UFC Fight Night 22 Preview: Efrain Escudero and Charles Oliveira Talk About Facing Each Other on Short Notice
Charles Oliveira talks to UFC.com:
"People asked me about overtraining from the Elkins preparation to this one, and I replied with, 'I had a reasonable time between fights,'" said the young lightweight. "The important thing was that God gave me the opportunity to fight again, and I have this gratitude to Him. I was already training moderately when the call was made; I've only added more continuity and focus."
...
"I don't have the pressure of my debut, because I already know what I'll face there, even through Escudero is completely different from Elkins. I think we're both in the same situation of fighting against a guy that we knew we would face with less than three weeks of training camp."
Efrain Escudero talked to the media at last week's conference call, via Dave Meltzer:
"I think it's a great fight," said Escudero. "I think it's going to be an excellent fight. I think he's, you know, it's his time to shine and all. He's coming off a good win and he's trying to move up the ladder. So for us to step into the octagon, I think it's going to be a real good fight."
...
"It was a month out, so I had enough time," he said. "It was all in a 48-hour window span (the change of opponents) where everything moved so quickly, and for me, we're worried about what we're bringing to the table. We're not worried on what they're going to bring to the table. We're making them fight our fight, and we're going to go out there and do our job."
Meltzer also discusses some of the hype behind the undefeated Oliveira:
Thus far, Oliveira on paper looks like the lightweight version of someone like Jon Jones. He started fighting only two-and-a-half years ago, and is listed as having a 13-0 record. But all but two of his fights have been in Brazil, where record keeping isn't perfect.
...
But walking into UFC and wowing everyone in your debut is hardly a guarantee of long-term success. You can look no farther than Todd Duffee, who set the fastest knockout record in his debut, or Houston Alexander, who destroyed ranked fighter Keith Jardine, as people who shocked the UFC fan base on their first times in the Octagon. But neither lasted in the organization.

The Bears need to get a player other than Urlacher and Briggs,
because they are carrying the team right now. They might want to consider, you know, having an offense? Maybe being able to score when you have 1st and goal on the one fucking yard line?
I find it interesting that Meltzer talks about guys who are power punchers wowing the audience in their debuts when we know power != technique. Oliviera had an absolutely beautiful, technical transition on the ground and chained submissions like nobodies business. Very different. If he wanted to be the turd in the punchbowl, he could have at least brought up Mackens Semerzier’s win over Fabiano.
"Someone is WRONG on the internet. What do you want me to do? LEAVE? Then they'll keep being wrong!"
-Randall Munroe
Holy shit Urlacher is still playing? Sorry MMA has taken over all sports for me.

Very good fight
I’m pretty sure that Escudero will try to make this exciting but be forced to fall back on his wrestling.
This is a great fight to see where Charles is at in terms of his cardio and such.
This is a great fight night! I’m veery excited for it :)
I apologize for my never-ending assault on the English Language. I feel like Qui the promoter from Jade Empire...
Escudero hasn’t utilized his wrestling in a while, and I have to wonder if he will use it on Oliveira considering Oliveira’s ground skills. Escudero is good on the ground as well, but I wonder if him and his team want to keep the fight on the feet.
Escudero hasn’t fought anyone on the ground with long limbs and good jiu jitsu Oliveira. I think Escudero’s is going to try to keep this fight standing.
Actually, Evan Dunham fits the bill as far as someone with long limbs and good jiu jitsu who Escudero fought and lost to by an armbar. Cole Miller also fits that bill as well, and Escudero kept the fight standing and KOed Miller. With Oliveira’s ground skills, I think that Escudero would be well served to keep the fight standing.
"The important thing was that God gave me the opportunity..."
I’m thinking I’m already a fan : )
