Around SBN: Dana White Announces Koscheck vs. Hendricks for UFC on FOX

Today on MMA Nation on 106.7 The Fan: UFC 117 Breakdown, Roger Huerta Update, UFC 118 and Strikeforce Houston Preview

Live streaming video by Ustream

Remember, we are  now on: Sundays 9 to 11pm EST.

Today on MMA Nation we'll be breaking down everything from last night's very dramatic UFC 117:

1. What's next for Anderson Silva? Take the poll below to cast your vote.

2. Is Anderson Silva getting old? Will the 20 minute beating at the hands of Sonnen affect future performances? Just how good or bad was his takedown defense.

3. Specifically, what are the reasons Sonnen was triangled?

4. Where does the main event rank in terms of all-time comebacks? Is this bigger than George Foreman defeating Michael Moorer for the heavyweight title?

5. Is there a chink in the armor of Junior dos Santos?

6. Will Jon Fitch actually get the title shot against St. Pierre? What will he do if Koscheck wins?

And, of course, we are taking YOUR CALLS throughout the entire show. So much to talk about, so get your thoughts in early and often.

"MMA Nation" will air tonight 9:00pm EST to 11:00pm EST on 106.7 The Fan. To listen live over the Internet, go to The Fan's website and click "Listen Live".

I'm also on Twitter: @mmanation.

AS A NEW FEATURE: We'll stream the show live over UStream.tv. Here's my channel. I'll embed the live stream player in this post when the show begins. If you want to ask a question for us to answer on air, leave a question in the comments section. We'll get to all of them.

"MMA Nation" is also available by podcast on iTunes. For now, iTunes is disabled, but the show will be posted on the station's website soon afterward. I'll be sure to put a post up when they're ready to go. And when we're back on iTunes, I'll put up a link to that as well.

also,

you should talk about that during the show.

makes a lot more sense to me, more than anything. it wasn’t a split decision, it wasn’t controversial- Sonnen needs to get back in line, and there’s still a Top 10 Hulk Brazilian he hasn’t beat.

Respect to Sonnen though, none of you fanboys need to get pissy with me because I saw him tap.

I don't want to see an immediate rematch..

I want to see Silva vs. belfort and Sonnen vs another top contender. Silva would have to wait a while for GSP. Let’s do Maia vs. Sonnen again haha

I like to put these shows on my mp3 player and listen at work later and these links make it so much easier to get the show.

I appreciate this.

no problem at all… dont even get me started on the station Luke broadcasts from and their bass ackwards way of hosting/posting podcast content. Its a nightmare, especially for those trying to listen on a mobile device.

They only have one show that is allowed to be actually “podcasted” (meaning an rss feed downloadable through itunes) and that has turned into such a nightmare fans have started their own site to post the links on their own —> http://cbsradiohateslisteners.blogspot.com/

Jon Fitch should get the title shot.

Why do people boo and hate on the way fitch fights? He dominated Alves with some very good wrestling and bjj combo.

Because

The Decision machine can’t finish :P

I respect Fitch greatly, but there’s more he could do, that he simply doesn’t because he’s too scared of taking chances. Once he opens that part of his game up, I’m sure the TKOs and Subs will come in rolling.

Let Sonnen fight the Belfort-Silva winner

Its a win-win. We get to see Silva fight someone different, with an anticipated rematch if he wins. Belfort-Sonnen would be equally good given the Lindland Team Quest backstory.

This is what leads to my question

did this epic win last night do more to further the legacy of Silva or hurt his overall image? I’ve heard people say that this cements him as being one of the greatest, while others would just rather consider this as being as bad as a loss. Seems like when a guy like Nog pulls this off it endears him more to the fans, but is our overall perception of Anderson’s abilities so incredibly high that to see him put in a fight like this going to just do more for people actually losing faith in him?

Belfort should be last on this list

When some wild-eyed, eight-foot-tall maniac grabs your neck, taps the back of your favorite head up against the barroom wall, and he looks you crooked in the eye and he asks you if ya paid your dues, you just stare that big sucker right back in the eye, and you remember what ol' Jack Burton always says at a time like that: "Have ya paid your dues, Jack?" "Yessir, the check is in the mail." - Jack Burton

by donkeypunch on Aug 8, 2010 6:17 PM EDT reply actions

He can totally be beaten.

..Well, no shit? Anyone can be beaten, but nobody HAS beaten Silva.

As long as you try and “grind out” a BJJ specialist- you haven’t done shit.

There are no blueprints. GSP takes Andy out? That’s funny, because Georgey is in the same boat as Fitchy and Chael-e(lol). None of them can finish a fucking fight.

And no, I’m not a huge Anderson fan. I respect what he brings to the table, which NOBODY ELSE brings to the table.

Dude can get bombed on after 4 1/2 rounds, and pull out the win. Respect it, because if that doesn’t say invincibility, I dunno what does- and likely you’ll never know what does, because as of right now- we haven’t seen anybody prove they can beat him.

If anything, this blueprint you speak of is a theory. And theories ain’t fact, buddy.

Really?

