UFC Fight Night 22 Preview: Nate Marquardt Says "It Is Tough to Stay Focused" on Rousimar Palhares

"Definitely if I can stay away from the ankle locks that is gonna be a plus and I think he is definitely disadvantaged in the standing fight so I think the more I can keep the fight standing the better. ... It depends on how aggressive he is. The more aggressive he is the easier its gonna be to find that knockout punch. But there again I feel comfortable to go on the ground if need be, I have very good training partners on the ground and guys that are super-strong too, guys that are good at ankle-locks… I feel very confident going into this fight."

"... When (Rousimar) goes to fight he goes to submit his opponents and if he can walk out of the ring with one of their legs he is gonna do it, so I think I gotta be very prepared for this fight and take him 100 per cent seriously."

"Rousimar is a very tough guy and very dangerous, I respect him. But sometimes it is tough to stay focused on this fight. Like you say, watching Chael and Anderson fight… I want to get back in there with both of those guys and show them that I am better than them."

Hey Nate

you probably should stay focused, cause if your ass losses you ain’t getting another whiff at the title for a long time.

Btw buddy, you know the best time to show that you are better then these guys would probably have been when you actually fought them…just saying.

Josh Barnett is a thrice proven juicer with a pro wrestling mindset and a personality that would lead you to believe he's never had a romantic encounter that didn’t start with "you gotta pay me upfront."

you'd think

the thought of Palhares handing Nate’s leg back to him would keep him focused…

Palhares is one of those fighters that doesn’t seem to mind breaking or at the very least, cranking with harsh intent on a limb during a submission. Frank Mir comes off like that as well. Besides working on submissions, Marquardt should be working on his greco-roman wrestling because Palhares is a bull when it comes to slams.

In part because he’ll be on the shelf for a year with three torn knee ligaments.

Marquardt’s dismissive attitude about Chael Sonnen = his dismissive attitude about Palhares.

  • Marquardt thought he was going to easily KO Sonnen.
  • Nate felt that training with GSP and other great wrestlers would put him in a good position against Chael Sonnen.
  • Extra Note: Kenny Florian felt training wrestling with GSP would prepare him for the Gray Maynard’s wrestling.

Special note to Marquardt: You are not better than Sonnen or Silva . . . well unless you actually prove it. One guy dominated you and the other guy finished you.

You make a good point, training wrestling with GSP at this point is not much to boast about.

by Bandaka on Aug 30, 2010 10:32 AM EDT up reply actions

I really don't care who you train with.

I don’t care if you train with Roger Federer or Nadal, that doesn’t mean crap because they’re not competing for you. Anderson Silva can bring in Couture, coach Kevin Jackson, or even Matt Lindland to help him train in wrestling, he won’t be able to close the gap in wrestling between him and Sonnen.

Paul Harris by leg removal

by the guy with the big nose on Aug 30, 2010 9:49 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

He should beat Palhares. He has the size advantage, he’s more than capable of laying on someone and controlling them without getting submitted if that should happen, and he’s better standing. Palhares by mystical monk kneebar sounds good as a prediction, but this probably looks a lot more like the Maia fight.

To give Nate his due ...

If you compare the first three rounds of Sonnen-Silva to the three rounds of Sonnen-Marquardt, Nate did better than Anderson did. He Momentarily KO’d Chael with a knee on a shot, busted him up, and almost got the submission that Anderson got by the 5th.

If Sonnen and Marquardt fought 5 rounds, I’d pick Marquardt to finish before 25:00

I think Paul Harris is a straight up beast. This could be an instant classic. I’m more interested in seeing these two than I am seeing that Mir vs Cro Cop nonsense.

Yeah nate, you should… because you look far far away from being “great” after those fights.

You know who I pray to? Joe Pesci. Joe Pesci. Two reasons; first of all, I think he's a good actor. Okay. To me, that counts. Second; he looks like a guy who can get things done. Joe Pesci doesn't fuck around. Doesn't fuck around.

Damn it Nate, get your head on straight

You’re getting up there on years and you’ve got the potential to be champion, but to do so you need to be Nate “My head is on straight” Marquwardt, not Nate “Im letting it get to my head Im great” Marquwardt.

Take every fight seriously and stay focused on only your next opponent, like its a championship fight, and before you know it, you’ll actually be there.
