UFC 119 Preview: Antonio Rogerio Nogueira Guarantees to Give Ryan Bader His First Career Loss

"I guarantee that I'm going to give (Ryan Bader) his first loss of his career."
"It would be very gratifying for me to show my fans a great show and knock out Bader the same way I knocked out Luis Cane."
"Bader is a new guy, he wants to establish himself in the rankings. I'm an older guy. With more experience and my experience will work in my favor, and help me beat Bader in this fight."
"He definitely has a lot more experience in wrestling that I do. But I think what I'm missing in my wrestling game he is missing in his jiu-jitsu game on the ground. So I think if he takes the fight to the ground he is going to get caught. So it's probably wiser for him to keep the fight standing up."

I wonder how many people read this and think Big Nog dropped down to LHW?

BElite!
How many times till we all get that down?!!1
To save me some time on 25% of all threads, here's the universal answer to the Fedor-debate: Fedor is the most accomplished MMA fighter ever. That is a fact. If he still is the best fighter at this point in time is up for debate.
I don't think it'll be that many
My first thought is that Ryan Bader is not Luis Cane. Second, I think Nogueira can win the fight if he acknowledges that Bader is a smart fighter, then draws up a game plan to throw Bader off his game. He needs to make Bader think and keep him off balance. I sure hope he’s not underestimating him.
not really looking forward to 119
lil nog isn’t that exciting to watch past the 2nd cause he gassed and mir/cro cop isn’t even close to what we had with big nog / mir (mur)

“So it’s probably wiser for him to keep the fight standing up.”…………………………….which means its probably wiser for Bader to dump him on his ass repeatedly.
No respect for Nog’s jitz? I’m interested to see how this plays out on the ground.
@rask4p on Twitter
Certainly have respect for his jitz, just think an inferior wrestler in Brilz almost managed to win a fight ( and many think he did ) by dumping Nog on his back a lot. Nog has to know that Bader’s wrestling is even better and he could turn it into that kind of fight if he wanted to.
Maybe Nog doesn’t want to and would rather see a standup game, where his more technical southpaw boxing could have an advantage against Bader’s standup, which probably only has a power advantage.
by Snake_Pliskan on Sep 10, 2010 1:11 PM EDT up reply actions
His wrestling is better, but how does he see his sub defense? If he’s concerned about being subed from guard or swept then maybe he doesn’t pull the trigger on the takedowns as often. If Nog starts throwing sub attempts like crazy in the first Bader would likely become a little gun shy in the 2nd and 3rd.

i see bader getting killed here
im not huge on him, hes a good fighter but he’ll never be a top 5 lhw or compete for a belt, people are highly overrating him
We have a saying back home that if your coming on, COME ON!!!!
I think you might be a little off there
He may not win this (I think he will) but he will definitely be top 5 one day

bader hasnt beaten anyone whos still in the ufc
and hes really never impressed me, hes been spoonfed opponents so far and while he is a good fighter, i simply think hes not elite and will not be able to beat a hungry motivated lil nog whos coming off a loss (brilz beat him we all know that)
We have a saying back home that if your coming on, COME ON!!!!
I like Bader in this match up, he's real strong form the top and while he's not the most proficient boxer he doesn't leave himself to open
Also the packs a fucking punch. I think he gets Nog I like a UD for Bader.

dude, give the guy a break. it’s only his 5th UFC fight, of course he’s not elite…yet. he’s looked pretty solid thus far and this is a great test for him. I don’t see Nog having his way w/Bader, especially if Bader takes him to the ground.
He's an explosive athlete
especially for a white guy

I can't wait for him to get repeatedly sacked, fumble because he throwing motion is slow
Throw the ball at the feet of open receivers, etc.
Seriously though, Quinn shouldn’t be backing up Orton…or be in the NFL.

Great college player
There is no way (despite the media trying to convince me) he will be successful in the NFL. Just…no. Great stats in college does not equate to successful NFL career.
Plus, I really really hate the Broncos but thank them for an epic collapse so we could get Earl Thomas.

agreed that great stats do not equate to a successful NFL career, but he is far from a one dimensional QB (see Tim Couch, Danny Wuerfell, Ryan Leaf’s NFL failed careers) and can will be an asset for any NFL team he plays for. The dude is a freak!!

His throwing mechanics are tottaly off.
He will not be a starting QB that will win games.
He’s gonna be a carrer backup and wildcat gimmick.

there are some explosive white guys. Joe Alexander was by far the best athlete in the NBA draft a couple years ago, tho now he’s in europe. And i’m sure you’re familiar with Sam McGuffie. he’s not just fast at the top end, he’s got burst and cuts as good as anyone

Lil' Nog
Arguably lost to Jason Brilz, a much less accomplished wrestler then Bader, and a fighter who doesn’t posses the intangebles that Bader has (Strenght, Size, such a skilled team to train with).
I see Bader taking Nog down over and over again, and ending the fight via G’n"p in the 2nd round.
Strenght and Size
are pretty tangibles.

Agreed
Everyone wants to say Bader Rolls, but Nog is the best boxer and the best BJJ practitioner that he has faced. This will be a test. Nog should have a slight edge in the striking and the ground play should be fairly competitive.
Nog on top is interesting but I don't see him catching Bader from his guard he can set up some scrambles but I don't think he catches Bader out of position.
Nog could pull out a KO, so could Bader however.

I think a lot of this fight comes down to Nog’s sweeps. Getting a sub from guard is pretty tough these days, but if he can set up a sweep (hopefully from an omaplata ‘cause it’s sweet) it’s his fight to win.
@rask4p on Twitter
Yeah I just don't see him sweeping Bader into any bad positions forcing hi to stand up yes but into anthing precarious I doubt it.
If Nog wins I think he wins on the feet. His hands are much faster than Bader’s and while I think Bader’s head movement is up to par he still just kinda wades in there and that’s where Nog would catch him. Still like I said I like Bader in this one

I agree, but I think round 1 will tell the story of the fight. When Nog gets takendown in the first the fight will be won or lost by how much danger Bader feels from Nog’s guard. If Nog throws a bunch of sub attempts Bader might not feel comfortable going to for takedowns in the 2nd and 3rd.