You’re gonna bring up his mere 4 losses, even though he is now a different beast? And Okami? Even a “sort of” doesn’t give you a cclaim that Okami can beat Silva.

Ok, then..(and lets go backwards, to make it really interesting)
Chael Sonnen, Maia, Griffin, Leites, Cote, Irvin, Hendo, Rich 2x, Marquardt, Lutter, Zombie Leben.

Maybe next time? No, probably not.

And in regards to Tomasi- I find it funny that all the Sonnen fanboys want to see him get a ridiculous rematch, even though he lost- like he always does. Tappin’, denying, and then coming to terms with the fact that he tapped out in front of a lot of people that also saw him tap out.

Business- ok, that’s an argument. But in the realm of rational thinking- there is no ther good reason for Chael to get a rematch right away. Get back in line and prove yourself against the Top 10 you’re always blabbering about.

You’re engaging in hero worship. Silva got destroyed and pulled out the sub. Good for him. But he’s exposed now as beatable. No, it’s more than that. Chael proved Silva can be totally and completely dominated. Destroyed. Let him go up to 205 and fight Jon Jones and you’ll see what happens to your hero.

By 1st saying that he is his hero, when he wrote nothing to suggest that. Then writing Sonnen showed Anderson was beatable while he lost in spectacular fashion. Kimo also showed that Royce Gracie was beatable , but he still lost and look where that distinction got him?. And then 3rd by keying in on an obvious technical term. It was clear to me that he meant he “can’t be beaten” now, not that he had “never been beat”. Those are 2 very different terms, they don’t teach this type of comprehension at the indian reservation junior college?. 3 strikes boys, take a breather and try again.

Your idea of invicibility is a little different than most. Getting bombed on for 4 1/2 is more of an indication of vulnerability rather than invincability. The idea that AS showed that Chael can’t beat him is ridiculous. When this fight happens again I would be shocked if Chael was any more of an underdog than +180.

Your beliefs become your reality.

by IKilled007 on Aug 8, 2010 6:49 PM EDT reply actions

It's a weird thing.

Everyone is so concerned with the how. Silva rib injury and things didn’t go exactly his way a few times in the fight. He wasn’t so horrible off his back that he was ever in danger. Sonnen must not be throwing with a bunch of power if Silva was willingly eating shot after shot without even blinking.

Going in we all said that there was no way Sonnen would win and he didn’t. That’s all there is to it. Next up is either Vitor or Okami. Probably Belfort.

The reason a rematch wouldn’t make the money that so many think it would is because Chael’s shit talking act is stale now. He went in and lost. No one wants to listen to another 4 months of the exact same shit talk which he was starting to really go over the top with to the point of calling Lance Armstrong out and shit. Then he was getting called out by radio hosts like Jim Rome.

No one wants to hear more of it. By fight time everyone would be sick of it and no one would care.

The Rematch would be great and make a ton

Because Chael kicked his ass for 4.5+ rounds out 5 and almost won by a huge margin until he got caught. Next time, the Champion might not catch him and Chael might go on to win 50-43 in another asskicking. Look, Anderson got mauled in that fight. He got owned for 4+ rounds. Chael ran all over him. It was a one-sided massacre. Your attempt to cast all that aside with a nonchalant wave of your arm is ridiculous. Silva can be beaten. Not just beaten, he can be demolished. And Chael can do it. I don’t blame you for not wanting to see that happen.

I’ve never said I’m a huge Silva fan, and that everyone will beat him.

But Chael did absolutely nothing to convince rationally thinking people that Ground and Pound will finish Silva.

Again, he had 3 subs locked in before Round 5, and let go of 2. It wasn’t this massive beat down you WWE fans are trying to make it out to be. He out-scored him, big whoop, lol He still tapped.

If Chael Sonnen can’t do it- I’m doubtful anyone on the scene can right now. Hendo was leaps ahead of Chael’s wrestling background, and he tapped too.

And looky here,

I’m still here.

Maybe it’s because I was discussing things rationally with members of the interwebs who hate Anderson Silva to the point of starting flame wars with anyone who roots for him.

Yep, that basically sums it up.

I’m no troll, you’re just not used to fans of Anderson Silva sticking up for themselves and destroying you in any argument you decide to ignorantly come up with.

Just grow up, and realize people have different opinions.

But a fight isn’t about an opinion, what happened- happened. You can’t argue you that, no matter how much you hate Anderson Silva. What he did far surpassed Sonnen’s epic ground and pound.

Is this your second account 1251? You can tell me. Lol you guys are a cute couple.

I’d really like for someone to explain to me what the hell Vitor Belfort has done to deserve a title shot since his return.

How about he get at least one win at 185 first?

As best I can tell, this whole Beflort movement stems from him being a big free agent signing (whoopty-doo) and beating Rich Franklin (outside of the division). That’s simply not enough.

If anyone not named Sonnen is going to fight Anderson next, it should be Okami.

yea, that would be best. learn BJJ as much as possible. Just saying Lesnar seemed to have learned how to apply his wrestling in ways to not leave himself open to BJJ too much after his Mir loss; so he might be able to teach him some stuff to learn quicker than learning BJJ.

