Midnight Fights: Frank Shamrock vs Tito Ortiz UFC 22
Always nice to see this great fight getting its propers. MMA Weekly spoke to Shamrock about his greatest challenge in his MMA career:
"They all kind of stand out for different reasons. But I'd say my physical, the greatest physical application of martial arts I've ever applied, was against Tito Ortiz just because he was so big," Shamrock told MMAWeekly.com. "It took everything I had in my arsenal of martial arts skills to beat him.
"I've had other fights that... fighting Phil Baroni with a blown out knee was like the hardest mental thing I've ever done, but physically battling with Tito was just retardedly hard."
Cage Side Seats comments:
Frank Shamrock vs Tito Ortiz is widely considered one of the greatest fights in UFC history. It's sad that the UFC refuses to acknowledge it's significance due to petty issues with Shamrock. This fight was truly his biggest moment. Ortiz was coming off a couple of convincing wins over Shamrock's former teammates in Guy Mezger and Jerry Bohlander. Tito was much bigger than Frank and because of his massive size advantage was considered a favorite despite Shamrock holding the title.
During the fight, Ortiz repeatedly took Shamrock down and worked from inside his guard. Ortiz used his size advantage to score plenty with his strong wrestling and top control but by the 4th round he was starting to slow down. Most of the round was spent with Ortiz in Shamrock's guard after a takedown. With about a minute left in the round Shamrock reversed him and got back to his feet. After an exciting exchange that Shamrock was clearly getting the best of, Ortiz shot in for another takedown. Shamrock tried to lock on a guillotine but couldn't quite complete it. He stood up with Tito grabbing at his leg and delivered a few hammerfists to the side of Tito's head and Ortiz tapped with 10 seconds remaining in the round.
As I wrote in 2007:
Frank's glory years reached a fitting climax when he used his superior conditioning and ring generalship to wear out Tito. Tito had thrived on beating smaller opponents by getting the take down and then punishing them when they tried to fight to their feet. Frank refused to play that game. Frank conceded the takedown, went to guard and when Tito tired in the late rounds, Frank exploded to his feet and put the hurt on.
Frank was also winning the mental battle by trash talking Tito throughout the fight. While he held Tito inside his guard throughout the first three rounds Frank taunted and baited Tito with lines like "You better finish me quick boy" "Is that all you got?" "I heard you hit hard, you don't" "You're getting tired, Tito" "Hope you're having fun, I'm coming for you next round" etc etc.
It's really impossible to imagine this fight happening today, the best analogy I can come up with is to imagine Georges St Pierre fighting Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal in a five round fight and not only surviving, but coming back to win.
Watch it here. It's a little slow going in the early rounds, I'd watch the first round then fast forward to the third and fourth.

Incredible fight, one of my all time favorites.
For those with a short attention span who can’t sit through four rounds of one of the best UFC title fights of all time, here’s my highlight of the fight.

It really is a shame the UFC pretends it didn't happen.
I’m also really happy the rumored re-match didn’t happen.
Frank really did like to trash talk during fights.
ALL OF YOU LISTEN TO MEE, DON'T DISTURB HERE, I WILL CALL POLICE CATCH YOU, DON'T COME TO MY BANGOLOW HOUSE, UNDERSTAND, O.K. I HATE ALL OF YOU.
I swear I will transcribe the Shamrock interview this week….

It's a shame Shamrock became somewhat of a laughing stock
Especially commentating Strikeforce or for those braces that never seem to come off. For those who didn’t know MMA until after it’s dark ages, they are really being deprived of a true technical battle. The guy has had some real wars and deserves respect as a fighter and person no matter how awkward he comes off nowadays.
You know what's funny?
If that fight happened today I’m not sure anyone would label it as a classic. Think of how many people would shit talk it. They would trash talk Tito for “lay n pray” throughout the fight. In fact, I’ve heard quite a few people say that.
One of those fights that I wish I could have seen live.
Forget it Donny, you're out of your element.

Tito lay and pray’d. Shamrock is the one that made it exciting. His transitions on the ground and constant movement was sweet.

Yup. People would probably be totally nonplussed by that fight today. “Ahhh, Tito just layed on him the whole time. Wrestling sucks. I’m so tired of them just dry humping on the ground. And who taps out to strikes? It was so anti-climatic. I sat through all that lay and pray for that?”

