Anderson Silva Wanted the Rematch Against Chael Sonnen
According to Anderson Silva's boxing trainer, Josuel Distak in an interview with tatame.com:
"(Chael) Sonnen was 100% and showed what he’s got… Now it’s the time for him to see Anderson from the right angle. I want to see how it’ll be like this time."
"Anderson Silva is taking care of himself in order to be 100% recovered from this injury. I think he’s coming back to Brazil to train with the team and, for sure, now you’ll see Anderson at his best. It’s not just him, but Anderson also wants this rematch to happen."
Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen 2 is rumored for the Super Bowl card in early February.

I understand the point he’s making but, just because Chael didn’t complain about an injury doesn’t mean he was necessarily 100%.

Chael was sick a day before the fight
and said no fighter is ever 100% and the more adversity the better.
This was at the work-out where he talked to Helwani. So maybe it was 2 days before the fight
Yeah Chael stated multiple times that almost all the time, you have something wrong with you when you enter the cage. And its not unreasonable at all.

He had some illness during the Marq fight too didnt he?
I cant remember what he said it was but he never mentioned it till much later.
Since when does "being sick" or "not being 100%" compare to a broken rib. I'm sure guys have nagging injuries a lot, but obviously they're not all the same.
"It's not what you know, it's what you can prove."
He got a broken rib
From Sonnen dumping him on his ass.
I'm sure it had nothing to do with the fact that it was injured prior to the fight. As I said below, I'm not even a Silva fan, just pointing out the obvious that everyone seems to forget, that not all injuries are the same, and you can't blanket the
issue. Could have used a better analogy but I figured everyone would get my point.
"It's not what you know, it's what you can prove."
bruised rib...
theres a big difference between a bruise and a break.
Anderson came in with a bruised rib.
People need to give Chael some credit instead of saying his performance was due to Silva not being 100% (Nobody ever is! Everyone has some small injuries… Florian had a leg injury before his fight and he’s not talking about it and complaining like Anderson did after the fight).
not trying to say bruises dont hurt
i’ve had bone bruises before and it hurts but its not that big of a deal really. More annoying than anything lol.
Not when its your ribs
It’s annoying just breathing and it hurts like a bitch when you move.
yeah i was just talking about my experience w/ bone bruises
depending on the area it can be worst. but its nowhere near as bad as broken
Bones bruises hurt worse than breaks.
Especially the ribs.
I’ve bruised my ribs, you can’t even move without the feeling of being stabbed. Every time I breathed in deep, coughed or laughed, it hurt like a bitch.

A sickness can effect you and reduce your ability to do many things.
If you’re sick and you get punched, you can see twice as much stars. You could have shortness of breathe just walking into the cage. You can have blurred vision, bad hearing, deafened reaction time and many other things. From a pain standpoint, the ribs are worse, but from a performance standpoint, I’d think most sicknesses are worse than a bruised rib.
And then God created Saturn... and he liked it, so he put a ring on it.
Twitter me and what not.
Depends on the type of sickness, and a sickness with zero visible symptoms even in a close-up interview isn't much of a sickness.
I’m not a Silva fan, I just hate how many times I’ve heard, “No one comes into fights 100%” when someone mentions an injury. I’m sure Silva has fought plenty of times with nagging injuries, but clearly this one effected him to the point that it hindered his performance. Simply put, fighters may not always be at 100%, but that doesn’t mean 95% and 75% are the same. You can’t just blanket it the entire issue and say there’s no difference.
"It's not what you know, it's what you can prove."
I didn't say any of that.
I wasn’t defending Sonnen, Silva or anybody. I was speaking only to sickness, which too many people take lightly. Even a cold can effect you more than a bruised rib if it’s far enough along.
And then God created Saturn... and he liked it, so he put a ring on it.

Yes.
How can you say otherwise? A bruised rib is pain that can reduce your lung capacity and at best be bad for your cardio and your ability to take strikes to the midsection and weaken you in the clinch/on the ground, where as a cold can ruin every little thing about your fight game. Including the things a bruised rib does, save for actual physical pain. It’s pretty hilarious to think otherwise. I’ve trained with both, myself.
And again – don’t make the mistake of thinking I’m talking about this fight. Don’t think I’m talking about one of your precious fighters, because I’m not.

