sep 16, 2010 11:28 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think he's insecure.

He seemed very confident and outgoing when I saw him. This is his character though. The pro wrestler slash metalhead turned up to 11.

Guy seems more immature than insecure to me, like a 15 year old trapped in a 32 year olds juiced up body.

by ufc4 on Sep 16, 2010 11:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Are you basing that on personal experience or just media you've seen?

That probably sounds dickish, but I’m honestly curious. I think he seems like he’s overcompensating based solely on what he puts out to the press, but get a very different impression from him in person.

No, just from what I’ve seen in interviews and that type of thing. It could just all be an act of course but if it is he’s a better actor than most of the other guys in his profession.

by ufc4 on Sep 16, 2010 11:56 PM EDT up reply actions

The guy totally has an act

and I think this is part of it. He loves his fans. A buddy of mine met him and reminded him of three years prior when they had seen each other, and Barnett recalled minute details of the encounter. He treats his fans really well and is a great guy to be around. In my head, I see him chuckling and saying “How was that? Pretty good?” to the reporter after the cameras went off and he gave this statement.

You might be right, the only problem is he keeps fucking up and losing a lot of these fans that he cares so much about.

by ufc4 on Sep 17, 2010 12:24 AM EDT up reply actions

What I don't get about you is

You take issue with how people view a fighter when they view him based on what they’ve seen of him. What they’ve seen of him is essentially what he wants them to see. The fact that you know every fighter ever and are totally connected (which is basically having a fishing pole for poon) doesn’t change the fact that when someone sees him, they’ll think “Wow, after seeing him, I take only from this that he is a giant bag of dick and is wildly immature.”

And then God created Saturn... and he liked it, so he put a ring on it.
