Quote of the Day: James Toney Had a Fun MMA Experience, Wants Another UFC Bout

BOSTON - AUGUST 27: UFC Heavyweight fighter James Toney at the UFC 118 weigh-in at the TD Garden on August 27 2010 in Boston Massachusetts. (Photo by Josh Hedges/Zuffa LLC/Zuffa LLC via Getty Images)

"That's the main reason I came to MMA. At least MMA guys got guts and they will get in a cage with me. The boxing guys are all talk and no walk. My thing is, all of these bums, David Gaye and Bucktooth Bernard Hopkins, talk all that shit; come and see me! They were quiet as mice until they saw I was signed to fight in the UFC and then they all had an opinion. I'm doing both and I ain't going nowhere. I'm in it for the long run baby. I'm the only two sport athlete out there and I'm doing the 2 most dangerous sports in the world. No other man will try to do that."

"Man, the fans in MMA are great. These motherfucking fans are...they fanatics man. It's great. I love the atmosphere that they bring. It reminded me of the old days of boxing; the 70's, 80's and early 90's. Boxing fans used to be like that and we need to bring that back. The MMA scene is so crazy and it's great. The fans stand in the hotel lobby from early in the morning until late at night. They are there when you wake up in the morning and they are there when you go to bed and that's fucking crazy. I love that shit. It was crazy man... I had a lot of support out there in Boston. They are a fight town and a couple of them actually remembered me from when I fought Ramon Garbey out there 10 years ago. It was great. I mean, 20,000 fans man? That's crazy. They showed me so much love in that city. I can't wait to go back."

"I knew Dana was trying to throw me to the dogs, but I wanted that. In fact, he didn't throw me to the dogs; I went looking for them. I went looking for trouble. That's why they call me JT, "Just Trouble." I loved it. I had fun in there and I can't wait to do it again."

--James Toney (0-1 MMA), seems to have genuinely enjoyed his UFC experience and wants another crack at it. Too bad Dana White doesn't seem to want him back anymore. If, or when, he gets released, I wonder how long before another promotion decides to place that phone call... or if any of them can afford his paycheck.

"It’s a different ball game, but not much different. Only thing is I got caught slippin. I should’ve bobbed and weaved instead of just weaved. I made a mistake. I paid for it. But I’ll be back, I ain’t worried about it. I don’t cry over spilled milk."

"I’ll be back. I’m not going anywhere, man. I’m a baby. Everybody falls off the wagon sometimes. (But) it ain’t like I lost my title or anything. It’s a learning experience, and I learned from one of the best."

"Let me tell you something, anybody else in boxing or MMA wouldn’t have done what I’ve done, because they don’t have the heart or the balls that I do. I’ve got big walnuts. Gorilla nuts. So I can do that. But I’ll be back. I’m going to fight next month in a boxing match and (then) in MMA in February or January. I’ll sit down and talk to Dana, (see) what’s going on. It is what it is."

His spin is amazing. First he hated on MMA. Now he is a “two sport athlete”. Nice.

I don't remember him actually 'hating' on MMA

just being delusional in thinking he could come in and actually beat Couture with no ground game at all

Paraphrasing

He called them “pussy gloves” and something along the lines of “only girls kick”. He said plenty of things like that. I’m not sure what the definition of “hating on mma” is, but I’m guessing statements like that fit the category.

I’ve got a love/hate with the guy. Assuming he’s willing to take a pay cut and is serious about wanting to keep fighting in MMA, I’m looking forward to watching him in Strikeforce, KOTC, or whoever decides to give him another shot.

You talk an amazingly good game, Mr. Toney

It is amazing how he can get horribly destroyed like that and still somehow talk you into thinking he’s this bad son of a gun. I mean he clearly did not take that fight seriously. At all.

by Clifford J on Aug 30, 2010 3:05 PM EDT reply actions

I think he did. I don’t think any of us would do any better vs Randy Couture if we were in the same situation with like 9 months to train something completely new to us.

While he did look lost on the ground it is hard to remember all the things you just learned when you’re getting punched in the face.

by Tats16 on Aug 30, 2010 3:20 PM EDT up reply actions

You know how I can tell he didn’t?

Because he came in at 237 pounds and was completely unaware of how the sport works. He didn’t know how to TAP OUT after 7-9 months of training? How does that happen?

