Called it before the fight:
Cardio - The BIG question. Does Shane Carwin have cardio? He's never gone past the first round. His muscle mass is astounding and we all know that with all that muscle comes a need for the heart to pump fresh oxygenated blood to keep them from building lactic acid. He does train up in the thin air of Colorado, so that can't do anything but help. However, we have seen him pretty winded after a 1st round fight. Adrenaline dump or cardio problems? We won't find out the answer to that until someone takes him out of the first round.

I hope they make a rematch in some way for Sonnen/Silva. That fight was way too lop sided to not have one. Give Silva a chance to either beat him again difinitively or give Sonnen the chance to not screw up and throw himself into a sub after twenty two minutes of domination.

by JeremyShane on Aug 8, 2010 1:23 AM EDT reply actions

Give Silva a chance to either beat him again difinitively

WTF? God damn people, does he have to tap him out before Chael even makes it out to the octagon for the win to be considered legit?

by Hardcase on Aug 8, 2010 1:41 AM EDT up reply actions

wow, defensive much lol
Some of you guys create issues where there are none.

I would just like to see him win without getting dominated for four and a half rounds; that’s all. Doesn’t mean it cant be a battle, but it was extremely one sided and when a fighter pulls of a win after that I like to see a rematch and give both guys a chance to replay how things went down.

Not to mention it’s the best fight we’ve seen Silva in, in a while; so not exactly like I’m asking for a rematch of his fight with Maia.

Both Thiago Alves and Anthony Johnson should greatly consider going to 185. I honestly believe that they would do well at that weight, and they wouldn’t be small for that weight class.

by chrisbboy82 on Aug 8, 2010 4:48 AM EDT up reply actions

Johnson yes

Alves no

Thiago is already kind of short for a WW. He would look like a dwarf at MW. What he needs to do is give up some of that muscle mass. He can walk into the cage at 190 and still be bigger than 95% of the guys in the division. There is no reason for him to carry around nearly 200 pounds with his frame.

Do you guys think Anderson is showing signs of aging or was he just off because of his injury? For Chael Sonnen to hit him like he did was pretty crazy.

Maybe he was just worried about the takedown so much that he didn’t try as hard to avoid Chaels striking. Never seen him hit like that before.

by Tats16 on Aug 8, 2010 2:02 AM EDT reply actions

I think he underestimated Chael. Chael started engaging right out the gate, when Silva notoriously likes to get about a minute to feel out the opponent. That blitz caught him.

the blitz didn’t work out too well for Forrest though

by ecost on Aug 8, 2010 2:05 AM EDT up reply actions

I would’t say Forrest blitzed him. Also, Forrest stood right in front of him and kind of walked towards him, Anderson never looked uncomfortable. Chael stayed low, hands up, went after him.

by sBruce24 on Aug 8, 2010 2:34 AM EDT up reply actions

I disagree about underestimating. I think Anderson knew exactly what he was getting himself into, which is why he issued a press release with the reasons why he shouldn’t have to fight Chael. Anderson will never have an answer for Chael’s takedowns; at 35-years-old, it’s too late for Anderson to learn enough wrestling to stop Chael. BJJ is another story.

by JTho on Aug 8, 2010 2:07 AM EDT up reply actions

my take?

fuck the injury talk, Anderson came out throwing leather from the start instead of trying to pace himself as he usually does and find the correct distance (thanks media+DW and fans). That’s my only answer for Chael being able to clip him in the first round like he did. But after watching the whole fight I don’t think it would have mattered anyway, Chael would have still taken him down most times and the fight would have played out much in the same manner. Anderson needs to train some wrasslin with Brock.

Hmmm, more evidence that Silva was carrying Sonnen for 4 rounds

Sonnen even admits that he did not feel like he was getting the best Anderson had to offer, and even thinks he feels kinda soft(like you do when you spar/roll in the gym). Meanwhile Anderson mentions that out of respect to Noguiera he made sure to win by submission(because of the black belt in a happy meal comment).

by SimplePsych on Aug 8, 2010 4:21 AM EDT reply actions

i don't think so.

he didn’t look like he was trying to win by submission when he was trying to knock him out at the beginning of each round. he may have decided to win by submission when chael repeatedly put him on his back and kept him there. but he had nothing else he could do there.

At USC we're not snobs, we're just better than you.

by TrojanCBB on Aug 8, 2010 5:05 AM EDT up reply actions

he wasn't getting the sub nor looking good at the bottom

his corner told him to just go for the KO after the third round, because he was losing on points. He did come out with a kimono with the BB, he’s never done that before, so I’m sure he wanted to win by sub from the beginning.

the following two things are signs of weaknesses:
stay silent when it's needed to speak up, and speak up when it's needed to stay silent.

That because he did not try for the sub until the 5th round

He carried him, he played softball for 4 rounds then dropped the hammer. Everyone at the Arena could see it.

WHY?

