Shine Still Under Fire From Failed "Worlds Collide" Event

Shine Still Under Fire From Failed "Worlds Collide" Event

May 15, 2010 held the promise of being one of the bigger nights for mixed martial arts in North Carolina. Shine Fight Promotions, LLC planned to put on "Worlds Collide" in Fayetteville, N.C. with a headlining bout that finally pitted a true boxer against a veteran MMA fighter. This made the event a true draw not only at the gate, but on pay-per-view as well. Ricardo Mayorga, a former World Boxing Association welterweight champion, was set to face UFC veteran and MMA ambassador, Din Thomas.

Star-divide

But the event never happened. Since then, the promotion has left a wake of unpaid debts across the state. Ranging from a venue left at the altar, a fill-in doctor who scrambled to arrive in time for the event, and a bevy of fighters not paid by the promotion. The event, or lack thereof, has shown the murkier side of fight promotions.

How much does Shine owe from the remnants of "Worlds Collide?" Because contracts are protected by confidentiality clauses, an exact figure is unknown. However, the total sum of the unpaid balance from the canceled show could be as high as $75,000.

A report by Fran Gilpin in the Fayetteville Observer last week stated that Crown Center, where the event was to be held, was owed approximately $42,000 in hotel, travel, and staffing costs. The report also states that Price has not returned messages to arena officials for several months.

After the original physician for the event backed out, a replacement had to be found. Michael Allen, agent for Roger Carroll and local promoter Kenny Letts (Fight Lab Promotions), assisted in arranging a last minute fill-in for the arena. N.C. Boxing Authority approved physician Dr. Joe Crill agreed to oversee the event for $1,000, including expenses. He arrived at the event, from Charlotte (130 miles), shortly before the cancellation. As of August 18, Dr. Crill had not been paid.

According to Terrance Merriweather, supervisor with the North Carolina Boxing Authority, contact was made with Price on June 6 requesting a total of $3,878.05. Of that amount, $1,200 constituted N.C. fighter Roger Carroll’s purse, while the remaining $2,678.05 was earmarked for the authority’s officials, such as referees and judges. Eventually, because of Shine’s lack of response, the state, and Carroll, were forced to file a claim against the insurance bond required to obtain a promoter’s license in North Carolina.

This really needs to be front paged.

In a related story, this and other Shine stories have been posted over on the Underground only to be deleted hours later.

Shine COO Jason Chambers is a moderator on the UG.

Coincidence?

I think not.

Agreed. This needs to be spread enough that everyone sees it. The way I see it, it is our responsibility as fans of the sport to make sure that the orgs that continually screw over fighters, aren’t supported.

I agree 100%. I was saying this about another organization a week ago but people will still find reasons or excuses for why they are still going to watch and support them.

In this case with Shine appearing to be hiding and dodging all their debts from the first show they deserve no support for their second show.

Just BE.

That is the third iteration of that thread.

The first one got deleted after Jason Chambers showed up, made some comments, and then must have thought better of it and deleted the whole thing. Fortunately, the guy who started the thread saw the deletion coming and had save his original post, so he created the thread again. That thread disappeared shortly thereafter as well. The thread you posted is the third (and hopefully final) version.

I can’t believe how little traffic this story is getting.

BElitists should be all over this topic. This is pretty damning stuff.

I agree...

…odd that they could burn so many bridges in NC and expect to rent a venue in VA.

On a related matter, it’s odd that American-based fighters are willing to fight for DREAM, given their traditional slowness of their check writing hand….

Luke Thomas is oddly silent on all this.

He’s been traveling the past couple days. I’m also not sure what you’re trying to insinuate.

Nothing sinister, I just figured he would have an opinion since the show is booked to happen in his backyard.

I really am surprised that we have seen about 20 articles debating BJ Penn’s legacy and not one article covering this update on Shine. I get that the UFC dominates the coverage here (and everywhere else), but there are still plenty of non-Zuffa articles on the front page (including one about Shine 4 bookings), yet there is nary a peep about this.

Yeah, I'm seriously wondering why any of the sites haven't put an article up yet.

My avatar has Bas Rutten and Terry Funk in it...therefore it's the manliest avatar on SB Nation.

They don’t have any content to promote on it. The story was told in detail by Yount, and that site is not part of the mainstream MMA blog circle jerk.

Thank you Smoogy.

I’m supposing that was a compliment. At least I took it as one.

I, myself, am also a little taken aback that other news outlets haven’t jumped all over the story. There have been a bunch of developments in the last week, All of which are damning to Shine, and may even shut the event down completely.

One place that did show a bunch of additional interest was Tapout radio. Crooklyn had Ron Foster on the other night, and Chambers backed out (but did a few small websites instead) and I will be on Monday night.

Check it out if you want to some things that couldn’t be printed.

As the world turns .....

Looks like Virgiania has shit canned them

They are in the process of finding a new location for the event.

There is new drama every day with these shysters.

Yeah most of the new rumors point to Oklahoma as the new home.
