Quote of the Day: Paul "Semtex" Daley: "Dana (White) = UFC God"

Photo by Tracy Lee via Cage Writer

Dana = UFC God. He created his world (ZUFFA UFC) and he rules it with an iron rod..."His world" But not my world, I was still making money, fighting and winning before the UFC and i will carry on doing the same now im not with the UFC.

Haters keep talking about me, doing me the world of good.

Supporters, Thank you.

Didn't he pretty much shrug Dana off after the whole incident?

That was the report.

That Dana tried talking to him and he gave Dana the cold shoulder. So White said fuck you and that was that. Had he been cool about it with Dana this could have been a much different story.

Forget it Donny, you're out of your element.

It seems obvious to me that Daley wasn’t in the mood to have a normal conversation.

Fuck Dana

I remember him pulling that shit on TUF 1 with Bobby Southworth. Sometimes people don’t want to hear his bullshit. Bobby hasn’t been seen since.

He's a perfect example of the sometimes volatile people who hit people for a living

Daley is hardly rich or spoiled by athletic standards. He certainly isn’t equivocal to an NBA or MLB player being a diva with a guaranteed multimillion dollar contract.

What he is, is a guy with a quick fuse, who as the original commenter said probably wasn’t in a mental space to have a rational conversation at that moment. I’m not defending him, or criticizing Dana for doing what he had to do, but I think that as fight fans we should probably understand that many of the guys who hit other guys in the face for a living are wired differently than the rest of us.

Tatum: I think he's a good man. I like him. I got nothing against him, but I'm definitely gonna make orphans of his children.

True

But that vast majority of them seem to be able to get a handle on themselves after the final bell rings.

agreed

But post-fight shenanigans are hardly a new development in fight sports. Tempers are hot, adrenaline is flowing and — at the risk of sounding like Gus Johnson — shit does occasionally happen. That doesn’t make Paul too bright for continuing to poke sticks in Dana’s cage, but still.

by av1o3 on Aug 31, 2010 1:08 AM EDT up reply actions

To be honest, I think that if he would have come out after the fight and apologized at the press conference

And just said he let his emotions and frustrations get the best of him and that he would take whatever suspension/fine that was handed down to him he would probably still be in the UFC right now.

Instead he came up with some lame story about how he didn’t hear the bell and then gave Dana (the UFC God) White the cold shoulder and is now relegated to the B leagues for the rest of his MMA prime.

The saddest part is that despite losing to Kos he still could have been a huge star. He has the look and personality but he’s a fool if he thinks that he can achieve that outside of the UFC.

we each must become like fishermen, and go out on to the dark ocean of mind, and let your nets down into that sea

by Barack Lesnar on Aug 31, 2010 1:17 AM EDT reply actions

To add to that, he doesn’t even sound slightly sorry. I wonder how much of that is due to pride.

by X5-452 on Aug 31, 2010 1:24 AM EDT up reply actions

To be fair, he did apologize the next day, by which point he’d already been fired.

When it comes down to it, I think if you give it a year and Daley keeps winning, Dana White would take him back because while what he did was bad it wasn’t horrific or completely irredeemable. Daley is the second best WW that isn’t in the UFC, and has legit star potential. If he matures a bit, I think Dana would definitely take him back, even if he said he’d never do it (he said the same things about Tito Ortiz and BJ Penn). He’s not a PPV headliner but you could make money with the guy, and that’s what it boils down to.

That being said he still seems like a considerable prick.

by Chromium on Aug 31, 2010 1:35 AM EDT up reply actions

Not if he keeps running his mouth like in that comment. Daley has the maturity level of a 10 year old. He was an idiot before the sucker punch and he’s remained an idiot after it.

The quoted comment is even handed enough I guess...

But Daley is being an idiot for all of the reasons already stated. Had he apologized to Dana like he should have he could have worked his way back into the UFC. He may have been making good money prior to going into the UFC but the other orgs are going to suffer as the UFC gets bigger and before long there won’t be anywhere else to go.

by Polyhedron on Aug 31, 2010 1:33 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

That’s the way I see this, Daley was 100% in the wrong here and even now he’s still trying to redirect blame. He screwed up and he paid the price, the quicker he accepts that the betteer off it will be for him. It’s not Dana White’s fault that Daley isn’t in the UFC, if he hadn’t of been a jack ass after that fight he would still be there.

Daley has no chance to be a belt-holder in the UFC

Even if Dana forgives and forgets and brings Daley back, Daley has zero wrestling ability and would never be able to win a belt in the UFC. At best he could be a gate-keeper.

"You stick a microphone in a guy's face and he calls out anybody but the champion, and Joe Silva should fax him a pink slip right then." -- Chael Sonnen.

I can practically hear Dana now, “You know, he’s a young kid, he’s made some mistakes and I think he’s learned from them. He’s been on a tear lately and it’s my job to make the fights people want to see. He’s a good kid who made stupid decisions” or something to that effect.

by robotplague on Aug 31, 2010 1:52 AM EDT reply actions

While I basically agree with his statement and have my own problems with Dana and Zuffas unchecked power, the truth is that maybe Dana wouldn’t have used his vast power if Daley didn’t fucking punch a guy after the fight was over.

Admitting you’re wrong doesn’t mean you’re kissing ass. It means you’re being a man to own up to your mistakes. Not admitting you’re wrong when your boss calls you on it is being an idiot.

I should have clarified. I wasn’t thinking so much about the kissing ass part, as I was about the UFC WW division being entirely dominated by wrestlers, which I think is true.

What did Daley just win the Captain Obvious belt?

Yes. White is the president of the UFC and likes to control everything. It kinda comes with the territory when you’re striving to have a professional MMA organization. When you don’t act professional you don’t last long.

Isn't Daley in SF now?

Honestly he’s probably better off there. He has a clear path to the belt, with only Nick Diaz in his way, and will likely be making more money there as an immediate #1 contender, Hendo-lite style.

by Charger567 on Aug 31, 2010 11:26 AM EDT reply actions

ONLY Nick Diaz?
I hate the Diaz brothers. They are thugs and goons, but they are both excellent fighters. I would never use the term ‘just get through Nick Diaz’. that is a tall order. A tough fight for even GSP.

by mightyhokie on Aug 31, 2010 1:17 PM EDT up reply actions

The early reports that he’d signed with StrikeForce turned out to be false. I think he’s still in negotiations with them. His manager might be waiting until after the Shark Fights bout with Jorge Masvidal since if he knocks Masvidal out he’d probably get a slightly better deal. Or maybe StrikeForce wants to make sure he doesn’t lose first before shelling out whatever sort of cash Daley’s management is asking for.

You made a stupid, stupid mistake...

…and so you shouldn’t take it out on Dana White. You can’t be pissed at him because YOU lost your cool and hit another fighter WAAAAAAAAY after the bell. That was your screw up, son.

That being said, I hope that Dana goes back on his word eventually, if you prove that you have control of yourself. I would hate for the impulsive actions of a young man haunt him forever if no one was really hurt. In this case, Josh just laughed so no one was hurt. It was a dumb move, dude, but I hope you are not punished for it forever.
