UFC 118: Edgar vs Penn 2 Recap and Discussion on MMA Nation on 106.7 The Fan
Last night on MMA Nation on 106.7 The Fan, we recapped the entire UFC 118 event. Show podcast page here.
In segment one we opened the show with talk of Couture vs. Toney. Because there was more to chew on, callers were more interested in talking about the Edgar vs. Penn rematch. In fact, BE staff writer Jon Snowden called in to further elaborate on his controversial post about BJ Penn's MMA legacy:
Segment two callers wondered if the Couture vs. Toney bout was meant to showcase jiu-jitsu, what's next for the UFC lightweight division in terms of where fighters like George Sotiropoulos can go, whether or not there was some fan disappointment about UFC 118, what the status is of Shine's Patriot Center show, and what was so odd about BJ Penn's attitude at the event:
Segment three is our interview with Keith Jardine. This will be transcribed and published later in the week.
At the top of segment four we were joined by Nate to talk about this month's SBNation/USA Today MMA Rankings. We talked about UFC President Dana White slamming them at the UFC 118 presser, who dropped hard this month and who gained, what Penn's loss means for the lightweight rankings and what Okami vs. Belfort could do to the middlweight division picture. We also took callers who argued the drop on Penn's stock isn't warranted and if Frankie Edgar is the Dominick Cruz of the lightweight division:
Lastly, in segment 5, James Kimball and I broke down what happened with Kenny Florian, whether Edgar vs. Maynard 2 can sell PPVs and whether Dana White's statement that Florian chokes in the big fights is a correct assessment:
We are on Facebook, I'm on Twitter, James Kimball is on Twitter, Othello is on Twitter and the show's podcasts can all be found here. Email me here. Thanks for the support. SPREAD THE WORD.

Man Luke Thomas hates boxing! A prime kickboxer vs prime boxer match has never happened, so it’s a bit harsh to say kickboxing ’’owns’’ boxing! Frans Botha and Ray Mercer should never have been allowed to compete in either sport when they washed up in K1.
Snowden articulated his point better this time
I still think Penn is one of the all time greats, but I suppose in the context of the praise heaped on BJ from the beginning, yeah, I suppose he’s a disappointment in the same way a movie that is reviewed so well before viewed by the public is a let down in the context of expectations. Good show, Luke.
