Chael was right. If he can talk about his action figure in English why does he refuse to speak English to Joe after fights? He should interpret himself if he wont stop with the Portuguese.
Look at it this way. At least it isn't Rowdy Roddy Piper having success in the HW division.
thank you thank you thank you, yes, I love UFC, I love my fans, thank you thank you, yeah, I fight this, I fight my clone, I fight myself, thank you thank you.
you’re right, he can really communicate well in English… sure…
the following two things are signs of weaknesses:
stay silent when it's needed to speak up, and speak up when it's needed to stay silent.

wow
give him some credit. I thought he did an excellent job of understanding the interviewer as well as responding appropriately to each question.
MMA IS EVERYTHING!
he understands English just fine
the problem is his speech, it’s not enough to keep up with an eloquent conversation, that’s why he uses translators, there is no need to give him heat for choosing to use them IMO, it’s understandable why he does.

Who said he refuse to speak English to Joe?
Did you hear it before and then believed it? Or do you have a credible source?

There are some baseball players who use English as a second language that use their enterpreters a lot more then they have to, simply to avoid a PR disaster. Two good examples are Ichiro Suzuki and Vlad Guerrerro. It is well documented that both speak very, very good English (a lot better than say, Big Nog). But they both use their interpreters to simply avoid slipping up or having something lost in translation and then having everyone freak out. AS is smart for using his interpreter, even if he speaks perfect English (which is doubtful).

I can understand
I’m a native English speaker living in a German speaking country. I spend much of my time speaking English, even though some might say my German is “excellent”. For me, it’s all about not wanting to sound like an idiot. And I can especially understand it when you’ve just finished fighting (I have experience with this). The last thing you’re thinking about at that moment is how to speak a foreign language correctly. So I have no problem with Anderson speaking Portuguese much of the time, even though he appears to have a solid command of the English language.
