Bobby Lashley: "If I Didn't Have These Problems, It Would Have Been a Pretty Quick Win for Me"

Bobby Lashley talks to Ben Fowlkes at MMAFighting.com about his TKO loss to Chad Griggs at Strikeforce: Houston:

"I already asked for a rematch, because when you have certain events like I did that sort of hindered me from being able to open up and fight, I've got to go back," Lashley said. "I'd hate for them to use that fight to boost somebody's career, saying, 'Okay, he beat Bobby,' because that wasn't really the case. If I didn't have these problems, and I'd been able to go out there and fight, I think it would have been a pretty quick win for me. But I just didn't have anything in me."

"When I went to the hospital afterwards, they said I was really dehydrated. I went to hospital on Thursday before the fight because I wasn't feeling very good. I was just sluggish and not feeling good, so I went to urgent care and got checked out. I thought I was going to be okay. We didn't do any blood work, but they gave me an IV because they said I was a little dehydrated then and when I went in there and fought I didn't have anything in me."

"Ever since I got into the fight game I've had people badmouthing me...and all that stuff got into my head. ...Now, after that fight was a real eye-opener. I didn't go in there at 100% and now everyone was like, 'This is what we wanted; we wanted to see him get beat.' So now, I really don't care. I'm going out there to fight and I'm not worried about any critics, any this or that, I'm not worried about any of that anymore."

I still think Lashley sucks, but...

Standing the fighters up when Lashley had the full mount was probably a HUGE disappointment and confidence killer, and in my opinion it cost Lashley the fight even if it didn’t kill his confidence.

Had that stand up never happened Lashley would have won IMO.

by Polyhedron on Sep 13, 2010 6:12 PM EDT reply actions

Nah.. there’s no way he would have survived the whole third round. It was a shitty stand-up, yes, but he still most probably would have lost that fight IMO. He was fucking spent already.. only difference is Griggs would’ve TKO’d him early round three instead of end of round two.

by Horselover Fat on Sep 13, 2010 6:17 PM EDT up reply actions

There is no way to know that. At all.

Could it have went down like that? Maybe, but we don’t get to know because of a terrible reffing mistake. It’s just as easy to say that Bobby, after getting a rest in between rounds, would have had enough to get on top of Griggs long enough to grind out a decision. Lashley got FUCKED over in that fight.

Lashley had to be carried out on a stretcher and brought to the hospital because of severe dehydration – this was after two rounds. I have a hard time seeing him come out with any kind of renewed power for the third, I question if he’d even be able to answer the bell. We’ll never know, but this is what I feel is most probable.

ive watched a decent amount of MMA since i was introduced to the sport in 2007

ive never seen someone less active with the mount, he was ignoring obvious subs (its not like these were exotic moves either, simple JJ manuvers were in front of him) and his pattern of punch to the body, punch to the head, lay down, repeat had me for the first (and only) time asking for a stand up from that dominant a position.

of course your allotted your own opinion, this was just mine.

It was a huge fuck-up

They paused the fight to check on Lashley’s cut, then failed to restart the fight in the same position. Standups out of mount do happen, but you can’t take someone’s position because the doctor wants to check their cut.

I always thought Bobby Flay was sort of the underrated Iron Chef. Unlike all the other Iron Chefs who had their own distinct style and niche, Flay didn’t at all. He was just a good all round chef who was picked pretty much all the time and always held his own

I quite like the sentiment of his closing lines.

I really can’t bring myself to rag on him, because I mean he’s just a person and he’s rowing up the river and sometimes maybe it’s best if us internet types don’t fling so much mud at him from the riverbank.

Chad Griggs is a full time firefighter who had only fought once in the last two and a half years.Yes Lashley should of beat him, that is whole reason they hand picked that opponent. Perhaps if they stopped turning down the Shane del Rosario fight that Strikeforce has been trying to put together ever since they first signed Lashley then maybe fans wouldn’t be so hard on him.

Most obviously this.

And I would in NO way put him in the same boat as Carwin. Well, maybe the same boat but a different compartment, like that ice-tray thing with the titanic that didn’t work and everyone was still effed. Carwin’s problem was conditioning no matter how you slice it, and though I thing he trained hard for the fight he didn’t condition in a way that really pushed his endurance the same way a fight would. Or at least a fight with two contestants that big and Carwin throwing that many punches.

Dehydration is no joke, and can seriously impact your performance. I don’t think Lashley ending up in the hospital on an I.V. after the fight was a work (oh hai luke). What I can’t wrap my head around is how he got dehydrated. He was well underweight, and didn’t have to cut at all. An athlete at his level, with the level of trainers he has around him, has NO EXCUSE not to keep him hydrated and know the consequences of dehydration. The only way this makes sense to me is if this is some weird hold-over from his military days. And all hydration is not the same, your body takes a while to fully restore/deplete itself, that’s why fighters can cut tons of water-weight for weigh-ins, but if Lashley was dehydrated for an extended time during training leading up to the fight it could have a serious effect.

Either way, both guys had a physical problem that they need to correct, not by talking about science but changing their habits inside the gym. Carwin has a tougher road to hoe getting right physically, but is solid in his skill set (not that you can’t always improve/fine tune). Lashley looked decent for a rookie fighter, but not like any world-beating prospect. If the dehydration really affected him physically, then fine, fix it and move on. But it wasn’t his only problems. He still has a long way to go with technique and didn’t look comfortable with the physical violence of the fight. He’ll have to figure out if he has a Brock-like aversion to getting punched, a lack of a mean-streak like out school Dan Severn, and if he’ll be able to overcome this on fight night.
