Time to eat crow, the Chael Sonnen edition.

When it was announced that Chael Sonnen would be the next man to fight Anderson Silva, my first tought was a bit different than the rest of the MMA community. While the majority of MMA fans exhaled a collective groan, some like me thought maybe it wasn't as clear cut as everyone seemed to think. I promptly threw together a fanpost(much like I am now) minutes after the announcement. I expressed my theory that Sonnen could take the fight where he wanted, and grind out a decision. As August 7th drew closer, my take on the fight began to change. I looked back at Silva's fights I saw that he had an uncanny ability to create a scramble, and take advantage of it. I also noted that Chael seems almost exhausted afer the third round of every fight. About a month ago I finalized my projection of how the fight would go.

1. Chael would come out and get battered early.

2. Chael would get take-downs, but not be able to control Silva long enough to inflict damage.

3. When the third roundcame around both Silva and Chael would be tired, but Silva still fresh enough to avoid take-downs.

4. Chael would make a mistake and eat a bulb-burning combination.

5. Silva retains the belt, and establishes that he can handle a prime elite wrestler.

Of course nothing like this happened. Let me put what we learned from this fight in one statement

ANDERSON SILVA IS A HUMAN BEING!

Chael Sonnen proved once and for all that no one is unbeatable in MMA, ever. Chael rocked Anderson early. Let me say that again; Chael Sonnenrocked Anderson Silva. Going into this fight It was my belief that Anderson had a granite chin. I still think this is true, but out of everyone in the MW division I never expected Chaelto even connect cleanly with Anderson. Chael then proceeded to take Anderson down, and keep him there. 2nd, 3rd, and 4th round went a little differently. Anderson won the stand-up of these rounds handedly, and landed and amazing left elbow that dazed Chael (was it in the 3rd of 4th?), but was taken down and controlled for the rest of the rounds. There was a specific point in the fight that I thought Chael was going to shock the world, when Chael took Silva down in the 4th. All I could think was 'Holy shit, is this happening?' My heart had been racing during this fight for the first time in a long time, and when Silva was taken down in the 5thin final round I do believe my heart stopped. Then I see Silva slap on a b-e-a-utiful triangle. When Chael tapped, I couldn't control myself. I leaped from my seat and yelled, I didn't care if the rest of the bar was playing chess, I still would have expressed my raw and uninhibited joy.

In closing I would like to bring up how fighters always seem invincible until the moment they stumble. At the beginning of last year the out look seemed set in stone. There were four apparently unbeatable champions Silva, GSP, Penn, and Machida. Now before the end of 2010 two of them have lost their belts and the third won by the skin of his teeth. I would like to say, enjoy this while is lasts people, we are in perhaps the Golden Age of MMA.

(P.S. This is very fresh I wanted to post this while the adrenaline was still pumping inside me, not time to edit it of course.)

(P.S.S please be nice. I don't do this for a living :D)
