Anderson Silva Out Until February or March 2011 With Cracked Rib

"After the first round he [Anderson Silva] said he broke his ribs. He said told me he could not breath because of the rib. I told him to forget the rib and work the movement of legs and he would get the triangle… After the fight he went to the hospital and did an x-ray and the doctor said he did not break it, it was just a crack," Lemos said.

"Anderson is expected to return in February or March."

by Austin Martin on Aug 9, 2010 6:59 PM EDT reply actions

no doubt what AS did was incredible. being able to maintain a champion’s mind through 4 + rounds. But the punch that stumbled him in the beginning was all chael, and i don’t believe AS could’ve stopped Chael’s takedowns anyways.

Plus, if this rib injury were that serious or obvious, Chael wouldn’t HAD to had noticed something when beating on AS. I’m thinking that this is all smoke and mirrors because no one wants to just admit Silva got his ass beat before pulling off an astounding finish

He did notice something didn't he?

He said in the press conference he believed Silva when he said he wasn’t feeling well because he expected more resistance and it was almost to easy. Or something like that.

i mean, noticing something mid fight. Like if he noticed anderson grimace or breath harder every time he landed a body blow or takedown. but we didn’t see any deviation from his gameplan. except getting fucking triangled. And i was all see to write an article on the rebirth of GNP in the UFC (Frankie, GSP, Chael, Rashad, Brock)

Even when I'm laying on my back I'm never backing down

Oh I gotcha

And you could still write that piece. Just because Anderson is amazing doesn’t discount the fact that GNP is back.

Meaning

Silva is probably the only MW in the UFC that would have pulled through that and won. He is exceptional.

SIlva’s not amazing, my god!!! I thought this would dispel some of this nonsense but apparently not. He got exposed hardcore like I said he would. The fact that Chael was so incredibly reckless in the guard meant he was begging Silva to armbar him. Even so it took him 5 rounds to eventually seal a miracle comeback over a 1 dimensional wrestler. This performance proved how overrated Silva is no other way to spin it.

2 Ways to Spin THIS
  • Chael Sonnen CHOKED.
  • The way I look at it is, Chael fought his fight. And Chael had Anderson on his back for twenty-two minutes of that fight. …The way I feel is that Chael had Anderson in the position he wanted him, and if he wasn’t able to finish Anderson in twenty-two minutes in the position you said you wanted him in, then, hey man, you had your shot. - Ed Soares
  • Cracked ribs and all, Anderson Silva still found a way to win.

What more do you want?

seriously

even if it was all Chael that cracked his ribs (even though they said it happened during trainning), AS still managed to win, which is amazing going through 4 rounds with a cracked rib. Shogun broke Page’s rib in their fight, had Page gone on to win it it would have been amazing also. People just can’t recognize because they hate AS.

The severity of rib injuries vary and determine whether an athlete can continue through the pain or find it unbearable. Anderson’s injury was painful, but people are blowing it out of proportion as well as the recovery time.

That’s dumb. He said he was expecting more resistance. That would imply he thought Silva would be a tougher fight than he actually was prior to the miracle submission. ALl this means is his expectations of the fight were not in line with what happened, it says nothing about whether or not Silva actually was injured. Personally, I tend to think he’s just always been THAT overrated.

Thanks for that insightful comment. Has he ever fought a healthy silva? No—so he has no point of reference of what a “healthy” SIlva fights like. Any expectations he had beforehand of how a healthy Silva would perform were purely guesswork. This should be very obvious.

BTW I believe you were one of those mocking me when I explained how overrated all of Silva’s past opponents were. Put him in against a 170 lb wrestler (i.e. fitch, koscheck, gsp, even Askren)/ with decent submission defense he loses 100% this fight validated everything I’ve been saying about him. He’s just physically too weak to ever be even a decent wrestler.

It does,

I broke 4 ribs not cracked. And it was from getting body shots from a swat guy. I was oblivious to the fact to bring my elbows down and further in to protect myself. I was out 6 weeks on light duty.

