Brendan Schaub, Former Jason Genet Client, Signs With MC Hammer's Alchemy
Some interesting tweets last night:
MCHammer MMA News !!! We are proud to announce Brendan Schaub has signed with Alchemist Mgmt. Welcome Brendan, glad to have you.
Luke Thomas replied:
MMANation It appears Jason Genet lost Brendan Schaub to Alchemist MMA. Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy. Good luck with the SEC, Jason.
We've covered Genet's problems with the SEC here and here.
This is a trend we will see increasingly in the future as the old line of small time MMA operators are pushed aside in favor of more connected players. While MC Hammer and his partners (including Ed McMahon's step-son) are not A-list like Georges St Pierre's Creative Artists Agency, they are a considerable step up from penny stock land.
Hammer once managed Evander Holyfield to a heavyweight title, if Schaub keeps developing like he has been recently, it's not inconceivable that he could be Hammer's first MMA heavyweight champ.
UPDATE: Shane Carwin responds:
Bloodyelbow.com is a great example of what not to do. They are a cut an paste site with no real journalism. That site is anti MMA
@CapsFanJon they lack integrity and make stuff up as it goes along hoping for clicks and ignorant fans to buy into the BS from BE.
@TxDogoArgentino How can you support a site that writes stories without fact checking any of the topics? They bash fighters and profit. scum
Thanks Shane! We'd have loved to check with Jason but since he refuses to communicate with us since lying to a BE reporter on email and then suddenly changing his tune when Zuffa read our post it makes it hard to fact check. But as of today Schaub is still listed as a client on Genet's web site.
UPDATE 2 from Genet's twitter
@Bloodyelbow FYI I do not represent Schaub. He was with Shambla not Magnetic. Our site is not up to date.
Always a treat to work with professional management that are helpful and responsive.
UPDATE 3 more from Shane:
@chaddukes Chad it does matter. They should be held accountable for reporting fact over fiction. They make money off my blood and sweat
@SethPoints you questioned my opinion not the other way around. @mmanation and the rest of cut and paste bandits can have you
@SethPoints you are welcome to your opinion, just is not right. you are a mma news fan not a fan of fighters
@UFCfan621 they make stuff up, cut and paste from other news sites, and never once fact check things with me when about me.
@Chimaican72 That really is not any of my business other then they are trying to make it mma related. They are scumbags
Guess Shane didn't like my Joe Stevenson post yesterday.
Update 4: Changed the headline. Should have done it hours earlier. My bad.

The more talent Hammer gets the better off MMA will be, imo.
ALL OF YOU LISTEN TO MEE, DON'T DISTURB HERE, I WILL CALL POLICE CATCH YOU, DON'T COME TO MY BANGOLOW HOUSE, UNDERSTAND, O.K. I HATE ALL OF YOU.
No way.
Hammer is a parasite, and he squandered all of the money he made from his music career. I’m sure Hammer will treat MMA with the same respect that he did hip hop music.

Cardio - The BIG question. Does Shane Carwin have cardio? He's never gone past the first round. His muscle mass is astounding and we all know that with all that muscle comes a need for the heart to pump fresh oxygenated blood to keep them from building lactic acid. He does train up in the thin air of Colorado, so that can't do anything but help. However, we have seen him pretty winded after a 1st round fight. Adrenaline dump or cardio problems? We won't find out the answer to that until someone takes him out of the first round.

The man is a parasite.
In the early 90’s my aunt was married to a guy in a group called DRS. The had a hit song called ‘gangsta lean’. Hammer was their manager. The group sold a million records and no one ever saw a dime.
About 10 years ago, hammer staged his first come back, as a christian rapper. This was right around the time Kirk Franklin and Creed was famous with their ‘Christian’ music. The man will anything for another sniff of fame and fortune. I can’t believe no one can see how slimy this guy is.

