Quote of the Day: Anderson Silva - "I Told Rodrigo [Nogueira] I'd Get the Submission"
I’m a Nogueira brothers black belt, and I’d give my life for them. I say that and I don’t need to patronize them nor them me. Rodrigo is my master and Rogério is a brother and teacher to me. If it weren’t for them, I wouldn’t be here today. I decided to put on the gi as a tribute to them and for the things I’d said. I told Rodrigo I’d get the submission this fight. I told him that. Everything worked out yet again.
Now all I’m thinking about is to get home and rest, go to the doctor and get treatment. After that we’ll see what’s to be done.
--Anderson Silva, told Gracie Mag that he promised Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira a submission, and wore a gi as a tribute to him.

maybe not necessarily a huge feat...
But rewarding nonetheless b/c of Chael’s comments towards the Nog’s. I think its awesome for Anderson that that’s how he ended the fight

In my opinion,
Weathering the WMDs headed for his face, taking a beating for 22minutes, and then locking in a deep triangle arm bar that Chael(no matter how gay he thinks BJJ is) had been defending against for 4 1/2 rounds to get the submission victory- is nothing short of a monumental feat.

It would have been akward had he not got that last minute sub.
GSP is an alien sent here to humiliate our men and mate with our women
GSP
He has a better resume, is more well rounded, and one of his area’s of strength is an area of weakness for Anderson. Seems pretty straight forward to me.

Shit, then he must not have any losses on his record.
Especially not to anyone like Matt Serra.

it's hilarious
when people say GSP has a better resumé, when Anderson has yet to lose in the UFC. it’s also hilarious when they say GSP is more well rounded, when he stays away from the stand up game since losing to Serra.
the following two things are signs of weaknesses:
stay silent when it's needed to speak up, and speak up when it's needed to stay silent.
Hey, I'm not here to bag on GSP
But saying that he’s better than Anderson because Anderson WON a fight is a little crazy. We have no idea how GSP would do with a guy like Chael (who really was at the top of his game). Yes GSP has faced wrestlers, but not wrestlers that set up their shots with striking as well as Chael did. Comparing fighters for P4P lists is already something of an MMA Math masturbation festival, but counting a win as a loss is nuts.
And we certainly don’t know the ACTUAL extent of Silva’s injury going into the fight. If he wasn’t injured, then whatever. If he was, would the fight have gone the way it did without that injury? Would GSP fight with an injury like that? How well?
Don't believe a word I say, I don't train BJJ.

How is it hilarious?
GSP has fought and beaten tougher opponents then Anderson.
And from where i’m standing, losing via basically punchers chance is much less devastating then getting dominated for more then 90% of a fight.
What’s hilarious is your ignorance on the issue. GSP stays away from the stand up? Have you watched the Alves fight (51% stand up according to fightmetric)? Or perhaps the Fitch fight? The Penn fight even? All post Serra, all contain a good amount of striking.
"Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former - Albert Einstein"

And from where i’m standing, losing via basically punchers chance is much less devastating then getting dominated for more then 90% of a fight.
So losing a certain way > winning a certain way.
Alrighty then.

More often then not Serra doesn’t KO GSP and Anderson doesn’t get the sub off his back (seriously, subs from the back are rare). Basically IMO The GSP loss and Anderson’s wins were flukes.
"Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former - Albert Einstein"

given Sonnen's history of losing via subs
how can you call that a fluke? crazy…
the following two things are signs of weaknesses:
stay silent when it's needed to speak up, and speak up when it's needed to stay silent.
let's see
Anderson took a big punch from Chael, survived, and went on to win via sub
GSP took a big punch from Serra, and crumbled…
GSP himself said that he chooses to always go for the ground battle instead of fighting stand up, so don’t take my word for it ok. I’m not trying to even compare the two, just showing how it’s hilarious people that do (like you).
the following two things are signs of weaknesses:
stay silent when it's needed to speak up, and speak up when it's needed to stay silent.

A comeback like that happens in all sports. The Lakers were losing badly to the Celtics in game 7 of the NBA Finals, but around the third or fourth quarter, the Lakers came back and ended up winning the Championship. Fedor, like you said, has done that for years. Anderson Silva’s weakness has always been wrestling, but he proved to be a Champion and P4P best by finding a way to win despite getting outwrestled by Sonnen. It can be argued that GSP is not the best striker in the Welterweight Division, but he still manages to find a way to win against these better strikers. The point I’m trying to make here is that even these fighters that are considered the P4P best have weaknesses, but they still win despite having these weaknesses.

What’s Chael gonna come back with that he didn’t have to use in the first fight? BJJ? Why, whenever he’s so damn successful with his wrestling?
And now Anderson has been in a fight with Chael’s wrestling for 20+ minutes.
So you’re just saying that this will be the first fight where someone learns absolutely nothing?
BS, I say. Silvas gonna know how Chael moves, how Chael was setting up(or lack thereof), and what Chaels gonna be doing on the ground(guard, all the time baby).
And he’s, hopefully- gonna be back at 100%.
Nightmares are on tap, if Chael somehow doesn’t switch up his game plan. I doubt he will, though. Like with the leg kick-take down, you see Silva go for that in every fight. Before the fight in Chael’s locker room you saw him and his coach trying that exact same counter- and it worked. Chaels gonna be at a distinct disadvantage this time around, and for good reason- unlike the first go around when we just didn’t know if his game plan would even work for sure.
You said alot of things.
I simply agreed on this statement " I would love to see him try."

