UFC 120 Preview: Carlos Condit Talks Dan Hardy

"I haven't got anything against him, he's a great fighter and he seems like a cool guy. But I wanted to fight him because he breaks down real nice for my game, and he's got status in the division. He was the No. 1 contender so it's a big fight for me. We'll see if I'm foolish on October 16. He's definitely the most dangerous opponent I've fought so far, and he's the toughest too. He's definitely one of the top guys I've faced for sure."

If Condit wins it's by a close, grinding decision.

But I think Hardy’s going to fuck him up on the feet. Carlos is way too comfortable with his lackluster stand-up for my liking.

I want Condit to win, but he is just so reckless on the ground and on the feet. I do wonder how Hardy will handle the pressure that Condit brings because Condit just keeps coming forward, many times to his detriment.

by chrisbboy82 on Sep 12, 2010 7:21 PM EDT up reply actions

I feel Condit would have broken Dan’s arm if he had that armbar Georges did and Hardy refused to tap.

Everyone is different though. GSP in his fight went for more arm locks like armbars and kimuras. The times that GSP tried to take the back, he did not do well, but he did not really go for any chokes. Other fighters like a Stun Gun or BJ Penn would have been able to take the back from the positions that GSP tried to. I have to wonder how the fight would have went if GSP went for more chokes.

by chrisbboy82 on Sep 12, 2010 9:54 PM EDT up reply actions

If I was an MMA fighter...

I’d prefer to use chokes simply because if your opponent refused to tap, you can end the fight without having to injury them in a lasting way.

I like Fedor, it’s just his fans that are intolerable...and his management.

by Razreshat on Sep 12, 2010 9:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Alright Caine.

Not really. I understand where you’re coming from. Personally, I believe that to be a complicated issue. On one hand, a man needs to tap. On the other, you hate to see them go out if they think they can work their way out of something. Tricky indeed.

by Brent Ducharme on Sep 13, 2010 2:10 AM EDT up reply actions

the problem with that line of thinking is the body has 4 limbs and only 1 neck.

Jiu jitsu is about taking what is given. Limbs are given more. But I agree, I will take a choke over a arm bar given a choice.

Oh, I agree...

but all things being equal, I’m more comfortable with the temporary incapacitation that comes with putting someone to sleep over breaking their arm or leg and at best putting them on the shelf for months, if not longer.

Have you ever broken a limb because someone didn’t tap?

by GetItOn on Sep 13, 2010 4:52 AM EDT up reply actions

i have hyper extended arms in tournaments

Well I assume they were. I saw elbows being rubbed on two occasions. I am sure they were fine in a week or two. Its part of the game.

Agreed

Condit is one my favorite fighters. The comeback in the MacDonald fight was a sight to behold.

by IWillPartyHard on Sep 12, 2010 5:52 PM EDT up reply actions

I thought that comeback was a pretty cool indication of Jackson’s coaching style. He really knows his fighters and coaches differently for who it was. With Georges against Alves he just kept him calm and kept him focus. “Georges listen to me, listen to me, hit him with your groin Georges.” But Condit is a fucking brawler, and Jackson treated him like that. He just got in his face and started yelling. Both fighters responded.

hlebtastic

Good catch on seeing how Jackson speaks to each individual differently in the cage. Everyone needs to get pumped in a different way. I knew this guy (that I actually hated) a long time ago that needed to listen to Michael Jackson before he got in a fight. The “trigger mechanisms” in our brain are so awesome!

Carlos is a fucking warrior. I haven’t ever seen a fight of his that wasn’t fight of the night material. And I really like this fight for him. I’m a fan of Hardy as well, but he promoted his way to the GSP fight. If Carlos can just start fast for once, I think he’s got this.

This should be a great fight.

Condit gets stronger as the fight goes on and is good at inflicting damage in the later rounds.

Condit was the first fighter I ever felt some kind of attachemnt to,

the first fighter I ever considered one of my favorites. Not sure if he can beat Hardy, but his chin is made of iron, he’s got the heart of a Nogueira, and he’s pretty well rounded. Plus, if he hadn’t lost the Kampmann fight (which I still believe was an amazing fight and should have been a draw), he’d be undefeated in the UFC right now.