First thing I said to my mates when watching was “Thank god he didn’t badmouth Jones early enough to give him time to move up to HW like he said he would”

..Can you imagine Bones dropping those hellbows on Toney when he fell into full mount like Randy did?. The fact he didnt even know how to tap (something that left me lost for words) certainly wouldn’t have helped his chances of not being hospitalised either.

I’d like to see him fight again in the UFC. Not in January. Toney needs a lot more training and a better match-up. Cro Cop might be too much for him, but maybe someone like Pat Barry or Duff Man might work.
I think it would really say something if Toney came back and showed some new knowledge. I just don’t have faith that he will.

by DayGeaux on Aug 30, 2010 3:18 PM EDT reply actions

It would be interesting to see him vs a striker but who would stand and bang with him? Even most strikers would probably use this as a way to test their ground game because it would be a free win for them.

And if someone did strike with him I wonder how many leg kicks he could eat before he tapped out or collapsed and unable to stand.

by Tats16 on Aug 30, 2010 3:26 PM EDT up reply actions

No doubt. Toney is a version of Kimbo (one with a worse ground game).
I think a cocky enough striker might strike with Toney, but they’ll be heavy on the kicks.

I think Toney represents boxing's dilemma with MMA

the passion, the raw fight-fan passion that is at nearly every MMA show is gone from boxing. Not everywhere of course, you see it in Montreal for Bute/Pascal fights, overseas where boxing is thriving. But in America? I really do respect Toney for getting in that cage with Randy Couture. He got owned, but I think Toney represents what a lot of boxing fans have been thinking – big fights and the big fight atmosphere now belongs to the UFC. And so does the money.

Enough with the freakshow fights already. This James Toney stuff was a huge waste of time, glad I won’t be seeing him in the octagon again. After that sorry performance, I can’t understand why anyone would want to see him do MMA again. He will get killed by anyone with good kickboxing or any kind of wrestling or jiu-jitsu, which doesn’t really leave any options for viable fights in the UFC. Go fight Herschel Walker or something, if you really want to continue with this farce.. or better yet, just retire. Grossly out of shape, way over the hill, one dimensional boxer with a bad style for MMA and without any significant KO power.. yah, who wouldn’t want that. Seems like some have bought into Zuffa’s marketing job of Toney a little too much IMO.

by Horselover Fat on Aug 30, 2010 4:05 PM EDT reply actions

it brought in the $$ though

and was slightly entertaining. it’s easy to say it was a waste of time etc etc (which it ultimately was in hindsight) now that we’ve seen the outcome but you have to admit that there was a slight part of you that was worried that Toney would pull off a KO of Capt America. everybody in the crowd was on the edge of their seats until Couture took him down…..

by BeeTrain on Aug 30, 2010 4:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, it’s pretty amazing how they managed to spin this and get people genuinely interested and thinking Toney had a legitimate chance. By the time the PPV actually happened I was getting real tired of all the hype and just felt like let’s get this over with so we won’t have to hear about it anymore. But yeah I can admit that I was a bit tense up until the takedown.. for what it’s worth though (nothing), I did chose to bet a large sum of fantasy money for little payout on Randy winning (something like $2200 for $300 win at mmaplayground). :P

I guess I’m a little provoked by some posters claiming for more Toney fights, I’m trying not to be too much of an elitist asshole about this. But basically we already know that traditionally boxers tend to do very poor when they enter MMA. Hell, they’re not even any good once you throw them into K-1 / kickboxing (with a few exceptions). James Toney at age 42 sure as hell ain’t going to change that.

This is just sad

I’m seeing all these people that are actually interested in seeing Toney fight again. Why?

When it comes down to it, any young, in shape, 200 pound “average joe” with no boxing or MMA experience would have done better against Couture. They would have at least tried to frantically escape from his mount or thrown a couple wild bows from the bottom. Toney just took it and looked like he was relieved that Couture went for the choke rather than GnP him to a pulp. In the end, Toney’s age and conditioning were even greater factors in his defeat than his lack of MMA experience.

The guy misses the money and the fame of his boxing glory days. Who wouldn’t? But his damaged brain needs some kind of “safety advocate” to make the decisions he won’t/can’t. It’s obvious that the commission won’t do it.
