Quote of the Day: Rashad Evans Aims to Knock Mauricio "Shogun" Rua Out

"I would rather have been able to stay active and fight (Mauricio "Shogun" Rua) pretty close after my last fight but with him having the knee surgery it’s gonna be pretty much out of the question. Then it becomes about, should I wait to fight for the belt or should I fight just to fight? ... My motivation to fight is to be the best and to be the champion."

"I think I just have to go right at him. I think I can’t try to move around too much or try to get away from him because he will find me, because he is a very aggressive striker. So, I can be aggressive too."

"I think there’s a possibility for me to knock him out, I mean that is what I hope to do. That’ll be great to knock him out. That would be my aim to try to knock him out, but you know if I catch him or something it would probably be off his aggression. I’ll see if I can capitalize on him coming in."

"Styles make fights and having so much time off I don’t really know the kind of Rua I’m going to go against when I meet him and he doesn’t know who he’s going to go against. So, what the perceived advantages of me right now are, are not necessarily what they are going to be when I meet him in May."

I was going to come in here and say the same thing. You know that Rashad is going to go with the Greg Jackson plan….quick combo and shoot the double leg…..rinse, wash, repeat. The less he has to stand with Shogun, the better…..that will be the plan. Shogun’s wrestling is known as somewhat weak, so there will be no problem getting him on his back. He’ll just have to be careful on the ground as Shogun has ability to reverse and transitions well on the ground.

Having said that……I wish he would go in with the plan of trying to knock him out. Would make for an interesting fight.

Interesting, no, entertaining, yes!

Shogun’s Muay Thai is far superior to Rashad’s striking. Shogun is a knockout artist on his feet.

I actually want Rashad to try and “Greg Jackson him”, that way the fight will be closer, and we will see who is the better fighter.

by Magaca on Sep 11, 2010 10:53 AM EDT up reply actions

I hope Rashad goes all “Greg Jackson” on him too, so people will stop saying he never faced a good wrestler.

Yeah, and that was with a fucked up knee too.

I loved watching Chuck trying to get away from Shogun’s guard. Obviously he likes to be standing anyways, but there was an “Oh fuck this” sense of urgency. He wanted nothing to do with Shogun on the ground.

As much as the Rua bros like to strike, they will always be ground magicians at heart.

Personally getting a little tired of the Greg Jackson MO. Not sure it really shows who is the better fighter., just shows who is better at playing the sport as currently judged in the states.

it's still a fight

people got to fight in the style their good at and in what makes most sense. I know we all have preferences in the styles we most like, but wrestling is a style as well. a guy like Rashad can’t just go in there trying to make a ‘fight’ with Rampage or T. Silva because he will most likely lose if he decides to trade with them, but taking them down and making them fight his style makes more sense for him to come out with the W.

Did you know Greg Jackson was the one who devised Rashad's strategy against Machida?

And that Evans was a bit upset with Jackson’s non-wrestling strategy for that fight?

by Mint on Sep 11, 2010 12:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Are you sure about that?

Seems like a very un-Jackson approach to me, wanting to stand with a quicker and better striker.

At that point, Rashad had not used his wrestling offensively recently.

Then again, unlike with Shogun, Rashad is unlikely to get Machida and his elite, if unorthadox, TDD down…

To be fair, I blame Jackson a lot.

He hasn’t been able to get Rashad to correct his footwork or teach him basic boxing fundamentals. Same with Jardine, he told him to embrace the funkiness and never taught him what a left hook looks like. I know it’s a bit of a joke now, but he just walks straight into that shit. How about Leonard Garcia’s stubborn refusal to do anything but wing right hands? Shane Carwin’s continued poor striking technique and reliance on power?

I think there are a few guys who absolutely are a great fit for long term stays at Jacksons. Guys who are wrong between the ears. Melvin Guillard, Diego Sanchez, and Jon Jones for the next year or two. But he’s far from a godlike technical coach. Firas is easily the strong point of the Grudge/Jacksons/Tristar network.

Jackson is not a good coach. There. I said it.

Jackson puts fighters’ minds at ease. Let’s be real, who has he coached and improved? Maybe Nate. Jardine never improved, he got WORSE. Rashad all the pieces were there already, he just needed cage time. And like you said, the couple holes in his game haven’t been improved.

