UFC 119 Preview: Mirko Cro Cop Talks Frank Mir and Heavyweight Title Run

Photo

"Spent so many years fighting and I'm a PRIDE heavyweight champion. I made many big victories but to take the UFC Heavyweight belt would definitely be the top of my career."

"I believe (Frank Mir) will try to take me down. At least in his mind maybe he thinks he will have an advantage on the ground, but we will see."

"He has an American attitude and approaches the fight with a big mouth and big statements. I think he better keep his mouth shut."

"He should pray to god not to be knocked out. You shouldn't underestimate me at all. I'm going to be ready."

I’ll be praying or the exact opposite.

Damn you Cro Cop

I want to believe in you, but I don’t think I can handle being let down anymore.

Seems to me you better pray that Mir doesn’t rip off your leg and hand it to you on your way to retirement.

i would love to see that too

but, the more kicks he throws the more vulnerable he is to get taken down.
Not much would make me happier than seeing crocop kick him into oblivion tho :)

How many times has Frank Mir submitted a guy after 2 minutes of the fight?

Yeah. And who has submitted Cro Cop? Prime Nog and nobody else.

Lets not forget who Frank Mir is. I got Cro Cop by TKO late in the second.

he submitted to strikes in the jds fight as well. not that it matters, I am counting on him to kill mir in under 3 minutes.

You act as if what happened to Kongo couldn’t happen to Mirko as well. I love Cro Cop, but he’s not making it very far in this fight.

Kongo wasn't rocked at all in that fight,

it was clearly a slip. Cup Cheick was totally lucid and even threw a leg kick off his back as soon as he landed.

Frank Mir has bad takedowns, a bad gas tank, poor positional grappling, mediocre boxing, and a lack of urgency. He beat Zombie Nog and 1-0 pro wrestler… questionably. Cro Cop has all the talent for near elite takedown defense and very strong defensive grappling. I see Mir trying to muscle him around and eating left hands for it in a dull first round, missing on his takedowns, then getting stalked and fucked up throughout the second. This probably won’t be a pretty fight, but Mirko is a VERY live dog.

Good insight

I didn’t know that about the Kongo fight. I think you’re right about the way the fight will go.

Yeah. i suppose mir rose to the top of the division by being terrible at everything. CC’s gonna knock him out cold, seeing how impressive he’s been lately.

You think it’s questionable that Lesnar tapped out due to a knee bar?

Sadly, I think your pants are safe

CroCrop won’t be able to push Mir around like Brock and Shane, and is going to end up getting subbed I think.

Tatum: I think he's a good man. I like him. I got nothing against him, but I'm definitely gonna make orphans of his children.

Takedowns are definitely a big threat for Mirko

but I think that Frank Mir is still certain that he’s a high level striker. His knockout of Cheick Kongo and TKO of Minotauro emboldened him into thinking he’s K-1 material, something his loses to Lesnar and Carwin haven’t convinced him of otherwise yet.

Blah blah blah Frank Mir isn’t going to shoot in for any takedowns. Not until Mirko starts lighting him up pretty bad. I think Mirko still has enough gas in the tank to put Frank Mir down.

by troy_doney on Sep 11, 2010 7:02 PM EDT reply actions

You mean his knockdown? It amazes me to this day how many people think Mir ko’d Kongo. He knocked him down and then sub’d him.

Big thing about Mir is that he’s incredibly cocky. He’s always sure that one element that he’s working on is enough to win the fight. For the Carwin fight, it was his size. For the Lesnar fight, it was his stand up. This time, he says he’s working on his wrestling.

Well, it’s pretty simple. If Cro Cop stuffs the takedown, Frank’s questionable chin will probably meet a straight left from Cro Cop, and he’ll have two losses in a row. However, if Frank wins, where is he going to go? When he fought Shane and Lesnar, he got outclassed and destroyed. He’s pretty much stuck when it comes to his place in the HW division.

by MicahC on Sep 11, 2010 8:38 PM EDT reply actions

He’s not stuck anywhere, Frank wins and he goes right back into contention he was hardly outclassed by either guy. Frank is his biggest enemy just look at the Carwin fight, he showed up like he couldn’t be bothered to even be there and paid the price for it. When he is motivated and hungry he is as good a HW as there is in mma hopefully that’s the guy well see finaly retire CC.

