UFC Fight Night 22 Results: Rousimar Palhares TKO'd by Nate Marquardt

Nate_20marquardt_20-_20003_medium

It was immediately clear - if it wasn't before - what the strategies were going to be.

The first shot was a charging uppercut, but didn't do much damage. Marquardt had a charging jab of his own, but also to not much avail. However, a stuffed shot from Palhares is reversed in scramble with the Brazilian on top. In a leg lock attempt where Palhares fell back from guard, Marquardt immediately slipped out. From there the Greg Jackson product laned a massive punch on top. Marquardt continued to punch until referee Herb Dean stopped the fight.

In the replay, however, it seemed that Palhares indicated Marquardt was illegally greased, which aided his easy escape from the leg lock. According to commentator Joe Rogan, the commission, referee and ringside physician all checked Marquardt for greasing and none found evidence.

The fight was stopped at 3:28 of round 1.

Palhares was dumb for pointing it out during the fight. He should’ve defended himself at all times.

Props to Nate for taking advantage

your article is pretty misleading

Rogan super clearly stated that he was checked for 3 or 4 people before and after the fight. You make it sound like no one will ever know.

Palhares missed a hold and got his shit rocked.

Anyone with a brain knows that there was no intention to cheat. A first time corner man screwed up and put vaseline in the wrong place (vaseline that is legal when used properly).

Look. If any of u guys think that this superficial grease check at the end of the fight proves there is no possiblity of anything shady, then you’re crazy.

PLenty of other ways…eating greasy foods, bathing in baby oil the day before. This only proves he didn’t put actual vaseline on right before the fight. he got out of that submission like it was nothing.

Surely eating greasy food has its own set of negative effects

I find it hard to believe a fighter would eat a lot of greasy food just to get slightly more slippery during the fight. The negative factors for your career would outweigh the questionable benefits

So since it is allowable, I always thought it would be smart if they warmed up to sweat a little before the fight. If the UFC doesn’t make it illegal, why shouldn’t anyone do it? Silly to avoid using any legitimate techniques to win. Water can be poured all over the athlete before and between rounds, too…

I think Bj and his lawyer were right.

there needs to be commission supervised hot showers right before the fight, then that person that supervised walks the fighters to the ring. Greasing is to grappling what loading your gloves is to striking.

Paul Harris has been grappling for along time. He knows how human skin is supposed to feel. Something wasn’t right.

The only think that made it sweeter was him once again claiming that another guy greased because he couldn’t tap them this guy and BJ should hang out together.

Though i’m sure that won’t stop the crybaby brigade from reaching and making all sorts of ridiculous accusations without any proof. But in the end that doesnt’ matter because Palhares had this coming because of his crap and he’s going to be thinking about this loss for a long time.

Was it clear that Hendo was greasing too since Palhares accused him after not being able to do shit to him in their fight. Palhares doesn’t know shit, if he did he wouldn’t have let his guard down in the middle of a fight and gotten knocked the fuck out that is the only thing clear as day to me.

Yeah, because Nate has no experience at the elite level of MMA competition.

And he certainly would not have drilled heelhook defense like a madman once he found out Palhares was his opponent. Try harder.

by Enmascarado on Sep 16, 2010 1:05 AM EDT up reply actions

Maybe this wouldn't be a problem

if Palhares wouldn’t have specifically gone for the heel hook from what looked like side control and instead did some GnP or set up an armbar or a choke. I have no idea why he ignored the dominant position he was in to go for a move that’s more difficult to hold on to than pretty much any other sub. Such a disappointment.

Why he didn’t wait till the end of the round is beyond me, but that was a terrible way to lose. Terrible way to win too. Not sure you could even edit that into Nate’s highlight reel without new people wondering what the buck happened there.

If a dude fails a steroid test, throws a punch after a fight against Almeida, is part of a camp that has been accused of greasing a couple of times, there is one of the most bizarre greasing accusations in history, and the only thing clearing him of suspician is the Texas fucking athletic commission, I’d say its fair to speculate.

It’s entirely a non-issue. Speculating about it is silly.

Herb looked at him after the fight. In an environment where everybody in the room was running as fast as they can away from a controversy.

Keep your conspiracy theories.

Herb Dean believes in the integrity of the sport. If you think he was coerced or influenced into lying in those 2 minutes between the end of the fight and the post fight interview, you’re fuckin’ nutter butters.

Anybody perpetuating this line of thinking is impugning the character and professional abilities of both Nate Marquardt and Herb Dean. Both of them have proven that they are very good at what they do, which is a much more reasonable explanation than “he cheated and everybody colluded to cover it up in 2 minutes or less!”

Its not a conspiracy theory, and that’s not how I wanted to make it seem. Dean got to look at him after the fight, after the grease would have been mostly dissipated, for five seconds with everybody yelling at him.

Did Nate grease, probably not. But there are enough factors here where its reasonable to question.

You're telling me that 30 seconds after the grease supposedly changed the nature of the fight

it was mostly dissipated? Whatever. I’m done with this.

Yes, I’m telling you a guy rubbing an arm pit on the leg is going to dissipate a lot of it. You don’t have to talk to me like a child. I’m also done with this.

Pfft, and wtf are you, a grease expert?

Drop it. You look silly.

Yeah, just because multiple officials have cleared Nate of wrongdoing doesn't mean we can't speculate.

I mean, it’s not like Palhares isn’t known for shitty, unsportsmanlike behavior and instant accusations of greasing as soon as his elite opponents manage to avoid his heelhooks. I mean, it’s not like he goes for the heelhook every damn fight, so how could his opponents be ready for it? IT MUST BE GREASE because Rousimar “Hendo Nate is Greasing!!” Palhares says so and we must ignore any and all of the officials that have cleared Marquardt of the accusations. Jesus man.

Wasn't everyone bashing the commision?

I think they were all saying they’re incompetent and stuff, but now they say something and suddenly their words are facts.

I'm late to this, but...

Palhares CLEARLY wasn’t looking anywhere near Herb Dean right before he got socked in the mouth. Who the hell WAS he talking to?