That 2nd paragraph is money. Except for Jones. I don’t see Jackson as good for him. He’s gonna curtail that ferocity that he needs.

He's a great coach for building confidence and mental game.

Jones needs that while he’s still young. There have been flashes of frustration and his mind letting him down. He got pissed about Vera’s relatively tame trash talk, and he threw blatant illegal strikes when a ref wasn’t stopping a fight quick enough for him. He’s gotta get his head on straight, and I think Jackson’s will be food for that. But he has GOT to move on after about two years, or else his “funkiness and creativity” will become “technically deficient”. I’ve said that over and over, totally believe it.

Jones with good technical boxing would be terrifying. Teach that kid a good jab and he’ll be able to completely dominate range and control an entire fight. But Jacksons isn’t the place for that.

Sherdog- “Is it your intention to stand and trade with Rampage?”

RE: “Fuck no. That man could knock me out. I’m gonna play grab leg and push him up the cage and point out a decision. There’s way to much money in this sport for me to risk getting Bispinged. You know how much my suits cost? Nah, man. Nice and safe. You don’t go in the deep end of the pool if you can’t swim. I’m all about the shallow end. And the paycheck, lets not forget the paycheck.”

And the wrestling haters are out again today...

Don’t want to get taken down? LEARN TO DEFEND AGAINST IT.

Because wrestling is sooooo much more boring than some guy lying on his back, trying to grab another guy’s wrist or ankle. Yup, that’s just loads of excitement there.

Oh, I know, let me watch two guys who couldn’t properly throw a punch if their lives depended on it stand and trade and then gas out after 3 minutes! Woo hoo, we’re partying now!

Now, see how ridiculous it looks when you attack one combat strategy as being inferior? That’s what you just did to wrestling.

Wrestling done well helps fighters win fights. It doesn’t make them scared or inferior. Don’t hate what you don’t understand.

Yo Duck its not about wrestling hate .....

……. its about someone not even making an attempt to finish a fight . Rashad is the definition of lay & pray / wall & stall . All he wants to do is waste time so he doesn’t actually have to fight . Not once in two strait fights did Rashad ever look to finish . Instead he prefered to just lay on his opponet and wait out a decision while doing zero damage . I’m all for wrestling …….when its used properly . By properly I mean used to set up GnP or a submission not just hold another fighter down .

Did eveyone forget how that fight started?

Rashad came in and rocked Rampage.

If you watch the fight with an unbiased eye, Rampage is responsible for a lot of the stalling. Against the fence, Rashad was firing shots at Rampage’s head until Rampage secured a tight overhook and just waited for the ref to separate them. No attempt at pushing Rashad away, rotating and reversing against the cage, etc. Then on the ground you see Rampage doing nothing but either tightly hugging Rashad or squeezing his arms.

I understand the hate Rashad got for the Silva fight

He should have done a lot more GnP there.

But hating on him for the Rampage fight is just dumb. Rashad was the aggressor the whole fight. Rampage was all defense until Rashad half-KO’d himself, and even with that golden opportunity Rampage mostly hit air.

It takes two to make a good fight. Rashad came out swinging and after that wanted to grind him into a pulp. That’s all we can ask from him.

I am an unapologetic fan of Rashad.

He’s blowing smoke. He’s not going to stand with Shogun. He’s got his best chance for the belt in grinding out a decision from top position vs. Shogun, coming off injury. The only thing that might get in the way would be an interim belt fight, which apparently isn’t going to happen, despite nearly a year passing before Shogun will defend his belt.

what's wrong with interim belts?

I don’t get it. I LIKE interim belts. they’re cool. it lets you have title fights while guys are injured and then you get to have unification fights, which are sweet.

Have rashad fight the winner of little nog vs. bader or jones for the interim belt. if he whines, tell him that would be your first defence anyway. the LHW belt can’t just sit around till May … i mean come on.

by Clifford J on Sep 11, 2010 12:19 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree, but Rashad knows he'd need to fight Shogun eventually to unify it, so why rush into an opportunity to fall out of the #2 seed?

If it were really gonna happen, Dana would’ve announced an interim belt right after Shogun went under the knife.