Immediate rematch possibly for Sonnen? Is this going to start a trend, oh you lost, ok, we’ll give you a rematch, forget the rest of the people waiting to take on the champ. There was nothing controversial, nothing to talk about but the fact that it was a great fight. Sonnen lost, next in line.

by proflex on Aug 8, 2010 8:56 AM EDT reply actions   1 recs

There certainly was something to talk about. Chael Sonnen was 2 minutes away from winning a 50-42 decision by one judges card before being submitted. Yes, he lost, but he dominated Silva when the man has never even been challenged in the UFC.

by Charger567 on Aug 8, 2010 10:47 AM EDT up reply actions

I'm not gonna sit

here and attempt to make excuses, if Silvas “rib injury” was as bad as he said, then there is your reason for the domination. A rematch will end no differently, just quicker. Here’s what everyone seems to be missing, ok, Silva got “owned” for the whole fight, but Chael dished out everything he had, and couldn’t finish. And thats what Silva did, finish the fight. If I want to watch immediate rematches all the time, which IS starting to look like a disturbing trend in the UFC right now, I’ll go back to watching the WWE. Seriously, are we gonna give Carwin a rematch because he tooled Lesnar for the entire first round and then lost in the second? Where do we draw the line?

by proflex on Aug 8, 2010 10:58 AM EDT up reply actions

Please go back to watching WWE then. If your into that fake ass crap go back to it.

I'm gonna give you three seconds; exactly three-fucking-seconds to wipe that stupid looking grin off your face or I will gouge out your eyeballs and skull-fuck you!

reread

my comment, then reread yours, I never said anything about fake, anywhere.

by proflex on Aug 8, 2010 11:36 AM EDT up reply actions

You said you’ll go back to watching WWE and I was implying that WWE is fake. Or do you think its real?

OMG

If you couldn’t see that I was implying that the WWE does rematches all the time, then I don’t know what to tell you. I know it’s fake, I also know your first response made no sense, you could have said the sky is blue and I like Snicker bars, and it would have made as much sense.

by proflex on Aug 8, 2010 2:22 PM EDT up reply actions

I had no idea that WWE does rematches because I don’t watch the shit. So no I didn’t see that you were implying that. Go take some Midol.

I think your argument fails to acknowledge that there isn’t really any legit options for Silva to defend his belt against. Belfort hasn’t really earned it, he was only stuck in line because everyone thought Silva would walk through Sonnen and need another challenger.

However, on the other side, given Silva’s history, I think he does everything he can to avoid a rematch with Sonnen.

by Axl_Pabst on Aug 8, 2010 11:27 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree

I don’t mention anything about the lack of competition for Silva, but a rematch isn’t warranted right now. I want one question answered though before people go on and brand Sonnen the second greatest thing since sliced bread. Have any of you ever had rib injuries? If not, then it’s hard for you to honestly sit there and say that Sonnen owned Silva and deserves an immediate rematch. I for one give Silva all the credit in the world for performing with one. Unless you’ve had one, you have no idea how much it affects every aspect of anything you do.

by proflex on Aug 8, 2010 11:41 AM EDT up reply actions

I've had one

I was wrestling in high school. A fat kid got on top of me, I hear a “pop” and my rib started hurting. The doctor told me it was a bad bruise, and recommended not wrestling for a while. It hurt a good bit, but it wasn’t the worst injury that I ever had while wrestling (rolling my ankle defending a single made grappling WAY harder.)

by Captain7 on Aug 8, 2010 1:06 PM EDT up reply actions

We don’t know how bad it was, I’ve “popped” a rib before and it brought me to my knees, and I was useless for over two weeks. With that kind of injury, it affects everything because of where it is. I hear you on ankle injuries though, they suck too.

by proflex on Aug 8, 2010 2:26 PM EDT up reply actions

I’ve had rib injuries before and yes they do suck. And if Anderson really had a bad one I’ve give him credit for stepping up. But he did chose to fight so he can’t make excuses. Anyway if you like Anderson so much and he did have a rib injury then a rematch is perfect because it gives him the opportunity to prove that the rib injury is why he fought like he did and maybe he could come wreck Chael.

by attgnp on Aug 8, 2010 2:15 PM EDT up reply actions

So

because Anderson had the rib injury there should be a rematch? Where are you basing your logic. Did he not win? Yes or no. Did he not win with an injury? Yes or no. I could care less how close the fight was, if thats what is going to determine rematches, then Carwin gets an automatic one right now. Will he, no.

by proflex on Aug 8, 2010 2:24 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m not saying because he had a rib injury that the rematch should happen, I’m saying the rematch should happen because he got his ass beat 95% of the fight. Yes he did win and he says he had an injury, but like others have said that camp almost always has an excuse for a shitty performance.
Carwin dominated Brock for ONE round then gassed got taken down and subbed early in the 2nd round. Chael dominated Anderson for 23 minutes or 4.5 rounds then walked into a sub. So I’d say 5 minutes of domination is a whole differnt story than 23 minutes of domination, especially since Anderson to that point had only lost like 1 round in his entire UFC career.

I was very impressed with Fitch

he stood, exchanged and got the better of it most of the time.
And Thiago improved his ground game and got out twice …

beautiful match

FEDOR is the best because of the way he wins and the that he is not playing it safe and that is why he is better than Silva or GSP

Underrated Match.

Not your normal Fitch snoozer.

Chael is the man

After watching the post fight interviews, I think I’m a Chael Sonnen fan (but I’ve always likd Silva).

My favorite part

is the look on Matt Hughes’ face the entire time.

Sonnen: My heart is broken.

Hughes: shit eating grin

LOL

Agreed, sometimes Hughes dickness is quite entertaining.