There are injuries and injuries
Fighting with a broken rib is waaay tougher than fighting “sick”.
As I understand it (and I have no inside info), he came into the fight with some sort of minor soft-tissue rib injury but had them broken during the first, most likely in the 1st…
The original injury, while annoying, is not a game-changer in a fight. Cracked ribs on the other hand could very well affect him at certain times during the fight.
Having said all of that, Sonnen dominates him again before again falling victim to a choke, probably from guard – the guy just refuses to learn (or impliment) a plan of continually seeking positional improvement…

True
But means if Anderson looked like that for 4 rounds with a Broken rib, the rematch will be even more favourable for Anderson, unless Chael can break that rib again in the first round.

Anderson is no more capable of improving his TDD in any meaningful way than Sonnen is of improving his sub defense.
At the end of the day this fight will come down to whether Sonnen can consistently improve position or not…

Whatever. Whether he believed that or not he gave away that submission by being so aggressive almost like trying to finish him from inside the guard so I’d tend to believe him that he didn’t percieve Silva as a threat which is hardly an excuse it’s just really really stupid.
Goldberg on Leben: One thing's for sure--he really did break that door on the Ultimate Fighter.
Rogan: uh...yeah.
Hes very honest after a fight and during if you look past the hype
He was on ESPN and doing a breakdown and frankly I believe him because he was fighting off the subs in earlier rounds.
I saw that interview
actions speaks louder than words… is all I can say.
the following two things are signs of weaknesses:
stay silent when it's needed to speak up, and speak up when it's needed to stay silent.
Very true
which is why him fighting subs in rounds 1,2,3,4 convinced me he was telling the truth
I don’t understand, how does him fighting subs throughout the fight and end up being caught with one in the last round = he thought Anderson quit and he let his guard down? To me, in all honesty, it just means he was able to defend most of the subs but still got caught in the end, by a great BJJ BB… I don’t see how this should equate to him letting his guard down… he was still defending the triangle but Anderson then went for the arm, he caught him with two subs to which he had no answer. It’s not Chael letting his guard down as much as Anderson not giving him any room to escape.
the following two things are signs of weaknesses:
stay silent when it's needed to speak up, and speak up when it's needed to stay silent.
god Silva fans are so delusional… Chael had his guard down that entire fight more or less maybe it was a little lax but a “great BJJ BB” would have subbed Sonnen much faster considering how many opportunities Sonnen was giving.
Goldberg on Leben: One thing's for sure--he really did break that door on the Ultimate Fighter.
Rogan: uh...yeah.
Yeah
Anderson’s BJJ sucks. That’s why every opponent that has ever taken Anderson to the mat in the UFC has gotten subbed.

I must be the only 1 who remembers Anderson Dropping Chael on his Ass!
All i hear is how AS was dominated and its starting to annoy me! On the feet AS dropped him! yea he got reveresed on the ground but thats besides the point! I got the rematch ending in KO round 2 or 1.
Jon Jones Cannot be Stopped! and neither can Anderson SIlva! Rampage will Reign Supreme again! Brock is a MONSTER and Kos Will win in December! Forrest Griffen is SOOOOO Overrated! BJ will Be Re-throned aswell!
So basically
you except Chael giving a possible excuse, “Oh, the only reason that happened is because Anderson used mind tricks.”
And he didn’t say in that round in particular, he said throughout the fight he felt Anderson wilting but that then he would come back.
Josh Barnett is a thrice proven juicer with a pro wrestling mindset and a personality that would lead you to believe he's never had a romantic encounter that didn’t start with "you gotta pay me upfront."
I still don’t get this rematch. I don’t care how many minutes or rounds you are winning if you tap or get knocked out, you lose. Period.
Nope
People want to see Anderson challenged. No one else has come close, and Chael did it for 4 rounds. While I agree with you that it was a decisive finish and that the rematch isn’t in line with Shogun/Machida and Edgar/Penn, it will still be an entertaining fight that people will want to see.
6 months of training ain't going to fix Sonnen's submission problems
It’s probably going to end the same way.
Toronto FC - Where road games are forfeited and we STILL have no idea how to play from behind.
Sonnen doesn't need more BJJ training. He just needs to use his head.
Sonnen gave away that submission. He was in Anderson’s guard and just lazily leaned back while throwing wide but slow punches. I don’t know what he was thinking. I was screaming at him to stop leaning back in the fifth and occasionally in earlier rounds.
All he had to do was lean forward and punch Silva’s head with short shots and elbows, like he did all fight long. Silva isn’t a BJJ master that can get a submission from anywhere.
Nobody said he didn’t lose. All they said is it was a good fight, and he might win the rematch.
"I am a man who pisses largely and frequently, which they say is a sign of great mental activity" -Henry Miller-
Not the right match-up
I know people want to see Anderson challenged but I mean most people know how this one is going to end or should end. I just don’t see the point in wasting Andersons time or the fans time when everybody wants to see Silva vs St. Pierre and if you don’t then you are out of your mind. Silva with every rib in tact should finish the fight within the first 3 rounds. Granted anything can happen as we have seen but then what is next? Okami, Belfort, Marquardt again? Dana White proclaims that he makes the fights people want to see but can’t deliver on GSP and Silva? Give me a break.

