UFC 119 Preview: Frank Mir Talks Mirko Cro Cop - "I'll Submit Him in the First Round"

UFC Heavyweight FRANK MIR sits down with RawVegas.tv to talk about the vacation time he's taken rather than train too hard for his UFC 119 bout against Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic since "Cro Cop" has suggested he will not be coming into this fight at 100 percent; Mir wants to keep things fair.

Mir always seems a good guy, always really courteous and polite with the interviewer.

This was a great interview.

Not that I condone facism or any ism for that matter. Isms are in my opinion, not good. A person shouldn't believe in an ism, he should believe in himself.

I quote John Lennon, "I don't believe in Beatles, I just believe in me". Good point there, after all he was the walrus. I could be the walrus. Wouldn't change the fact I have to bum rides off of people.

Oh Frank Mir

You every analyze everything, even yourself. No one cares about how you train all you have to do is punch you in the face, Pedepano knows that, Vera knows that, and Carwin knows that.

That was a solid interview

I like the conversational Mir much more than I like the “I’m a philosopher” Mir.

I agree

I normally find Mir one of the most unlikeable personalities in the sport but he comes across really well here. Perhaps I just found the way he presented himself off putting.

Looking forward to this fight – even though it doesn’t rank very high in terms of relevance I think it will be entertaining as such.

As a Crocop fan, Sept 25th will be a sad day for me, I’m already planning my eulogy, which I plan to host on this forum. I would appreciate it if people would like to share their Crocop memories here after UFC 119; good or bad, but please be respectful. Frank Mir fans aren’t welcome, their senseless gloating will not be tolerated.

This proves that Dan Quinn is the best guy to lose to Frank Mir.

Take that Lesnar.

1. That’s a dumb comment.
2. Your reply doesn’t make sense. It was a joke.

When a fighter bats .500 after the 2 minute mark

then yeah, you can consider that a weakness in their game.

For a fighter, batting .500 after 2 minutes is really good.

its not even their sport and there’s no time limit in baseball. :P

Hmmm......

Lesnar taps Mir’s butt weakly. Mazzagatti isn’t sure if he is tapping out. Lesnar then bitches about how Mazzagatti is a terrible ref who should never officiate another one of his fights.

Mir is knocked unconscious by Carwin. Carwin gets in several extra shots slamming Mir’s head into the canvas. Mir appreciates how Miragliotta does not immediately stop the fight.

I don't mind it being taken either way

But with the heat that Mir tends to take in the comments section, I wanted to bring attention to it for him.

I hope Frank Mir isn't lying

I hope he isn’t training as much as he should. I hope he is taking Cro Cop lightly. I hope he is assuming Cro Cop won’t be at his best.

Cro Cop already had a solid chance before…but Frank Mire openly stating he’s slacking off in training makes this a Croatian Horse of a different color. The odds only slide more and more in Cro Cop’s favor.

But there is the outside chance that Frank Mir is only CLAIMING to not be at 100%, so that win or lose he has something to fall back on…but secretly he may be training his ass off.

I hope he is telling the truth in saying that he isn’t training a lot…and I hope it costs him his consciousness on Sept 25th.

how I took it

To me it sounded like Mir was being sarcastic about his vacation time, a dig towards Mirko preparing fans for the fact he won’t be a hundred percent. Mir has to know a very good showing, a dominant win, will do a lot to get him back on the road toward title contention. However, a loss would move him closer to gatekeeper status.

I think Mir, for all of his talk, has rededicated himself since the Vera loss. Although the extra mass experiment failed for him, it at least shows his willingness to push himself in a new direction, especially since, by his own admission, he hates lifting weights. I think less mass building and more training technique will bode well for him, at least against Cro Cop

I want CroCop to win, but honestly, CroCop has not been able to beat heavyweights in the UFC that are at a certain level. CroCop in the UFC lost to Gonzaga, Kongo, and Dos Santos, and I feel that Mir is definitely better than Kongo seeing that Mir beat him, and Mir in my opinion is below Dos Santos and maybe equal if not better than Gonzaga based on strength of record. I don’t think size will be too much of a factor, and mentally, Mir can be hit or miss while CroCop has shown resilience against Barry and took a beating from Dos Santos. Stylistically, if Mir can get this to the ground, he will definitely have the advantage, and the standup is a dangerous place for Mir to be even though CroCop has gotten older.

by chrisbboy82 on Sep 12, 2010 7:34 PM EDT reply actions

I hope Cro Cop drops him, then finishes with a choke. Just to make Mir cry in his sleep, forever haunted by his demons.

Mir has survived nearly being killed and spending life as a cripple him losing to CC isn’t even on the radar of things that will haunt him.

Anyways, i’m hoping that Mir is taking shit seriously and shows up focused CC has been living on borrowed time and has been let off the hook enough already. Mir needs to come out and make yet another statement about where he is in the HW and CC is the perfect guy to get a rep from beating.

Mir should be able to sub CroCop but we will have to wait and see.

by KGW on Sep 13, 2010 12:27 AM EDT reply actions

Doesn't matter how hard Mir trains

His chin is his problem. You can’t really train your ability to take a punch. We saw that with Liddell against Franklin, all the training became irrelevant once Chuck’s chin was tapped. Same goes for Frank, his opponent always has a puncher’s , or in this case a kicker’s, chance.

by WARistotle on Sep 13, 2010 2:17 AM EDT reply actions

I can't figure out why more people don't like Mir

The only thing I can think of is that he speaks with a bit of a condescending tone, as if everything he says is quite obvious.

This is unfortunate because while he is obviously very self-confident, he gives well thought out responses that seem to be truthful.

I have always liked this because it seems like he wants to give the fans credit for being intelligent and able to think for themselves. Why more people aren’t into this guy and less into the fighters using the tired pro wrestling schtick has been endlessly disappointing for me.