I’m not sold on him being a top heavyweight at all, Frank talked his way into contention. He beat Brock the first fight because of a bull shit stand up, he knocked out a fading Nog who had staph and caught Kongo with a punch early on where Frank barely showed any skill. I’m not saying theres no chance Frank will win but theres also a good chance Cro Cop would too.

LOL @ finding excuses for every Mir win...

you forgot the “His cup helped him beat Sylvia” line…

"In this fight, Anderson showed he was human," Nogueira said. "He showed he could be weak. But he showed he is a fighter and he brings something from his heart. It was beautiful."

by Broke Lesnar on Sep 12, 2010 11:38 AM EDT up reply actions

More often than ANY other fighter

Frank Mir defenders say he was ‘just inmotivated’ whenever he loses…things like ‘when he shows up to win, he destroys people’

It’s such an unqauntifiable aspect, any guy who loses you could say ‘oh he looked unmotivated you could tell’…what the hell ever!

But even accepting the whole ‘he wasn’t motivated’ thing as a legitimate argument, then Frank Mir simply has another bad flaw, his motivation…if he brings any lack of motivation against a Cro Cop who is always eager to prove that he isn’t done, then he’s going to end up in smashville, eating straight lefts and a variety of leg, body and head kicks.

Frank Mir

Apparently he couldn’t get motivated to face an 11-0 Shane Carwin for an interim title to secure an opportunity to get a rematch he was obsessed with getting…

What reason do we have to believe he’s going to get motivated for a Mirko Cro Cop that EVERYONE seems to be writing off. Frank Mir seems to have trouble taking guys seriously even when most recognize them as legit threats…how is he going to treat a guy who has been written off and is taking the fight on short notice?

I think people write cro cop off becuase they havent seen the cro cop of old. The transition to the cage from ring has hindered him.

I am really hoping so bad that Mirko can pull this fight out. But when I look at this fight in depth I can see this fight going eather way and bolth fighters winning in a whole host of different ways. And thats becasue bolth fighters really have glaring flaws and Holes.

Mirko – looking very slow and old the last few years and just seeming to have lost all motivation he ounce had to fight. Also Mirkos speed, his hands and footwork have really seemed to slow and start to fade. Its amazing how eather age or wear and tare from years of fighting or a combination of bolth have caught up with Mirko. He looks like a shell of the fighter who just stormed threw the pride OWGP and was thought to be lock to be the UFC’s HW champison for years to come when signing with Zuffa. We all know how that went after the Eddie Sanchez fight.

Frank- His #1 enemy the man can’t take damage and just crumbles after the first BIG shot, Call it no heart or what ever you will but ounce the fight starts going a little bad for Frank or ounce the first BIG shot hits thats usally about it. Its likely in about 20 to 30 seconcds Frank will be laying in the fetal position getting pounded on. Franks Horrible Wrestling also could play a BIG factor hear. For someone who has such good Slick Subs for a HW you would think he would atleast be better at getting the fight to the ground.

Thats why I really can’t lean one way or ther other on this fight and its such a pickem coin toss. I see way to many ways bolth can win or loose and I see huge holes in bolth fighters. I think the fighter who wins this fight is the one who has the least weakness in the areas I said above that night.

He's been KO'ed by Power punchers.

It’s not like he’s getting put out by pitter patter shots.
How come no one is questioning Mirkos heart after this?

Mir will have a hard time taking Crocop down, his TDD is (was?) excellent, or at least, good enough for a guy like Mir.

Not hating on Crocop

but he wasn’t ‘Pride Heavyweight Champ.’ He was Pride Open-Weight champ, in a tournament where he fought three people who didn’t normally fight at that weight (Silva, Yoshida, Minowa) and Josh Barnett.

by CaptainArmbar on Sep 12, 2010 1:42 PM EDT reply actions

And he beat Barnett by eye-poke.

Erm...

he beat Barnett thrice. Someone who until the breakdown of Affliction was regarded at the #2 HW in the world.
