Jon Fitch on MMA Nation: "I Don't Think Anyone Can Beat Cain Velasquez"
It was a busy Sunday on August 1st with the return of Jon "Bones" Jones to Versus, but the MMA Nation train rolled on. We spoke to top UFC welterweight contender Jon Fitch as he prepares for one of the most important fights of his career, i.e. the rematch with Thaigo Alves at UFC 117.
Fitch had a lot of positive things to say about Alves, noting the American Top Team's mental durability has improved leaps and bounds since his entrance to the UFC at such an early age. We also delved into other topics, most notably how his AKA teammate Cain Velasquez will fare against Brock Lesnar, how Fitch has improved since his loss to Georges St. Pierre and how much more seriously his other AKA teammate Josh Koscheck takes wrestling as a part of his daily training.
Notable excerpts below. Entire audio of the interview available here:
Jon Fitch on Chael Sonnen's pre-fight antics:
It is what it is. It's not something I would do. But if he feels that's what he needs to do to help sell the fight, that's fine. It's pretty entertaining. He's a smart guy. He can easily make you feel foolish in a short period of time given the chance. But that is just not my style, that's not my character. I prefer to let my fighting speak for itself. I'm involved in this sport more for the challenge and competition of it, not putting on a show. It's a little more pro wrestling than I like. It placates to fair-weather fans more than real fans. Just focusing on entrainment solely doesn't lend to building a strong fan base very well. If the sport were built purely on entertainment it would never survive.
Fitch on how much Josh Koscheck has improved since the first time he fought Georges St. Pierre:
He has improved by leaps and bounds just for the simple fact that when they first fought he wasn't doing any wrestling. He had it in his head that no one was a better wrestler than him and no one would be able to take him down. He didn't train in wrestling for that fight at all. That's changed a great deal. In the past year or two we've focused on wrestling a great deal. That's gonna be a huge factor. It was a concern that we all had. It took a couple losses for him to realize that he still had to work on wrestling. As far as straight wrestling, he's the best in the division. As far as MMA wrestling, he and Georges St. Pierre are at the top.
Fitch on what type of improvements he sees in Thiago Alves since the first time they fought:
The thing that most people don't notice is the mental game. He's a lot tougher mentally. He was just a puppy the first time we fought. He was mentally weak. Through the years and the experience he's gained, he's a much stronger fighter now. But it doesn't concern me. I get excited for challenges. It's something I look forward to. It appeals to me because you are only as good the people you beat.
Fitch on Cain Velasquez and his chances of defeating Brock Lesnar:
I don't think there is anyone that can beat him. He's unlike anyone I've ever seen. He can take the fight in so many directions. He's got great stand up and great wrestling. The only thing that's lacking a bit is his jiu-jitsu, but that's because it's hard to find guys that are 240 pounds and are good to roll with. His submission defense is outstanding though. There are a lot of big guys in our gym he can train with to help prepare for Brock too. Bobby Lashley, Mark Ellis, and Daniel Cormier. And during training we are always putting him in bad positions to make sure he gets the most out of his workouts. He's definitely ready.
Fitch on whether he believes he is prepared to once again challenge for the welterweight title:
Absolutely. I think I've been ready for a while. Now it's just about staying where I'm at and defeating the challengers that come along until I get my shot to become a champion.
Fitch on how he has changed since his fight against Georges St. Pierre:
A lot has changed for me. My striking is just a lot more sharp and technical. The thing that hurt me in the fight with GSP is I threw a lazy leg kick and caught an overhand right and I was on queer street the rest of the fight. It was all down hill from there. I've worked a lot on my Muay Thai. My head movement and foot movement has dramatically improved. I'm a much faster and better athlete now. My diet has changed too. I'm a lot leaner and in better shape now.
Fitch on how he views Georges St. Pierre's recent conservative approach to fighting:
I think a lot of people had it in their heads that he has a weak chin because of the Matt Serra fight and that he is using his wrestling more now because of that. But he's always been wrestling-based. He uses his wrestling to set up his striking. He's fought some good strikers recently, so why play into their strength? It's all about the path of least resistance. It'd be moronic to just stand trade with guys like Thiago Alves and Dan Hardy.

I am not a Lesnar fan
but i would love to see what this guy, Mike Swick and Josh Thompson will say if Lesnar somehow smashes Cain. I mean it’s not like Cain is 200 times better than Lesnar in all areas of the game.

That's hilarious Fitch
Brock’s going to smash Cain senseless.
Nick Garcia is the Brian Russell of MLS but 10 times worse.
Other than heavier hands, more power, and gigantic arms that would crush him....
Yeah I’d say Brock doesn’t have anything on Cain.
Nick Garcia is the Brian Russell of MLS but 10 times worse.
sig bet?

Sure. But not 2 months from the actual fight. ;-)
Check back during event week.

fair enough.

