Quotes From Countdown to UFC 117: Anderson Silva, Matt Hughes and Roy Nelson

Anderson Silva - "Chael Sonnen has talked more trash than anybody I've ever faced."

"He talks like a champion but in the Octagon we'll find out quickly if he can fight like one."

"As the fight get's closer, this is going to become more of a whirlwind. And all this trash talking is going to cause a fiasco in his mind."

"He's saying that I'm a fake and liar, well you know what, when we're inside the Octagon, he's going to have to back up all these things he's saying about me."
Matt Hughes - "I'm not worried about [Ricardo Almeida] his submissions. He's tricky on the ground, there's no doubt about that. But I think my wrestling is really going to pay off."

"I think I can put him in bad situations where he gets tired on his feet and hopefully I can put him in some bad situations to where he has to panic a little bit."
Roy Nelson - "I just feel privileged they are throwing me with the lions and you know what, I don't think nobody wants to fight him [Junior dos Santos]."

"I want to hold you down and put you in a crucifix and pinch your nose and go "Honk, Honk". I can do whatever I want, that's the difference [in the fight against Kimbo Slice]."

"It's really not like, are you the better striker?, are you the better grappler?, Who really cares. At the end of the day, it's are you the better fighter? And if you're going to fight for the belt you better have every part of the arsenal. ... Junior [dos Santos] is going to go, I'll never fight Roy Nelson again."

To be fair, Anderson; Chael Sonnen has talked more trash than anyone has ever faced.

For some reason, this makes me think of Mark Munoz. I’ve never seen such a decorated wrestler fail to make the transition to “mma wrestling” so bad.

I’m sure there are some, but I can’t think of any…

Good call. I’m still relatively new to the sport (I know, I know – TUF noob), and I’m pretty familiar with the history, but I still sometimes overlook the older guys. Though in this case, I’m sure they wouldn’t mind being overlooked.

Randleman is basically a black Mark Coleman. They both were monster’s in their prime but the sport just surpassed them. They both had vicious double legs but that only won for them up to a point.

Yah, but his most relevent success was in his Pride career (but then he just went from win streak to losing streak). He was too hit or miss in the UFC.

Word. Randlman did have an amazing double leg, but he was never quite as successful as anyone else on his team back when Hammer House was the bees knees. And he’s never been able to consistently win at the top level, even when he was in his prime.

I can't think of any either.

His take downs attempts look like the attempts that a desperate BJJ players make in the late rounds after being outclassed on the feet for most of the fight.

I am so glad Sonnen wasn’t quoted there. I have heard enough. Anderson is right.

I’m not a Chael hater or anything, but I definately hope he lights a fire under Andy’s ass. He’s one of the fighters that got me into the sport, but unfortunately, one of the first PPVs I actually purchased was Silva/Cote…

At any rate, I think Anderson’s had some of the best lines recently. Case in point:

Only barely on topic, but pertinent to UFC 117 stuff: Tweet from an MMA website

Thiago Alves will not be at today’s open workouts. He’s reportedly having trouble cutting weight.

That's been my problem with Alves.

He ALWAYS has a problem with his conditioning!

I said that on another thread and people “poo-poo’d” that idea.

by ChicagoMarine on Aug 4, 2010 4:43 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think it's his conditioning

Dude is just so huge for a welterweight that he needs to drop massive amounts of weight before a fight which is no easy task.

by dreamers_12345 on Aug 4, 2010 5:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Conditioning in terms of weight control.

At UFC 66 he tested positive for diuretics and had to fight catchweight in UFC 85.

I love his fighting and think he has top 3 leg kicks in MMA, but it always seems like weight control is an issue.

His conditioning held up fine in the GSP fight and GSP was using him as a grappling dummy for most the fight (which is exhausting). I don’t think I’ve ever seen him look tired, although he may, like everyone, slow a bit in the later rounds.

I believe Roy Nelson when he says:

Maybe it’s that meatball sub I had for lunch…

… But, I’m starting to believe that Nelson will win this match on Saturday.

I'm a Big Country fan, and if he can take JDS into the later rounds, he might have a shot.

However, I’m going to go with JDS for both Wager and Pick on mmaplayground.

I’d be happy to lose both if Big Country can get the win!

Matt Hughes fight might be more about ground defense, than actual submissions or G&P.

I can’t see this one being a finish. 3 rounds and whoever has the most control throughout the fight.

I got Hughes in that one though.

It’s easy not to like him. If he didn’t have his dorky sense of humor, he’d be the perfect heel. Fat. Ugly. Cocky. Sounds like money to me.

And no, I’m not hating on his sense of humor. I’m pretty dorky to, but I’m not cocky enough to pull it off.

I would just like to add...

That in this countdown they had some dramatic “world traveler” story behind JDS’s nickname “Cigano”. However, in the last UFC countdown he was in, they said that he got the nickname in the gym for his long hair and resemblance to a Soap Opera star.