You do realize that DRS didn't sell a million albums right? Not even close.
Their single didn’t even go platinum IIRC. And they were dropped from the label.
Do you realize that most “one hit wonder” rappers don’t see a dime of their money? That has nothing to do with the manager. DRS had nothing close to the success of the single “Gangsta Lean”. Hell, they primarily got put on because of Hammer.
I’m not gonna say he’s squeaky clean, but a parasite? nah.

I just don’t like Hammer reptilian ass.
They actually made it to #34 on the billboard 200, staying there for 15 weeks.
- on R&B charts, 17 weeks on the chart.
They did pretty well and literally made NO money, not a dime. Ever.
Two of the guys went to jail and one died. My uncle’s still around. For some reason, they’re supposedly based out of Compton, but they were from Sac. I grew up around a bunch of guys from Black Market Records. Brotha Lynch, X rated, Big Crazy(is very much big and crazy). I knew DJ Darkness very well.

Hahahahahaha. Nothing.
They really didn’t do pretty well. The money in a new artist is in TOURING and shows. Now if they got bilked out of THAT money, you got a case. Sounds like they expected to make money hand over fist based on one hit song. Did they even have a followup hit?
They were probably billed as out of Compton because Gangsta Rap was REALLY starting to take off then. if they were three niggas from Sac town…hahaha, they would’ve gotten nowhere.

What part of 'I know there's no money'....
I know they weren’t world famous but making to #34 on billboard is huge for 4 broke dudes from Sac. Especially since they weren’t put together by some record exec. At that point in time, record sales were a lot higher than they are today. Anyone being heard was selling decent records.
They literally got no money whatsoever. They were advanced some money to make a record. They sold some records, but they had to pay Capital back for production costs, publishing, marketing, videos etc. Hammer took care of everything. No one ever saw a dime. Period. After paying the expenses, there was no money left. I understand that, but Hammer took his cut of the top and ditched them. Oddly enough, the album was well-reviewed by critics and was actually
I’ll talk to my uncle directly about this. He still works in the industry. The dude isn’t dumb. He never claimed they were owed a bunch of money, all he said was Hammer got his money and bailed and no one ever saw him or the money again.
Its actually pretty condescending of you to assume that I’m so naive or disillusioned as to believe they were superstars cheated out of a bunch of money. That and the fact that you don’t actually know any of the people involved and your just making up estimates based on recollection of a one hit wonder 17 years ago.
The reason they pretended to be from Compton in 1993 is pretty obvious. Its the same reason MC motherfucking Hammer is an MMA manager in 2010.
"I trained with Steven Seagal."

OK, let's try this
How much money do you think they should’ve received?
They got an advance. That’s standard in the industry. They had to pay it back on the back end. That’s standard. They didn’t tour (really) and the album didn’t sell. They worked for Capitol Records notorious for exploiting Black artists with shitty deal.
I may not “know anyone involved” but I know the biz. What you’re getting is an admittedly onesided second hand account. You said they didn’t get a dime, but said they got an advance. For most artists, unless they go platinum plus, the advance is all they see from the album.
You say “Hammer took his cut off top”, that’s standard for a manager/agent. In MMA, the agent gets his 10% BEFORE taxed, BEFORE expenses. That’s how it works.
The reason they pretended to be from Compton in 1993 is pretty obvious. Its the same reason MC motherfucking Hammer is an MMA manager in 2010.
I agree. Too make money.

He promotes the hell out of it and when naive people jump on in thinking they’ll get rich it drives the stock price up and he claims he was right. Then he sells off all the shares that he was compensated with to promote the stock.

Well for what it’s worth audience size should play a big factor into whether or not you think someone is a good blogger, but with that said, look over at middle easy, do they really ever have anything substantial written? Your judo chops and (as he calls them) copy/paste/commentary is endlessly more amusing

I wonder what that was all about
When some wild-eyed, eight-foot-tall maniac grabs your neck, taps the back of your favorite head up against the barroom wall, and he looks you crooked in the eye and he asks you if ya paid your dues, you just stare that big sucker right back in the eye, and you remember what ol' Jack Burton always says at a time like that: "Have ya paid your dues, Jack?" Carwin looks like a huge tool here. It seems like people quickly forget how blogging works. And BE has MUCH more content than stories they relay from other sites. Not only is there far more content, but the quality is excellent. Will they be spot on every time? No, and people have varying opinions, no need to get your man-panties in a bunch when someone thinks Dana wastes money playing cards, and you don’t agree.