LOL at
“Heavier hands, more power, gigantic crushing arms”
You do realize that you just said the same exact thing 3 times? That’s like saying "Cain has better technical boxing, crisper hands, and superior puguilistic capabilities.
At any rate, it should be a good fight. I’d say that they’re about even in the wrestling department, and so if it does become a primarily standup affair, it’ll be interesting to see if Velasquez’ more varied striking attack can best Lesnar’s extendo- arms and killshot power. I’m pumped, leaning towards Cain

Not really...
Heavier hands = Knock out power
More Power = Overall strength in both wrestling/stand up exchanges
Gigantic crushing arms = Reach and ability to do some things on the ground that would usually require either A: A lot more effort or B: Borderline impossible with shorter arms.
They are related, but they definitely aren’t the same.

Since the result is a foregone conclusion, you can get rich betting on Brock — I think he’s at -170. I’m guessing you have brock at -10000.

If Brock can find people to roll with Cain can.

I actually found that kind of funny but for a different reason. Cain won the blue belt no gi world championships something like 17 months after he started rolling. Since he hasn’t won the ADCC’s yet, I guess his BJJ constitutes a “weakness”, at least it does when you have all of the experts convinced that you’re the best HW in the world.

Cain was getting tagged by Kongo relentlessly, his defence is fairly poor.
I’d like to see Cain take Brock down as a strategy, sort of like what Jones did to Matyushenko, but I think Cain will stand and bang with Brock and probably get KTFO.
You can KTFO someone on the ground too…

Cain is a better wrestler than Brock.
the only reason Cain wasn’t a NCAA champ was because of Cole Konrad, the immovable wall. When it comes to MMA wrestling Cain is the best at HW by a lot.

I don't remember
I’ve been drinking wine for 4 hours. Ask me when I’m sober.
There are only two fighters in the world who might be able to defeat Jon Jones: Ken and Ryu.
..based on examining their performances and skills?
"Your not gonna jab and shoulder roll your way away from Brock Lesnar; He is gonna fuck you." - Joe 'High as Fuck' Rogan
No
His ability for control.
He’s like a snake that never let’s go, the most important part of wrestling isn’t takedowns.
Compare the way Brock controlled Heath Herring to the way Cain controlled Rothwell and then tell me who has the better wrestling for MMA.
I think the answer is obvious ;)
I apologize for my never-ending assault on the English Language. I feel like Qui the promoter from Jade Empire...
Controlling Ben Rothwell makes you the best heavyweight wrestler by a lot?
Gilbert Yvel did a tolerable job wrestling Ben Rothwell. Cain was a great collegiate wrestler, but I don’t think he’s shown ANYTHING in mma to say that he’s the best heavyweight wrestler by “a lot.” Could he be the best? Sure. But even then, I guarantee it isn’t by a lot.
based on overall talent.
like I said the only reason Cain wasn’t NCAA champ was because of Cole Conrad. Cole beat Cain on points, he never got a legit takedown on him if i recall correctly. Cole’s style of wrestling is to be a 280 pound wall and not allow any one to take you down. Cain was the best Agressive wrestler of his time in college.
"Your not gonna jab and shoulder roll your way away from Brock Lesnar; He is gonna fuck you." - Joe 'High as Fuck' Rogan
He still keeps
that aggressiveness which sets him apart in the HW Division.
Kole is still one of the strangest and most effective wrestlers I’ve seen 0.o
I apologize for my never-ending assault on the English Language. I feel like Qui the promoter from Jade Empire...
Agreed, when I heard that Cain was going to try out MMA I was ecstatic
His wrestling transitions SO well to MMA.
"Your not gonna jab and shoulder roll your way away from Brock Lesnar; He is gonna fuck you." - Joe 'High as Fuck' Rogan
The only reason? Really? Then why did Cain never finish 2nd? He never beat Mocco at Ncaas either, and was dominated by Greg Wagner two years in a row. You may want to check some facts.
by Hardcharger on Aug 5, 2010 9:30 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
that was years ago
he ktfo’d nogueira who has pretty good striking
i still see brock winning this, a few takedowns some ground and pound and finally winning via tko or submission (that arm triangle could become a signature move for brock) in the 2nd
We have a saying back home that if your coming on, COME ON!!!!
Your definition of "years ago" is less than 14 months?
Nick Garcia is the Brian Russell of MLS but 10 times worse.
correction
that fight feels like years ago
We have a saying back home that if your coming on, COME ON!!!!
This is the answer. Cain KOs the burnt toast remains of what was once Minotauro and suddenly hes a monster. This is the same guy who couldnt stand with Kongo, and this is being completely literal, for more then 15-20 seconds without getting his head smashed into the 37th row. This is also the same Cain who beat on Kongo point blank from top control for 15 minutes and left Kongo looking like he had just been for a brisk jog. He has nothing for Brock besides a Sherk-style “keep-your-hands-busy-so-the-ref-doesnt-stand-this-up” top control special. Could he hold Brock down for 5 rounds throwing those non-damaging arm punches of his? Sure. Is it likely? Mmmmmmm……….no.