After all the accusations Anderson has recieved these last few months that him and his managment team were ducking fights, well those people can just shut up now. Anderson has some grit, and this rematch is going to be another classic, hopefully with Anderson finishing it earlier this time.

"You hear people say, 'You're the greatest,' and all this stuff. It's BS. It's fake, it's all fake. You've just got to keep training as hard as you can. The only thing real is the fight, everything else is fake." - BJ Penn
Well*
I can’t say this is a real exciting prospect. I think that despite the 4 good rounds when a guy comes out of nowhere with a minute to go, and slaps a triangle/arm bar combination on you, and you still attempt your lame “I didn’t tap” routine but lose anyway. That the conclusion merits that you get at least one more fight, perhaps against the other guy that tooled you on the ground named Maia?. Before getting back in line for the title.
Can anyone, perhaps Brent come up with another circumstance where someone lost their title bid by submission and got an immediate rematch?. I think they are going to be hard to find.
In any case, when it does come pay attention to what Anderson is wearing, last time he came out(for the only time ever to date)with the GI and the Nogueira colors, then seemed to fight very hesitantly as if he were going for a submission only, eventually he got it. Look for him to come out like normal this time and end the fight more spectacularly with strikes.
There’s never been a title fight where a fighter lost every round and came back in the 5th, either.
Also the notion that Anderson was just sand bagging so he could get the sub is the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard.
Come to think of it, has any fighter been behind on the scorecards
But won in the championship rounds?
Toronto FC - Where road games are forfeited and we STILL have no idea how to play from behind.
Ricco vs. Randy?
"In this fight, Anderson showed he was human," Nogueira said. "He showed he could be weak. But he showed he is a fighter and he brings something from his heart. It was beautiful."
by Broke Lesnar on Aug 30, 2010 8:51 PM EDT up reply actions
So you scanned every title fight to support your claim then?
Otherwise, I will take that as a speculative never.
And nobody said Anderson was sandbagging. But if his intent was to win by submission how do you think he would accomplish that?
And I will be sure to tell Anderson, Ceasar Gracie, Jake Shields, the Nog twins, all the fighters from black house etc that you think they are stupid.
In the UFC specifically
The number of fights that have finished in the championship rounds is less than 10. The only one I can think of off the top of my head was Ricco-Couture, which was by most accounts 2-2 when Randy finished in the 5th. Feel free to find an example to prove me wrong.
If Anderson’s intent was to win by submission, I imagine it wouldn’t have been by getting tagged in the jaw, dropped on his ass and beaten up for four rounds. I imagine it would be a lot more like the Dan Henderson fight.
Anderson won, but acting like he’s a superhero who just took a beating so he could win the right way is laughable. I guess it’s one way to keep up the magical aura people like to surround him with.
Also, since you’re so tight with all those guys, tell Jake Shields I like his Tapout sig shirt. Thanks!
What about Shamrock/Ortiz?
I pretty sure Ortiz was dominating and far ahead when he tapped at the end.
And, in the Dan Henderson fight, he did not go into the fight with the intent to win by submission, it fell into his lap after Dan staggered into a clinch and in the scramble Anderson landed on his back. He was an opportunist looking for the quickest way to win.
But when Sonnen claimed that a Nogueira black belt was given out with a happy meal, why is it unreasonable to think that Silva took it as a challenge?. He came out in the colors and he looked for a sub. I would not say that it was the best strategy or that it went the exact way he wanted it to. But he clearly stated at the news conference afterward(and everyone apparently didn’t hear except for a few) that his intent was to end the fight by submission for his master Nogueira for “what was said”. I would guess that to win by submission he would need to get taken down since he likely knew he was not going to take Sonnen down(since no one really had before), he also knew that Sonnen lost most of his fights to submission from the top. If you can’t see that or buy what he says and hate him that much, that is up to you. But just make sure your around the day after he wins by strikes in the rematch.
And I am certain, that Anderson will be truly deflated to know that his superhero routine did not go over with you. He might just quit MMA altogether!