But I won’t pick against Jon Jones again until I see him lose. - Kwisatz Haderach

Because I don’t see it as Silva “trying” anything. If you’ve got a rematch, it’s a foregone conclusion that Silvas gonna be bringing new things to the table.
What have we ever seen thats new from Sonnen? lol Why would he even have to incorporate anything new? Ya know? It’s worked amazingly well thus far.

You need to take a relaxing walk, get a massage, bust a nut or spark a bowl

I’m sure he had to figure he’d be put on his back, and yeah he was most certainly looking for a KO if he could find one but that doesn’t change the fact that he still might have just honestly told Noguiera this and is simply conveying this to the rest of us with no bullshit motives behind it.

soares is garbage.
i wish they had shown him bouncing around like jimmy hart and taunting sonnen on the broadcast. His guy got the living hell beat out of him for 23 minutes and pulled off one of the greatest comebacks ever. then soares completely ruins what could have been a classy ending to everything when he starts hopping and pointing like he is the one who hit the triangle. he is lucky that sonnen didn’t have a huge posse in his corner because there would have been a brawl. he should be banned from ringside.

I know that Chael outstruck Anderson by a large margin but I am fairly certain the vast majority of those were strikes on the ground since that is where 90% of the fight took place. Maybe the people in the rows in front of me were in my way during the stand up Chael dominated.

But that's completely hypothetical.
You’d have to take into account that Silva would improve on everything Sonnen showed us, and you’re not doing that.
The whole Rocky thing falls apart as well. Silva was obviously the hero of the night, he made an amazing come back. How anyone could see it in any other light, is ridiculous lol
You hear all the former WWF fans calling him a “heel”, and then you get comments like this where guys call him Rocky lol Ridiculous!
i dunno what’s so ridiculous about making the rocky comparison, he was an average fighter going up vs. the top guy and impressed everyone by how long he lasted, and ultimately lost. fought with alot of heart. i’m impresseed by silva too, always am, as long as he doesn’t act like an asshole like he did vs. maia/cote/leites, etc. i won’t go as far as calling him heel, his manager ed soares is a shady motherfucker though, no denying that.
Never understoof the ahte on Soares, seems like a lot of people are just siding with whatever Chael says in that regard, lol
The underdog bit- Ok, I can see that. But as Dana or anyone else with a brain could tell you- Sonnen wasn’t a true underdog, because his wrestling pedigree made this a very close fight for him.
And that’s exactly what happened. The second he took over- killed any Rocky comparison lol
You can easily make the case for Sonnen being a villain. You couldn’t do that with Silva. He was a defending champ, defending his livelyhood. And he got beat down- HARD, lol His comeback victory was totally Rocky-esq!
nah dude, i still stand by my assertation that chael was the “rocky” in this fight. but like i said, i’m a true andrson silva fan (got the action figure and EVERYTHING) but hope to hell that chael learns some better jits defense. after maia beat him, it would’ve benefited him and maia for them to train together, like chael did with okami.
Well,
Okami sucked it up, and asked Chael lol
Do you really think a guy like Sonnen will do something like that?
Then again- after something like that, he’d be a fool not to. I’m still gonna say don’t count on it. Even if Rich went and trained with Andy.
Cue the conspiracy theorists
“He was playing opossum.”
"I am a man who pisses largely and frequently, which they say is a sign of great mental activity" -Henry Miller-
Conspiracy or not..
Silva took a clean 2-3 shots to the face with his hands completely down. When he had the opportunity to get in guard- he went for it. He even broke off a locked in kimura and a leg lock to get Sonnen back in guard
Playing opossum is a stretch, but he was definitely trying to prove a point- believe it or not.
Although- go to MMAfighting.com and read all of the “fight was fixed!11” posts for a good laugh..
I don't want to be a conspiracy theorist...
But so many things seemed off that night. Maybe Anderson doesn’t like 185 anymore, and maybe his injury hampered him… hell, maybe Chael had the best night of his fighting career… watever the case, I don’t think its unfair to say that Anderson looked quite a bit different than his usual, nor do I think its unfair to say that he did some shit on purpose (drop his hands after getting clipped in the first). In the end I think it was probably a bit of all things combined, resulting in a hell of a show.
by Broke Lesnar on Aug 9, 2010 11:07 AM EDT up reply actions
I also think after 3 more viewings
A lot of the action was pure shock and awe, with emotions running high. I don’t think Anderson was ever in any real danger of being finished, and I do think he won the majority of the stand up (as little as it was) after the first round, hurting Sonnen the most in the 4th. His work from the back was also good when he was active, and that sub in the end seemed to be setup throughout the fight. Sonnen was a man possessed, and yet Anderson still came out victorious. It was a great fight no matter who u were rooting for.