I seem to remember a guy who tooled Big Nog on the feet and everyone built up a the man to beat Lesnar
His name was Francisco Mir.
Called it before the fight:
Cardio - The BIG question. Does Shane Carwin have cardio? He's never gone past the first round. His muscle mass is astounding and we all know that with all that muscle comes a need for the heart to pump fresh oxygenated blood to keep them from building lactic acid. He does train up in the thin air of Colorado, so that can't do anything but help. However, we have seen him pretty winded after a 1st round fight. Adrenaline dump or cardio problems? We won't find out the answer to that until someone takes him out of the first round.

thats wierd
Cause I actually remember some guy named Mir as having a submission win over Brock. Funny how that works

I feel you’re really overestimating Brock’s standup here.
He has about two combinations he throws and they should be setting up for the takedown. Did you watch his fights against Mir or Shane? Whenever someone pressures him on the standup he has that really bad habit of backing up, Cain’s abilities play right into that weakness.
Kongo’s striking>>>>>>>>>>>>>Brock’s striking
Mark my words, if Cain gets a single leg takedown in the first minute of the first round Brock will be TKO’d in the third.
I apologize for my never-ending assault on the English Language. I feel like Qui the promoter from Jade Empire...
What makes you think that a guy...
Who had the nickname Pillowhands before his fight with Nog due to his amazing ability to land shots at will, yet not finish people, is going to TKO a guy who took a full on blast from Carwin and didn’t get his lights turned off. It’s safe to say they are going to be no quicker stopping this fight than they were the last one, so I’m just failing to see what about Cain’s game makes you think a TKO is likely.

Such a stupid thought
Five names already come to my mind, JDS, Fedor, Nelson, Overeem and Werdum (this case with some luck and opportunism like in the Fedor fight)
A teammate having faith in his training partner.
You’re right, what a moron :/

I did’n’t say he was a moron, just the comment is a stupid to me, there is a lot of hype around Cain
A reporter asks him a question about his teammate and he answers it like a teammate would and it’s stupid? I’d say your comment is stupid.

I just like Brock better. If Lesnar can avoid getting his legs battered with kicks, then this is his fight all the way.

I think Cain will beat Brock
I only think another young incredibly relentless fighter like JDS could batter him.
I really think his speed and endless cardio will be the key to this fight along with his (IMO) better MMA wrestling than Brock.
I apologize for my never-ending assault on the English Language. I feel like Qui the promoter from Jade Empire...
Cain wrestling mma or not isn’t better than Brock, add that to the fact that he’s bigger stronger and as we learned can take big shots equals a bad night for Velasquez.

It's his teammate so he has to say it but. . .

Wow
A lot of people are saying things like that about Velasquez. Is he really that good? I thought only Jon Jones was that good. Maybe Jones should get the loser of Cain-Brock.
And how do you trade the Dow at 1,000?
One suggestion from Faber is buying a self-sustainable farm in the middle of nowhere surrounded by high voltage fences and barbed wire and equipped with booby traps and an arsenal of machine guns, hand grenades and armed vehicles guarded by vicious Dobermans.
Jon Jones would demolish Brock
Based on Jones’ explosiveness.
Nick Garcia is the Brian Russell of MLS but 10 times worse.
Okay don’t get me wrong I think Jones is a f-ing monster, but saying he would demolish Brock is a bit of a stretch. He hasn’t even faced any top 10 competition yet. Not to mention Brock is MUCH bigger than him.
I'm gonna give you three seconds; exactly three-fucking-seconds to wipe that stupid looking grin off your face or I will gouge out your eyeballs and skull-fuck you!
Ummmm yeah I'm just making light of the Jones hype
Brock would probably snap him like a twig but you never know.

Win or lose against Lesnar
Jones – Cain would be an outstanding fight, right up there with Rua – Anderson

Big fan of Fitch
And I have to say, what he said about the GSP fight was true – he got smashed with that HUGE overhand and never recovered. I hope his striking has improved like he says, I’m stoked to see him fight Alves and not another lesser name opponent. Dude is #2 in the world for a reason.
Get rid of the ramp!
ROFL what have you seen over the past few fights would make you think Fitch’s striking is anything more then gawd-awful? Considering he hasnt even come in the zip code of a finish in 4 years and counting?
God awful?
Hes dominated everyone hes fought since the loss to gsp. The only time he was in trouble was when at the very end of the third round of the pierce fight he got caught by a few shots.
Fitch always seems like such a cool dude
I always hope he wins, but I rarely enjoy myself.
"I am a man who pisses largely and frequently, which they say is a sign of great mental activity" -Henry Miller-
I like Jon Fitch. I’m not usually a fan of wrestlegrinders, but for some reason I like him.
I think he’s an optimist to say that Lesnar has nothing for Cain. Lesnar is a handful for anyone just based on size and athleticism, and his skills are nothing to scoff at. On the other hand, given that Cain is in training for that fight in the same camp, he pretty much has to say that.
I consider myself a softcore fan.