Why does anyone care what those kind of people say. In my day we congregated in places like BE so we could avoid the kind of people who don’t love this fight!
by Jonathan Snowden on Aug 4, 2010 1:24 AM EDT up reply actions 1 recs
i saw it live and it was incredible
tito looked HUGE compared to frank…no one thought frank would survive, we all thought he was going to get pummeled because he was being taken down repeatedly. then tito couldn’t hold him down any longer and frank got up and delivered those massive hammer fists to tito’s head, the whole place erupted when tito tapped…
Its a fight that requires a ton of prespective to appreciate
Once the whole bad blood thing came out and I knew Shamrock was insulting him from the ground, and his strategy was to tire out Ortiz from the bottom is when I actually appreciated this fight for what its worth.

yeah it's alot like Couture vs Sylvia
a fight that was edge of your seat thrilling start to finish live but isn’t as fun to watch over and over again.

it will HAVE TO BE that kinda fight
if sonnen expects to win
and i believe he will
though i’m wrong alot
dan henderson has said over and over again he lost to anderson because he strayed away from his game plan. i’m sure it’s been drilled into sonnens head at team quest how important it is to stick to a particular game plan against anderson

yup
dan’s lethal right hand has been a double edged sword. it’s won him a lot of fights but also cost him a lot of fights since he can’t wrestle and head hunt at the same time.

exactly
for me the big x factor in the sonnen fight isn’t andersons striking
it’s andersons jits
i’ve said it before and i’ll say it again
if sonnen loses i see it being far more likely he’ll get submitted than it is that he’ll get knocked out

that's been his weakness
throughout his career. i’m amazed Marquardt didn’t work his guard game more before fighting Chael.

This is probably the only reason im happy Henderson/Silva 2 didnt happen
The confidence he would have in his right hand after that Bisping KO would have made that fight realllll ugly for Hendo

i agree
it was a glimpse into the chess game that mma would eventually become
a sport where the precise execution of a well thought out plan can prove to be just as important as size power or technique

stopping take downs and stopping
King Mo’s take downs are two different things. Mo is an elite class wrestler, far ahead of the average MMA wrestler.

Wow…just watched all of the Frank-Tito fight for the first time (only seen clips of it in Wamrage’s comback HL before). Frank’s cardio is astounding. Great fight.
I forgot about Frank being such a superior athlete. Thanks for this Nate

my pleasure man
in his hey day Frank was something awesome to behold. It’s one of the big bummers of MMA history that he basically retired at 27. We could’ve had Frank vs Sakuraba in 2000 or 2001 if Frank and PRIDE could have worked it out. : (

This fight to me was the first time martial arts became mixed martial arts, almost all the marquee fights before this just showed one discipline vs another, Frank showed that you can be well rounded at everything and beat someone with 1 great technical superiority.
I’d say a better comparison now instead of GSP/King Mo, would be Brock Lesnar vs Cain, if Cain survived his wrestling onslaught to the later rounds and then TKO’ed Brock.
It is a very similar stylistic matchup, the strong wrestler vs the faster guy that is more well rounded.
Great fight . . . I don't think so
I watched the UFC countdown of their 100 greatest fights, this one wasn’t even mentioned, not even top 100.
sarcasm
Actually it has nothing to do with Frank Shamrock
That’s 2010 revisionist history B.S.
It was Tito Ortiz the UFC was attempting to shun by omitting the fight from the countdown. At the time of the TV special Tito was a free agent publicly threatening to sign with anyone but UFC. Tito fights were only allowed on the top 100 countdown if Tito had lost the fight to a current UFC fighter in good graces.
huh?
that gets mentioned all the time; Namath, the guarantee, biggest upset in NFL history til the Giants knocked off the Patriots a few years ago…

I think you got my point
The NFL accepts it’s history and uses it as a key promotional tool. At the time the Jets embarrassed the NFL. Still the NFL knew it was a watershed moment for the sport and celebrated it.
no actually i don't
UFC erased most references of ortiz except his losses and all of shamrock in their great fights history.
NFL did the exact opposite and mentions Superbowl 3 frequently.

I haven't seen this fight yet but...
… Frank looks HUGE in that pic you have up there. I find it hard to picture Tito being bigger than him.
Frank had to stand on a box to do the face-off picture for the poster. Which was funny.
by Jonathan Snowden on Aug 4, 2010 10:05 AM EDT up reply actions
Frank most likely could have fought in the UFCs lightweight division at the time, which was the equivelent of today’s welterweight division. Tito would have been a decent UFC heavyweight at the time, since most of the best at the time weighted 215 – 230.