I’ll be cheering for him.

by Shaun32887 on Sep 12, 2010 6:02 PM EDT reply actions

True say

The Condit/Kampmann fight remains one of my all-time favourites. Awesome back and forth battle, and one of the only legit draws I can think of off the top of my head. It’s great to see both fighters facing tough, high profile opponents now.

by Kibitz on Sep 12, 2010 7:12 PM EDT up reply actions

I like the Condit/Ellenberger fight. He was curled up in a fetal position getting punched in the face and all of a sudden he just pops up and starts nailing Ellenberger with knees. That was just about the coolest thing I’ve ever seen.

Not anymore,

John Morgan of Field Gulls gives Alex Smith some of the credit for the Seahawks’ victory. Morgan: “Alex Smith is wild, and as the points stacked up for Seattle, Smith reverted to the terrible, panicky, mistake-prone mess he has been for most of his career. With very, very few interruptions, Smith has been among the greatest, most persistent, and most cumulatively damaging busts in NFL history. Still, though it may not have been against great competition, and though it wasn’t dominating, no matter how Seattle ratcheted up the score through turnovers, it was a big victory, an assured victory, not lucky, not close; The Seahawks hosted the pre-season darling 49ers and beat them by 25.”

Yeah

the only other thing I can think of is that he seemed to rock Swick pretty bad.

by Shaun32887 on Sep 12, 2010 9:52 PM EDT up reply actions

He did ring Swick’s bell a few times, but considering what Mike revealed recently about his medical condition, and how terrible he felt going into that fight, the fact that he didn’t get knocked out is more surprising.

Maybe it’s in a print interview that he specifically mentions the weeks leading up to the Hardy fight. I couldn’t find it, but I remember him mentioning being really weak and physically depleted going into that fight. Anyway, the video contains the gist of his condition, initial misdiagnosis, etc.

Makes sense

I remember thinking that he looked terrible; Rogan guess that maybe it was from damage taken earlier on in the fight, but this is more believable

by Shaun32887 on Sep 13, 2010 2:04 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah. For two years there’s been all this speculation about Mike’s weight, how drawn he looks, etc. When he released the video it all made perfect sense. It just sucks that it was misdiagnosed for so long. I don’t mean to totally slag on Dan’s abilities, either. I’m a fan of his as well, and I think he’s a very solid fighter, top ten, but not quite at the top of the mountain. But I’m a big fan of Condit, and I’m pumped for this one. I think Carlos should take it.

This is the fucking truth. I like Dan as well, but the idea that he’s some one shot kill artist is ludicrous. Dan’s striking defense is the only aspect I give him an advantage in.

Also, keep in mind that the only guy Hardy has KOed in the UFC was fighting with one lung. He was diagnosed with a collapsed lung after the fight.

by Steve4192 on Sep 13, 2010 8:10 AM EDT up reply actions

This is truly either going to be Condit’s breakthrough to the big time or his descent out of the UFC. He’s been hot and cold for the past few fights and now it’s time for him to put it all together for one performance against Hardy. And after how he fought the last round i’m leaning towards him finally showing what the NBK is all about in the UFC.

I wasn’t sure about getting tickets to this one until I found out Condit was fighting and he was against Hardy. Dude puts on a fucking war every time he’s in the cage, period. It’s weird cause I normally root for Hardy, but in this case I’ll be behind Condit as even though he’d lose to GSP I’d pay good money to see him get a title shot.

by Newman24 on Sep 13, 2010 3:12 AM EDT reply actions

the thing about Condit

once he finds his groove he turns into a different fighter. I believe that he’s learned a lot about himself and his determination in each fight leading up to this one. So maybe Hardy has too but Condit has one of the sickest nicknames in MMA and he owns up to it every time he fights. He reminds me a lot of Chael Sonnen and it’s not because they both came from WEC. Both of these guys are really willing to lay it ALL on the line in the cage. There’s no quit in either one of them.