Plus, they could hang out and go hunting and to political rallies together and stuff.

i will compare this to my feelings on Lesnar/Carwin… I’m a huge Lesnar fan and loved the fact he won. But as a Lesnar fan, I would love to see a rematch with Carwin, even if not immediate just for a more decisive win againt Carwin. Same thing I’d like to see with SIlva and Sonnen. I don’t care that much if Vitor is next; but want him to face Sonnen again soon for the same reason I’d like to see Brock face Carwin again.

I also think the talk of “decisive” victory isn’t coming across right. I don’t think people mean decisive, like a bad decision… like “who won this fight?”. But more like, who is the better fighter long term. Obviously that is why we have matches so that still comes down to “who won the fight”. But who cannot see the difference between BJ’s victory on Sanchez, or SIlva’s on Griffin (etc) vs. something like Silva/Sonnen from last night or Lesnar Carwin or Lesnar Mir.

One might still be definitive; but still leaves questions in the air.

If Sonnen wanted to make a case for not tapping, you’d hear about it. You saw the first Filho fight, right?

If you watch fight, Sonnen is complaining to Rosenthal as Silva is cranking on his arm. Then the cameras immediatley cut away. Then they never showed it in any of the replays, instead focusing soley on the tap. That’s why most people haven’t picked up on it. You have to watch the actual submission sequence in real time to see it.

GSP doesn’t get super agressive against guys he doesn’t feel threatened by. Look at what he did to Penn, Serra and Fitch. He thought those guys posed a threat to him, so he beat them half to death. He didn’t really feel threatened by Hardy, so he took the night off.

Trust me, GSP would feel threatened by Anderson, and would be going after him full force to get him out of there ASAP.

I think GSP really had his heart set on submitting Hardy. Hardy ended up having better defense than GSP thought, and he couldn’t really get his mind around using a different game plan. It was definetly a good learning experience for GSP, because he learned that if Plan A doesn’t work, he needs to be able to transition to Plan B. Greg Jackson was telling him to stay in guard and pound him out, yet GSP kept passing and looking for submissions that just weren’t there. He couldn’t change his game plan.

Could GSP manhandle nate marquart or okami like sonnen did? no.

I want to see Silva fight Belfort, and have Sonnen face whoever. If Sonnen wins he gets another shot. I just don’t want to see Vitor sit out for even longer and I don’t want Sonnen to get two straight losses to Silva. This loss wasn’t controversial like UFC 104 or Penn/Edgar @ 112.

by goodbadugly16 on Aug 8, 2010 9:41 PM EDT reply actions

I really, really like the idea of Chael/Silva on TUF, then Vitor vs. Leben for #1 contender. You don’t overly screw Vitor, because the fight should be in his favor, and will be FUCKING AMAZING, and Silva gets time to recover. Thats just me though.

Driving the Chael Sonnen hype train, here's to hoping we don't get derailed 4/5 of the way to the next station!

What if his rib thing was not an excuse and was an actual issue? What if his rematch against Sonnen goes completely different or he fights GSP at 100% and schools him? That’s the other reason I’d like to see a rematch with Sonnen before he moves on to other fights.

Why couldn’t they mandate that Champion vs Champion superfights have to be 5 rounds even if they’re not for the title?

by dribblebib on Aug 8, 2010 10:07 PM EDT reply actions

I think Nev OK’d five round fights for “special events”, but Dana had said they will never do it. Although that doesn’t always mean anything.

Good point Luke

I never even thought about how gsp’s ground n pound..chael was busy the whole time with elbows and big punches, were gsp has a great ground game but is busy in diffrent areas. I think if gsp was to fight AS he would have to learn from chael and he has to brutalize AS. Just passing Silva’s guard will not do the job.

GSP takedowns vs Sonnen takedowns

Good points about Sonnen walking through Silva’s premise. GSP takedowns are based on timing. Doesn’t that play into Silva’s game more?

I think so. I think Chael was more willing to kinda just go for it vs. what GSP would do.

The sportbar we watched it at last night had an issue with the sound coming across five seconds before the picture. So it was weird hearing the horn at the end of rounds and seeing fighters keep fighting. But everytime something big happened, you could hear the live crowd go crazy, so we knew something big was going to happen. Damn it was noisy when Silva pulled that off.

I think so. This would alleviate the controversy that plagues main events from time to time and further pull MMA into the realm of pure sport instead of sports entertainment.

I think the title shot should always go to the #2 ranked fighter. But, we don’t have official rankings. So, we’re left with a very nebulous set of criteria by which a fighter may or may not be chosen for a title shot.

Give us official rankings and that is solved.

by II SMASH II on Aug 8, 2010 10:39 PM EDT up reply actions

UFC rankings would prove a lot. All that matters is where they, internally, rank the fighters. Instead, we’re left wondering if things like how many PPVs a fighter can sell has a legitimate role in whether or not they are given a title shot. In which case, the sports entertainment aspect looms large over everything that doesn’t take place in the cage.

I specializes in grammar fail.