If this was ONLY a C/P site, I’d still follow it because it’s nice to get news in one place instead of having to visit multiple sites. Instead, I get all of that plus some great articles and an amazing community discuss MMA.

Man, I’m starting to really dislike Carwin. What a little bitch. Here are some new tweets from him in the same vein:
- @UFCfan621 they make stuff up, cut and paste from other news sites, and never once fact check things with me when about me.
- @Chimaican72 That really is not any of my business other then they are trying to make it mma related. They are scumbags
@chaddukes Chad it does matter. They should be held accountable for reporting fact over fiction. They make money off my blood and sweat
@chaddukes yes see bjpenn.com for the answer. Fighters need to take the content back from BE types and empower themselves

I know you just got tweeted by the heaviest tweeter in MMA but just let him go
eventually as the first round goes on he will fire off so many tweets in rapid succession that the tweets will lose their power and impact. Just stay busy firing back with small posts and comments and if you cover up most of his tweets will just end up being arm tweets. Once the bell rings Marty Morgan will tell you " he is exhausted! You know what it’s like to be at your desk at your engineering job and throw that many tweets at a guy!"
Then after he has tweeted himself into exhaustion, take him out for the victory.

Seriously, Genet and Carwin basically lied their asses off in what started this whole BE/Carwin mess but for reasons that I’m not entirely privy to we’re not releasing the full details. NOW Carwin takes a shot at us for not “fact checking” when Genet admits that Schaub was still listed on their site because they haven’t kept it up to date. There should be no more simple “fact check” then going to the management site and seeing if a guy is listed, which he was.
Please feel free to note some times where we’ve spun quotes? We’ve posted exact damn words and had people claim they haven’t said things.

You know what?
Fuck Sh (Do to the rules of this site the person I’m referring to may or may not be affiliated with mixed martial arts)
I get more rec's than a Toyota!
For discussion's sake I'm going to come to Shane's defense.
Going back to the contract story, I can see why he went out of his way to attack BE. Sure the story was accurate. Sure he and everyone knows someone leaked the numbers from his camp. And I am positive they did so on purpose because they were not happy with the amount he was getting for the fight.
But after that came out it is very likely Zuffa read him the riot act. He knows where his bread is buttered. Is he going to tell Zuffa he’s pissed then watch them play hardball and keep him in limbo for a year until he finally gets a fight on a fight night undercard, where at age 38 he can hope to sign a new contract with Strikeforce? Or is he going to tell his Zuffa employers that it was that fucking BE’s fault? That BE made all this up to create a story (and by pure circumstance the whole story ended up being accurate- what are the odds!) and that Zuffa should be pissed at them and not poor, loyal Shane.
I’ll defend shane too but i’ll take the other side of the argument that says the story wasn’t accurate and sure as hell didn’t tell the entire story. And Carwin had every right to crap on BE for it, there seems to be alot of we know bettet but can’t tell you the real story. Sorry I don’t buy that you want to reports something you better make sure you can back it up 100% when you get called out on it. I hope this doesn’t go the same way as the Carwin contract story because that becomes a bad trend and damages this place big time.

People asked for it to be posted, they should have thought about the ramifications.
In other words, Shane and his manager used Snowden and BE to voice their discontent with how they were being treated by Zuffa, then when they got in trouble with Zuffa over it, Shane and his manager threw Snowden and BE under the bus in an attempt to save face.

