BJ Penn Wants To "Get a Fight as Soon as Possible"

"I have just been hanging out this last couple of days. But I am going to stick to what I said about being as active as I can. So that is it, I am going to try to contact the UFC, get a fight as soon as possible. Luckily I did not get injured so I got no injuries. I can still build off what I built in the last camp. I did not go out, I did not party or anything so that is it."

Give him John Fitch. This way BJ doesn’t rerail any of the up and coming lightweights by beating them, and at the same time prove that Jon Fitch doesn’t deserve a title shot vs GSP if BJ beats him.

Prove Fitch doesn't deserve a title shot?

I’m no big Jon Fitch fan, the guy has earned his rematch more than anyone else.

And do you think that BJ got better in these last 2 years?

by TyTy on Sep 1, 2010 9:03 AM EDT up reply actions

Depends

He’s had several fights with mixed results.

Fact is, Jon Fitch vs. BJ Penn is an absurd fight to make and benefits no one. It creates the likely scenario that BJ Penn will suffer from three straight losses and doesn’t change Jon Fitch’s rightfully earned number 1 contender status.

The best matches for BJ right now are either a rematch with Gomi or a trilogy fight with Hughes.

haha you’re probably right. it’s too early right now for me to attempt to make a cohesive argument. I just wanted someone to kick Fitch’s ass, since no one in the welterweight division has stepped up to do it besides GSP

No one has stepped up to do it?

What does that even mean? Jon Fitch is a very very good fighter. It’s not like all the fighters who’ve lost to him have decided they just weren’t going to kick his ass. A little credit where credit is due.

In my opinion

Fitch can only earn a rematch by making people think something different would happen in this fight, not by derailing a bunch of other fighters (most of whom, I would add, were not superstars). Since losing to GSP, the biggest names he beat were Alves (who GSP tooled) and Paulo Thiago (who Kampmann tooled). I just don’t see this as having earned a rematch.

I’m not saying I think the Penn fight is a good idea – Penn should fight at LW with the idea to giving him another shot at the strap after 2-3 wins.

Fitch, on the other hand, can wait till after Koscheck/the winner of Shields Kampmann/possibly Silva, until he finishes a fight. Let him take on a real rising star like Kim, Hendricks or Hathaway in a #1 contender fight at the end of the year.

by Clifford J on Sep 1, 2010 9:11 AM EDT up reply actions

He beats the number 3 WW

But that’s not good enough. Fantastic logic. I’m no Jon Fitch fan but it’s pure hate to say he hasn’t earned his shot. He has the wins and he can only beat the guys put in front of him.

There’s different ways to “beat” someone. You can either do something dramatic like get the stoppage or deliver an intense beating on them for 3 rounds, or you can win leave it up to the judges and win the decision mostly on positional dominance. Not all wins are equal

by TyTy on Sep 1, 2010 9:22 AM EDT up reply actions

Of course not

But, if Fitch beats the other people who may be in line for a title shot, then how can he possibly not be awarded the opportunity?

Bullshit

If we’re going to call MMA a sport, then a win is a win. If the decision were left to you, would you be willing to sewer a mans career because you don’t like his fighting style?

I mean look, he beat the highest ranked fighter outside of the champion in the division. What other possible measure could there be to see if he’s deserving of his title shot?

Sometimes MMA fans need to pull their heads out of their asses and accept reality, Jon Fitch is the clear number 2 WW in the world and the clear number 1 contender.

One has to keep in mind that MMA is still a relatively new sport that is still in the process of refining its ruleset. This was like the NBA back in the day, when there was no shot clock. Basically, a team could score one point and hold on to the ball for the rest of the game and play it safe and still win the game. Did the team that do this win the game based on the rules? Yes. But were they the better of the two teams in the true sense of basketball? Hard to determine when they don’t even play

This is my view on fighting right now. Sure, positional dominance is a factor in deciding who wins the fight, since the person who is able to control the opponent dictates the location of the fight. The person able to establish positional dominance, under the current rule set, is the winner of the fight. But are they truly the superior fighter? Hard to say. Similar to the shot clock conundrum, the wrestler’s can get the win within the current rules of MMA, but is that true to the spirit of MMA? MMA should be about who is the fighter able to inflict the most damage to the opponent and put a stoppage to the match. However, I don’t the current ruleset reflects this aspect of fighting as well as it could.

by TyTy on Sep 1, 2010 10:40 AM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

"MMA should be about who is the fighter able to inflict the most damage"

Completely disagree. Martial arts is about neutralizing and disabling your opponent, in some cases that means damage, in some cases it doesn’t.

Fact is this, none of that addresses Jon Fitch’s title shot. He’s won fights under the rules that exist. It’s stupid to think he isn’t the number 1 contender.

Well, I'm not stupid

And I would rank the winner of Shields/Kampmann higher than him. Reasonable people can disagree.

You write like Fitch has not already had his shot. But he has. And he got utterly annihilated. There is no reason to think Fitch would do any better this time. Beating up on lower level fighters or guys GSP has already destroyed does not change any of that.

It has nothing to do with Fitch being boring, and everything to do with him having already had a chance and not capitalizing.

I respect your opinion, and I know where you’re coming from, and sooner or later Fitch is going to get his 2nd shot by default. But I would put Shields or Kampmann first, and I would still rather see the superfight with A. Silva, before another Fitch rematch.

I was under the impression that BJ wasn’t worried too much about the takedown, since he didn’t think that Frankie would do much damage on the ground. I also think that his cardio in the later rounds is what made him easier to take down towards the latter half of the match

I like this match for Penn. Guida has some name recognition and is a solid journeyman fighter but has almost no conceivable paths to victory. I think Penn needs a fight like this to get back on track.

Guida would give BJ nightmares in a fight, the last thing Penn needs is a guy who will take him down and make his life miserable he’s already had enough of that from GSP. They better give BJ a guy who doesn’t have great takedowns that’s the best way to get him back on track because the blueprint to beat BJ is set and unless guys pull a Sherk or Florian he’ll be in all sorts of trouble.