If GSP is a decision fighter...
By that logic so is Anderson. GSP’s last 6 fights were 3 finishes ( Penn, Serra, Hughes) and 3 decisions (Fitch, Hardy, Alves).
Anderson’s last 6 fights:
1 sub (Chael)
2 decisions (Maia, Leites)
2 KOs (Irvin and Griffin, both @ 205)
1 R4 TKO when Cote blew out his knee, but he was barely engaging Cote the entire fight
So 3 finishes, 2 decisions and 1 injury stoppage (an injury not causeed by Anderson, btw) makes him more of a finisher than a guy with 3 finishes and 3 decisions?
Furthermore
There is a strong argument that GSP was working much harder to finish Alves, Hardy and Fitch than Anderson was to finish Lietes, Cote and Maia.

For the first time in his UFC career, Silva, 33, was pushed past the second round — and that had little to do with his opponent. Defending the UFC middleweight belt against Patrick Cote, expectations demanded a resounding performance. Instead, the dangerous champion strutted his way through two-plus rounds before Cote fell to the canvas when his right knee gave way 39 seconds into the third.
Despite a close start to the fight, the crowd was displeased with both main event fighters and the anti-climactic finish. Silva showboated throughout the matchup, bowing to Cote at the end of the first round, offering to help him up off the ground, and playing games throughout, while Cote was booed for being unable to continue, despite doing his best to keep fighting.
No indication it was going any differently than the Lietes or Maia fights.
MMA is an unpredictable sport… you can’t assume what would have happened for two more rounds… besides, Anderson leg kicked Coté quite a bit as well, who’s to say that his injury was not made by Andy himself?

Wait, you're saying Anderson isn't a great finisher?

Nope
The real point is that when you’re a champion and fighting actual top contenders and not a series of scrubs, it becomes increasingly hard to get those impressive finishes you got when you were beating up middle of the road guys.
But if you’re going to complain that GSP isn’t finishing his fights lately, I don’t see how you can’t apply the exact same complaint to Anderson Silva, seeing as he hasn’t exactly been a stellar finisher lately. Especially if you don’t count his 205 fights.
instead of defending GSP (which you should have), you are comparing him to Andy, that’s where you went wrong. Anderson finish fights, and the two that he didn’t were the ones who all the “haters” thought he should have (and could have) finished but just ’didn’t feel like’ it for some reason (not my point of view). Anderson is a finisher, you can’t just try to defend a position (GSP is a finisher) by creating more BS as you did here (Anderson is a ‘decision’ champion).
the following two things are signs of weaknesses:
stay silent when it's needed to speak up, and speak up when it's needed to stay silent.
The original post is centered around Anderson
Because I don’t want another decision champion, which is what Chael will be. Frankie Edgar, GSP, and now Chael Sonnen? I want champs who finish, not those who win on points.
And my reply was that GSP finishes just as much as Anderson does. Opinions are opinions, you can like a guy or dislike a guy, but you can’t bitch at one guy for having decision finishes and then say you like another guy because he doesn’t get decision finishes when he’s getting just as many decisions as the guy you like.
ok
again, if you don’t think GSP is a ‘decision’ champion, and you don’t agree with that post, you should defend it by arguing how GSP isn’t a decision champion. Instead you are trying to argue that Anderson is a decision champion, which he obviously isn’t.
the following two things are signs of weaknesses:
stay silent when it's needed to speak up, and speak up when it's needed to stay silent.
It's everyone preference
How many decisions they find acceptable. Maybe half of your last 6 fights being decisions makes you a “decision champion”. I don’t think it applies in either guy’s case. But if you’re going to say half of the last 6 makes a decision champion, well, then apply it equally.
There are a lot of things I could argue about Anderson’s title run which I won’t in this post, but the fact is, if you want to bitch about GSPs 3 decisions being boring, you have to bitch about Anderons 2 decisions and an injury stoppage that was being booed for inactivity being boring too.
You could argue a lot about Anderson's title run
but how much of your argument would actually be right? Remember when you tried to say a bunch of his last title defenses weren’t in the UFC anymore….cause I sure do ;)