Shane got mad when
1) Luke posted about his manager’s SEC trouble in the first place. Luke had called it “insider trading” when it was actually a “pump and dump”. Shane got mad, asked for correction. Luke changed the post.
2) Snowden did this post after corresponding with Carwin’s camp. Luke and I saw the emails.
3) Zuffa read the post and freaked out. Snowden wrote this post. Carwin and Genet shit all over Snowden as did many of our readers.
4) I did this post. Shane freaked. I changed headline from “blames ref” to “attributes”. Genet said none of his fighters would talk to BE in future.
6) Genet paid the SEC $2.3 million and admitted no wrong doing. Just an honest mix up folks. Nothing to see here.
I wrote this post. Genet got madder. Reiterated he and his camp won’t talk to us.
7) Hammer tweets that he signed Schaub. I check Genet’s site and see schaub listed as a client and an mma junkie post calling genet his manager and do this post.
8) shit storm ensues.

He does train up in the thin air of Colorado, so that can't do anything but help. However, we have seen him pretty winded after a 1st round fight. Adrenaline dump or cardio problems? We won't find out the answer to that until someone takes him out of the first round.

That's one part...
the other part was that info was reported here that Carwin and his manager claim was bullshit, however, as we’ve stated multiple times…we have the e-mail chain where the information was provided.
They’re maintaining that we report on things that are lies and don’t fact check…but…bullshit.

we were told Shane was going to make
$40,000 for UFC 116. It was actually $50,000.
He would’ve gotten another $50,000 had he won.
The main point was that he, unlike Brock, got no % of the PPV buys. This is accurate and has never been questioned.

Except that isn’t the whole story, Carwin wasn’t just going to make his contracted salary of 40k or 50k. He was getting taken care of just like other guys who’ve main evented big ppv’s in the past. So the fact that you or anyone reported that Shane was only going to make 40k or 50k was wrong on all counts.

The whole locker room bonus issue was mentioned and is well known, it also doesn’t have anything to do with the story as locker room bonuses are completely at the UFC’s discretion and are in no way guaranteed to be given. What Carwin’s manager told BE he would make when he asked that they write a story on it is the basis for the story not the fact that there are times that secret bonuses are given to fighters for big fights.
oh yeah i forgot about the whole magical locker room bonus

It shouldn’t be overlooked that the UFC does take care of certain guys but it’s still just a gift from Dana White for guys he wants to take care of and not actual income. I hope guys aren’t counting on getting random large checks in the back from the UFC because they aren’t guaranteed to happen.
but it’s still just a gift from Dana White for guys he wants to take care of and not actual income
Good luck trying to sell that idea to the IRS.
It is actual income, it’s just not predictable income.
Gifts of money are taxable too, heck that rate may be higher than the income tax rate. Of course for tax purposes it’s probably reported as income but outside of tax purposes it’s pretty obvious what it is. It’s money handed out on the whim of Dana White, it’s great that they do it but it shouldn’t be counted on no one knows if they will get it or not beforehand nor do they know how much he will give them until they are handed the check.
"So the fact that you or anyone reported that Shane was only going to make 40k or 50k was wrong on all counts."
Tell that to his people that told us that. They can’t show us the contract by law. We have to take his people’s word for it. If they lie – and they lied – we’re on the hook for it.
We’re the bad guys? Not on your life. I’m going to sleep just fine tonight.
Follow me on Twitter: @MMANation.
The thing is no one should have to tell you about that, it’s common knowledge that guys in high profile fights make much more than the contracted pay. Regardless of Nate’s sarcasm when it comes to bonuses which aren’t gift they are actually earned for helping the UFC put on shows. If and it’s a big if to me, Carwin’s management was willing to alienate the UFC because they were too stupid to know how much their guy was making Shane has bigger problems than I ever imagined because he’s got idiots representing him.

Let’s pretend this whole Carwin pay thing didn’t happen. How much do you think Carwin would have taken home in undisclosed bonuses for his performance? Half his show money? His show money? Double his show money? Well into six figures?
As long as the UFC keeps this stuff hidden, there’s no way for your or us or the media at large to comment on them. We can mention that the UFC claims they hand out extra money – and there’s nothing to the contrary, but we still have zero clue what’s being dished out (outside of the odd exception that gets leaked by Dana or one of the principals).