FWIW I agree with your sentiment. I don’t think interim belts are bad at all, quite the opposite, but I see how Rashad isn’t gunning for it too.

The thing about having to fight one of them afterwards

Financially, it’s better for Rashad to become the champion and then lose it to Jones/Nog/Bader than it is to just lose to Jones/Nog/Bader in an iterim fight. We’re talking potentially millions in difference (Sponsors, Probably new contract, probably PPV cut, behind the scenes bonuses etc.)

by Magaca on Sep 11, 2010 2:19 PM EDT up reply actions

There's nothing really wrong with them.....

….but the thing is that Rashad would probably have to fight Machida or Rampage, and that’s a risk he doesn’t want to take. One knocked him out already, and the other almost knocked him out after coming off of a massive weight cut/ring rust.

Rashad could grind out a decision on Shogun, but then all that’s waiting for him is a pissed off Rampage, and a pissed off Machida. Neither are good things.

by MicahC on Sep 11, 2010 3:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Rampage, pissed off or not, does not have the skillset to overcome Rashad with the gameplan he used before.

Machida on the other hand beats Rashad 9/10 or more.

You have to take Rampage’s ring rust and weight cut into account there. You could tell the guy was rusty, not to mention he had the wrong gameplan. All he wanted to do was knock Rashad’s head off standing, and in doing so he just didn’t counter wrestle.

If you think about it, if there’s anyone who would put themselves in a position for a Rampage slam, it’s Rashad.

by Enmascarado on Sep 11, 2010 9:30 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm not denying hes a good fighter ....

…. nor am I saying Thiago is a top 5 guy ( top 10 maybe ) . What I am saying is Rashad is overrated , in my opinion . I’ve since come down off my retardation high I’ll freely admit that Rashad is a good fighter . My biggest issue with Rashad are quotes like this article . Hes gonna KO Shogun . Yea right hes gonna go in and turn a fight into a wrestling match . Which leads into my other issue , he is the poster boy for lay & pray / wall and stall . I’ll be honest if he’d have GnP’d or attempted to do some damage aginest Page or Silva I’d be fine with all his wrestling because it would have turned into an attempt to finish . Hes far too happy to just lay on guys and not improve his position and just grind out a decision . All I would have liked to have seen was him do damage & improve his position . Is that too much to ask from a supposed top level fighter thats fightin a guy comin off a year long lay off ? I don’t think so . And yes while its true I’d don’t like Rashad I can see he has talent .

Rampage is still a top 5 type fighter too me that just needs to either fight or act but not both . If he focuses on fighting he could make another run , if not he’ll be a fringe top 10 fighter . Silva has the talent to be a top fighter & has only been beaten by Machida & Rashad .

I don't see him as the third ...

… best to be honest . Shogun is the champ and is number one without a doubt . The next few are a jumble . Second , to me , is Lyoto Machida . Third would be Rampage ( and I know I’m gonna get some heat for it so let me explain ) . Page is next as long as hes a fighter and not an actor . If he goes all in as a fighter he’ll be the champ again . If he doesn’t he’ll struggle to be a top ten guy . Fourth is Rich Franklin . A former champ is hard to deny . And finally I’d place Rashad in the final top 5 spot . So yes to me hes overrated to you hes about right . And honestly if Lil Nog can bounce back he could bump Rashad out of the top five as could Bones Jones or Ryan Bader with some impressive performances .

To me Rashad has got a few bunnies for fights . He got Chuck on the decline ( but still KO’d him my only question is how much weight does that victory bear ? ) , he took a has been Tito to a draw ( and could have lost that fight if not for a questionable point deduction ) , he beat Mike Bisbing by an OK split decision ( I personally it was a draw but oh well ) , he beat Forrest to obtain the belt , got KO’d nasty like by Machida , decided to lay on Thiago for 3 rounds ( and almost lost in the third when he tried to trade ) and decided to yet again lay on Rampage for a victory ( and yet again almost lost in the third ; and Rampage was comin off a year long lay off and no matter if you like it or not ring rust was an issue ) . So you look at the names alone yes Rashads record looks impressive , but you look closer to see how he won and the timing of certain fights and its very unimpressive . Now if he would have finished off either Silva or Rampage with some GnP or a submission hes a no question top two or three fighter . To me all he did with this lay & pray shit is hurt his status . He got to mix it up some and not be so one dimensional with his wrestling . Hes gotten as bad as Rampage with his stand up . Page needs to get back to his roots and wrestle more and Rashad needs to improve his boxing and footwork and work on his BJJ & GnP . Being one dimensional either way is bad .