Dude
how can you say he hasn’t been a stellar finisher lately when Forrest and Sonnen just happened.

Why is everyone being dense?
Jason H is saying that GSP and Silva have shown the same level of finishing ability. He is not saying that Silva can’t finish.
IF you think GSP is a decision champ, like Body Triangle, THEN logic dictates that you think Silva is, too.
Money...
Ofcourse he wants a rematch…people are going to pay to see him fight Chael again….why would’nt he do it …It would probably be the biggest pay day of his career…
no doubt that this PPV would sell a lot
probably break any other Anderson Silva PPV

stay silent when it's needed to speak up, and speak up when it's needed to stay silent.
I was hoping they'd put Chael against the winner of Bisping/Akiyama.
They’re letting Chael sit on the shelf for way too long here. Bisping vs Sonnen would be epic for the trash talk, they’d even be the best opposing coaches ever for a season of TUF.

Nope
I have a hard time finding a lot to bitch about when it comes to the MW title picture. Silva v. Okami or Vitor will be awesome and whoever gets to Anderson next will have more than earned their shot. Of course, he has to get by Chael again first.
Opining about how Silva should be fighting Georges is silly. Dana and Georges both have their reasons for not wanting to do the fight and they are legitimate.

What?!? You must have meant to say
Dana andGeorgesAnderson both have their reasons for not wanting to do the fight and they are legitimate.
Considering that of the three of them, the are the 2 that keep not being interested in the fight, whereas GSP has consistently been in favor of it.

Georges has repeatedly said he is concerned about the extra weight and wanting to do it properly. He doesn’t want to be the BJ Penn to Anderson’s GSP. If he can’t put the weight on properly, he will not do the fight.

He has mentioned putting on weight properly if he is making a move to MW because it would be permanent.
Due to his (GSP’s) weight cutting, he already enters the cage for his WW fights heavier than Anderson does for his MW fights, although he is not nearly as big as some of the larger MWs (like Sonnen) who cut considerable weight.

For the record, I do want to see Silva v. St. Pierre. I just don’t like all the crybaby shit about why the fight hasn’t taken place yet(not in your response, the original one I responded to). If it does I will be thrilled, if not then oh well.

Yeah I believe that as much as I believe the fact that he had a broken rib before the fight. Neither Anderson nor his fans want anything to do with Sonnen again luckily they have no say about who gets title shots. People can try to spin things all they want but we all saw what happened Silva wasn’t just challenged he got his ass beat in the rematch Sonnen will finish what he started. We’ve already seen alot of guys exposed and put down this year things won’t change in 2011 because Sonnen is going to beat Anderson and it’s going to be awesome.

I’ll give it arrest after the rematch when Sonnen wins, then I can sit back and enjoy the tons of excuses Anderson fans will use to try and justify him losing.

almost every time Sonnen fights a good submission fighter he gets subbed.
He is too old to learn new tricks. This is a trend that will continue I am sure . Even if he beats A.S. (he won’t)that just means Maia will come Rape him again.

Sonnen has beaten plenty of good submission guys, I swear the myths that go around mma sites these days are amazing. It’s like whenever you mention something people don’t look into the facts they just run with them.

I'm really excited to see the odds on the rematch.
I expect Anderson to be the favorite but with the way Sonnen dominated I have trouble seeing it more than Silva -200.