Is this a common occurrence?
The point is that we know nothing about these bonuses outside of what Zuffa lets slip through the cracks. If the UFC wants to keep this stuff secret, it should be no surprise to them when we completely ignore these mysterious bonuses when talking about fighter compensation. Dana can’t expect to say, “I take care of these guys, trust me,” and expect everyone to fall in line.

They aren’t earned or guaranteed they are given out at the whim of Dana White, it’s great that he does it but you can’t count on him doing it every time and if he doesn’t give it then you really can’t even get mad because it was never promised money for the fighters in the first place. These bonuses aren’t a system to reward fighters they are a whim of the boss who takes care of the guys he personally chooses to take care of.
Yes in this case Carwin’s managers stupid move to ask Snowden to write the article may of cost Carwin a bonus. If it pissed off Dana White then he isn’t going to write you a check and that doesn’t have anything at all to do with how he performed in the fight. Backroom bonuses are basically loyalty money, if you shut up and tow the line he’s going to take care of you and if you don’t then you will only make what is in your contract(if your lucky and they don’t just dump your ass).

I don't know if Carwin was "in" on it, however
His response blog was so perfectly crafted in terms of a) distancing himself from the report, b) complaining about his pay while not blatantly doing so, c) showing respect to his sponsor, d) showing respect to Mr. Dana White and e) endearing himself to fans, that leads me to think this was all part of a “plan”.
Get a report out there about his shitty pay, but make sure there’s enough incorrect info to have plausible deniability. Counteract that “incorrect report” with the “truth”, a perfectly crafted response, and paint the always hated MMA media as the “bad guys”.

this is another myth, these bonuses are a regular occurance it’s not on a whim and Shane could count on getting a big check since others in his position have gotten the same thing.
Back room bonuses have nothing to do with loyalty, the UFC isn’t contracted to pay anything more than it says on the contract. They routinely do, Why because they respect guys who go out and perform for them whether it’s selling a fight or going balls out.
People need to stop with the conspiracy bs and actually do some real fact checking. Because how in the hell can someone who has no inside sources know more about the backroom stuff going on with the UFC than so called mma reporters? that’s crazy.

Its hard to see things that way when the film portrays the best and brightest of your race as a bunch of lazy, drunken rapists. Mixed people, like myself, being the worst. Very minorly related tangent
I have been saying for over a year, maybe more, that the whole “undisclosed bonuses, we totally give our guys way more money than you know” stance was probably bullshit.
And everyone mocked me and yelled at me and told me I wasn’t pretty.
Now quite a few people seem to be coming around. I feel vindicated.
BOOSH
You shouldn’t because you and Nate and everyone else that keeps doubting the fact that Dana and the UFC hand out bonuses on a regular basis is wrong. The sad thing is people would rather mock and continue to believe their own stuff than actually do their homework which would show that people for the most part have no clue how much money these guys are making which is a lot more than it’s reported.

You just made the arguement against yourself.
You keep saying that guys are getting bonus money that we don’t know about. Well if we don’t know about it, then how the hell do you? How are we wrong? What homework have you done that shows that these guys are getting these phantom bonuses?
Forget it Donny, you're out of your element.
Cagesideseats.com
Do you really understand how dumb that statement is? Yes we know they give out bonuses and we even know from the Randy Couture trail statements that they don’t give out the same every time and they can’t be counted on to be given out at all. Some guys make more than their base and some guys probably make way more than their base but you can’t just say that across the board for everyone because these bonuses are given out at the whim of Dana White and not on some kind of set schedule of guaranteed money for fighters. I’m sure there are plenty of guys who don’t make a dime more than what is reported by the athletic commissions. It’s great that Dana gives out extra money but it’s blatantly obvious why he does it and that his favorites are going to get the big checks in the back as opposed to them being given for performance.
We may not know what these guys make but we have been given plenty of clues over time to how things do and don’t work behind the scenes.
F*ck Carwin.
I’m sick of him running his mouth when he isn’t even good at it. It’s more painful than when DeLaHoya tried to trash talk.