A chance yes.

But I agree that the only way I see Rashad winning is if Shogun is not 100%. Rashad’s gas tank is what i think is going to be the deciding factor. In his last two fights he has gassed and got caught in the third round, and Shogun will take him into deep water and get a hard fought KO or TKO.

I know he is just trying to hype the fight.

But I don’t think I could see anyone in the LHW division knocking Shogun out. We have seen this man horribly gassed, taking huge shots, and he still has never even been rocked in his career. Shogun has one of the best chins in the sport.

I am praying to my demon effigy for a brutal KO by Shogun, but I see Rashad taking a decision on takedowns just like with T. Silva.

by Polyhedron on Sep 11, 2010 1:18 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

Maybe in a 3-rounders...

Rashad’s biggest hole in his MMA wrestling game is his top control, and Rua, although he has rarely shown any in MMA, Shogun is a very high level BJJ player with excellent sweeps (although poor TDD) and a great gas tank.

Rashad won’t dominate Rua like Sonnen did Silva, but it may appear one-sided in the early rounds.

Once Rashad starts to gas, Rua finds a way to either submit him (somewhat unlikely) or catch him on the feet (more likely).

An elite MMA wrestler is what’s needed to beat Rua, but Rashad is not good enough to do it if Rua is healthy…

Maybe Shogun will risk leg and body kicks in the early rounds. He’ll probably get taken down off of them, but if he can get up again and repeat the process, it should make it easier to stuff Rashad’s shots in the later rounds, making it easier for Shogun to get his KO

Rua should out-class this foe without problems. Rua is smooth where evans is jerky in his KO attempts.

because it seems to me like a lot of people find wrestling boring or the ground game in general. I don’t know why K-1 isn’t more popular than it is already.

by AHutch on Sep 11, 2010 4:12 PM EDT reply actions   1 recs

It’s insane really that K-1 isn’t more popular in the US. I was a K-1 fan long before I came in to MMA, and it’s always been strange to me that not more MMA fans follow K-1, as pretty much everyone seems to appreciate fast-paced, technical striking wars. I hope FEG manages to turn things around and gain some positive momentum, K-1 and MMA can co-exist in sweet symbiosis.

But his win against Chuck was against a near dead Chuck. He drew with Tito when Tito was dead. Rashad was a bad match up for Forrest. His Rampage and Silva wins were impressive, but they were so boring I have a hard time giving him much props. I agree he deserves to be the number two ranking, but I’m not a fan.

Hit by heavyweights. When you’re gassed, your chin goes. He was gassed against Silva. Rampage, he ran into Rampage’s knee on a TD and then Rampage caught a stunned Rashad. Machida hit him with 15 shots before he went out.

You have to love that revisionist history

Then Chuck had just had a marginal loss against a rising fighter in Keith Jardine and an epic win against Wanderlei Silva. Rashad was considered a gimme for Chuck since Chuck ate one-dimensional wrestlers for lunch and this would set up Liddell for another run at the belt.

Now Rashad knocked out Chuck Liddell, the bum that was only a shell of himself after Rampage had knocked him out and who Rashad was lucky to catch and he never would have won against a prime Chuck so it doesn’t count.

Man, the fact that people are basically willing to completely write off excellent fighters that they like (Chuck, Forrest, Rampage) just to denigrate Rashad says a lot about what kind of fans they are and how much they really hate Rashad Evans.

Nothing boring about taking what Rashad did in those fights he made both guys look silly and exposed their shitty takedown defense.

People can keep praying and hoping against hope but it’s futile Rashad has gotten over his boxeritis and is going to take down Shogun and pound him out. It’s no wonder so many people are bitching about him because they know Rua is going to get worked thanks to his crappy tdd and overaggressive style.

I’ll personally enjoy him winning because this rash of bitching and crying about wrestling has become incredibly tired. So having another wrestler win a belt should really make it extra special to see how butthurt some people on here will get.
