Alan Belcher talks about his detached retina surgery:
He does not yet know what will be the final outcome of the situation, but he will not regain 100% vision in his right eye and worst case scenario it will not get any better which would mean he would not fight anymore. He has a good attitude toward it and is currently spending time with his family and his gym, Remix MMA.

Awful news
"I am a man who pisses largely and frequently, which they say is a sign of great mental activity" -Henry Miller-
This is so unfortunate
Nothing but the best for Belcher

How does a Retina detach exactly?
"If I woke up looking like that, I would run towards the nearest living thing and kill it." -Master Shake
Getting a finger in the eye
or just getting hit in the eye hard enough.I hope he fully recovers from this, I like him a lot
Damn, shit sounds brutal

I think sometimes it just happens
Even with no contact or anything

I wonder if the flight home was a factor in this. Pressure changes usually affect eyes and the ears somewhat. Wish he’d been able to get it taken care of in Brazil, then come back.

South American Surgery?
I’m not so sure that would be wise considering he has the option to get work done in the USA. I’m not in the medical field, but my ex-wife is Bolivian. Which pretty much makes me an expert on anything Spanish. And that wisdom would have advised Mr. Belcher to indeed forgo surgical ineptitude in South America and roll the dice the ineptitude here in the States isn’t as awful.
I hope he’s able to fight again, the guy is super exciting to watch. I also appreciate his dedication to getting better between every fight (training in Thailand). Little known fact: Smokin’ Joe Frazier had no vision in one of his eyes for most of his career. And when Ali pounded his good eye shut in their third fight, he was essentially blind for 3 rounds. But boxing is never called “human cockfighting,” even in the historical sense by most? ha!
detached retina is a serious ordeal. it effectively ended the career of sugar ray leonard and david reid along with many others.
i’m hopeful for alan he’s from my hometown and he’s made it further than anyone else in jonesboro has in this sport so he has always given me someone to cheer for.

Terrible
That really sucks. Here’s hoping he gets the best possible results.
"You stick a microphone in a guy's face and he calls out anybody but the champion, and Joe Silva should fax him a pink slip right then." -- Chael Sonnen.
Docotors typically say recovery is generally better the sooner the detachment is detected and fixed. The longer one waits to have the surgery the less likely the vision returns.
My dad had a deteached retina that did not get fixed right away, because his vision didn’t immediately go out and he was in no pain. He gradually started to loose his vision, which prompted his visit to his doctor.
They completed surgery right away, where they injected a gas into his eye to return it to the appropriate pressure level. He was then required to wear an eye patch and lay on his stomach all day and night for a week, with the exception of when he would eat, shower, piss, etc. After the week they replaced the gas with an oil, again to maintain pressure. As far as I can remember the oil starts to disapate over time, but my dad says vision out of that eye always seems smeared/blurry.
I hope the best for Alan, but I can’t imagine combat sports would be good for someone who’s suffered through that type of injury.