I had a bruised rib once

after getting jumped in college. It hurt for about a month and a half straight if I took too big a breath, got out of a seat too fast, or got up out of bed the wrong way. Anything that required a hard contraction of my abs came with pain. After 2 months, it still hurt, not every time I did something that could cause pain, but sometimes.

A “cracked” rib is going to take alot longer to recover from than 3-6 weeks.

With Silva out till March they don’t need two contenders as much as they used to. What they do need is to make sure that they have a strong contender in March. Sonnen vs Belfort is a big time match that creates some big time hype for a title fight in March for the winner. Belfort vs Leben and Sonnen vs Bisping/Akiyama just risk both top contenders against less established ones.

Same goes for Chris Leben, yea he’s had some really good fights and we know that he can drop a guy but even if he beat Belfort would he really be number one contender level? They need a contender for Feb/March and they will need another one for next May or June, they have time to build one of the other guys up for next summer but they don’t need to risk both of their big time contenders before March.

It's 6+ months till he fights again.

That includes healing the ribs and then getting a full training camp on and probably some time to get back into shape. Two months of no contact because of the ribs, 2-3 months of training. A February or March return is totally understandable.

by av1o3 on Aug 9, 2010 8:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly, it’s not 6 months off for injury it’s 6 months till he is ready to fight again. I’m sure there will be a 3 month training camp in there (at least) to get him back in shape after sitting on his ass for 2 months doing absolutely nothing but healing. I mean it’s not like he was going to fight again before November or December anyway, it takes time to train for a fight.

by who me on Aug 9, 2010 9:34 PM EDT up reply actions

My issue was with the headline. It’s kinda misleading. It implies that Anderson will be out of action/commission until Feb/March nursing his rib injury. Ribs don’t take that long to heal. That’s all I was trying to say. The headline and the information contained in the post aren’t exactly saying the same thing.

I specializes in grammar fail.

by a tommy point on Aug 9, 2010 10:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Why does anyone give a rats ass about the headline? I have yet to understand why people seem to get bent out of shape about headlines when the only reason they exist is to try and get you to read the article? If you read the article then you got the information, the headline (which didn’t mislead or confuse me at all) is just an advertising blurb that is meaningless if you don’t read the actual article anyway.

Silva will be out of action until Feb/March, that doesn’t mean that he will be hurt that long it just means he won’t be taking a fight before then. The action in question is his next fight.

by who me on Aug 9, 2010 10:48 PM EDT up reply actions

That's what I thought too when reading this

I had a cracked rib earlier this summer.. it took about 5-6 weeks for it to heal (that’s when I no longer felt any pain from it anyway). Assuming that in most cases it’s supposed to take no longer than two months for it to heal completely, being out until february/march next year seems kind of excessive. They probably know what they are doing, but still, it sucks.

you mean the same Sonnen that said he wasn't 100% before the fight even took place?

that Sonnen wouldn’t have said a thing? GTFOH

It’s amazing what people come up with.

We are talking about Chael Sonnen here, I’m surprised he didn’t lie and say he had cracked ribs too. He’s a guy who has a long history of tapping out and then denying he did. Why do people think he’s some one honorable who doesn’t make excuses now?

It’s difficult to sleep with a cracked rib. I can’t imagine fighting with one.

Gotta put these guys on TUF

It’s a perfect opportunity. Let Belfort fight somebody else since he’s not getting his title shot anytime soon anyway.

Belfort vs. Leben, Sonnen vs. Palhares if he wins or winner of Bisping/Akiyama

And then the UFC can pick who ever for Silva next year.

That explaines his lack of "Spider Sense"/matrix like striking defense and speed.

as ubernoober mentioned, dude is 35 and has just went through his first real War.

We won’t know the long term effects of this until his next performance.

absolutely hillarios, I said it before and now i’ll say it again if you’re scared say you’re scared just stop the bullshit. Seriously everytime out the story changes with this guy and the worst thing is now his worshippers will try and turn him into a hero because of this crap. The fact is IF and it’s a big IF he hurt his ribs is because Sonnen hurt them. For once I just wish that Silva and his entire camp would man up who knew that being a great fighters still made you a whinny excuse making machine what a joke.

It always bothers me in sports when an athlete says “I’m not trying to make an excuse” and then gives an excuse. Fighters fight injured all the time, and sustain much worse injures during a fight but persevere. The doctor even said it wasn’t a full on fracture but rather a crack. Football players play with bruised and cracked ribs all the time.

by Stroma on Aug 9, 2010 10:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Football players aren’t MMA fighters not to mention they are free to drug them up on pain killers before/during NFL games.

That current/past players gripe about all the time. They also have individual teams worth more than the entire UFC and a gross revenue higher than some countries yet the players still have to fund most of their own insurance and retirement.

you guys are missing the point

it doesn’t matter if his ribs were cracked before the fight or if it was Chael who cracked them. What matters is that Anderson survived four rounds getting hit in the ribs (while they were cracked) and still managed to keep his cool and went on to win the fight. that’s legendary…

I’m sorely tempted to call five shades of bulls**t on this one. I suspect many of us remember the way Anderson was and/or wasn’t injured not too long ago – if one were to listen and believe to Ed Soares, that is. What goodwill Silva managed to pick up with this fight will be gone in an instant if his ‘minders’ start pulling this crap again. For Pete’s sake, Spider, man up!

by Monday Morning Martial Artist on Aug 9, 2010 10:30 PM EDT reply actions

Man up? How?

I’m sure Dana will want to see his medical records on this one, it’s not like they are going to let him not fight for 6 months just because his jiu jitsu coach said he was injured. If he’s hurt he’s hurt and if he isn’t then it will end up coming out soon enough.

by who me on Aug 9, 2010 10:56 PM EDT up reply actions

I was referring to Silva’s on-again off-again injuries. If he’s injured, okay, he needs to take time to recover (as infuriating as that may be) but at the moment this sounds like a ploy to avoid defending his title.

On a slightly unrelated note – if Silva is indeed out until March ’11, an interim title match might be in order (Sonnen-Belfort in November?)

by Monday Morning Martial Artist on Aug 10, 2010 4:45 AM EDT up reply actions

Why an interim title for a guy who is basically only missing one fight? For guys who fight on average every 4 months(3 times a year) missing 6-7 isn’t a huge deal.

As far as a ploy to avoid defending the belt, how? if the guy isn’t actually injured then the UFC is going to make the fight regardless of what his BJJ coach says to Tatame.

he did have surgery on his elbow...

I don’t understand people doubting they were hurt, why have surgery if they were ok?

Someone should post a gif

Anderson puts his hand over his ribs when he walks back to the corner after round 1. It looks like he’s signaling to his corner that he’s hurt without saying anything. I’m sure they all knew about it because his corner never mentioned it during the fight. True champion mentality.

by DepthApproach on Aug 9, 2010 11:38 PM EDT reply actions

That's what I saw

I rewatched the fight and he clearly points to his right side as he’s walking back to his corner after the first round. I think he was really injured. It’s somewhat believable given how uncharacteristically sloppy his stand up looked.

I went back and looked

And I see it. Very very subtle. But he does point/touch his right rib area when only his corner can see as if to say “It’s giving me problems.”

What a beast this guy is.

"You stick a microphone in a guy's face and he calls out anybody but the champion, and Joe Silva should fax him a pink slip right then." -- Chael Sonnen.

Gotta hand it to Anderson.

This is the second time he fought with an injury, even when he could easily have pulled out.

I am curious why noone is suggesting

that Chael and Vitor fight while Anderson is healing.

The other thing I would like to see is TUF USA vs Brazil. Chael and Lindland (team quest) leading the US (featuring wrestlers) vs Anderson and Big Nog (team blackhouse) (featuring Jiu Jitsu practitioners). I know I wouldn’t miss an episode.

Dana White hates Matt Lindland. And Lindland is not stupid, he would come at a price.
It simply won’t work.
