to who? He’s not entitled to anyone to share his personal matters. Obviously promoters are finding out before he fights for them so that’s really all that matters.

Yeah, I agree but if he does have it, he shouldn't be trying to get a fight.

I suppose if some other fighter that is also Hep C positive wanted to fight him, I guess I don’t see why that would be a problem. We wouldn’t even have to know about it.

My doctor’s office called this year and told me I had Hep B. I went home, cancelled my upcoming fight, apologized to my wife, told some key training partners etc.

A couple hours later I remembered that I had been vaccinated for Hep B back in the ‘90s. I called back and asked them to verify they weren’t reading “positive” for the antibody of Hep B. Turns out the lady who called was office staff and was interpreting the results on her own accord—I was indeed positive for the antibody. I would have been super pissed but it felt so good to be clean I didn’t care.

I got back on the card before they found a new opponent and won the fight.

Man, medical confidentiality is most definitely not exclusive to the US. I’m no expert but I would assume it exists pretty much everywhere, at least in civilized countries. It’s kind of important stuff! I have no idea what kind of trouble, if any, they can get in for this in Poland though. But it’s pretty bad going public like that. It sucks, but Aleks really shouldn’t be fighting with a contagious blood disease, so in a way it’s almost a good thing if more people hear about it.

To clarify. To my knowledge they did not test Aleks themselves however they say they did acquire his medicals from American promoters.

I thought he shot ozone to help treat it, which is illegal in most countries. Also experimental and possibly dangerous.

Pegylated Interferon injections once a week combined with daily Ribavirin pills

though there are many new experimental treatments

Nope...

My dad has it. It’s with him for life. He has a much higher possibility for liver cancer.

He shot up once when he was 17 and got it.

by Barack Lesnar on Aug 3, 2010 8:01 PM EDT up reply actions

No...

It can’t be spread from father to baby. He had it when i was born and my mother doesn’t have it either. Nor does his current wife. It’s rarely (if ever) spread sexually. Needles and blood transfusions are the main culprit.

My dad was never a druggie, only shot up once in his life but it cost him. He’s lucky he didn’t get AIDS because it was around 1979 when the outbreak began.

He doesn’t really have any symptoms yet, just an increased risk for liver issues. He was a casual drinker and had to stop completely just to keep his liver in the best shape possible.

It’s tough man. My father contracted Hep C the same way. He was a heavy drinker for years and when he was finally diagnosed the damage was done. He passed away in 2007 a year after his liver transplant. This is a very serious disease but it sounds like your father is in a good spot to fight it.

it is curable in over 50 percent of patients

this is take from the cedars sinai website

Hepatitis C is curable in more than 50 percent of patients. There are many factors which may influence the likelihood of responding to treatment. Some of these include genotype (strain) of the virus, the viral load, body weight, extent of scarring of the liver, gender and age.

There are six different “strains” or genotypes of the virus. The length of treatment is determined by genotype and response to therapy. Genotype 1 is the most common in the United States. It is also one of the most difficult to treat.

The standard of care for treatment of chronic hepatitis C is Pegylated Interferon injections once a week combined with daily Ribavirin pills. Interferon boosts the immune system to attack liver cells infected with hepatitis C virus and inhibits viral replication. Ribavirin has a broad-spectrum of antiviral activity and inhibits replication and infectivity of the virus.

There can be many side effects associated with interferon, some of which include flu-like symptoms, nausea, depression, injection site reactions and lowering of certain blood counts. Ribavirin can cause anemia, fatigue, headache and skin rash. Despite a multitude of possible side effects, most patients are able to tolerate and complete the treatment. Expert treatment centers are skilled in strategies to minimize these side effects to allow patients to continue therapy.

There are many new and exciting therapies being developed for hepatitis C. This is a rapidly evolving field. There are now options for those who have failed standard therapies.

by Johnathan Willis on Aug 3, 2010 8:14 PM EDT up reply actions

it’s curable in something like 50 to 80 percent of people
it depends on which genotype of hep c it is as to how likely it is to be cured
genotype 2 and 3 are the most likely to respond to treatment with something like a 75 percent success rate with 24 weeks of treatment

who is keizer soze

by Johnathan Willis on Aug 3, 2010 8:07 PM EDT up reply actions

I should have said it’s not Always curable. Sometimes it’s cured, sometimes it’s not.

by xfreekx on Aug 3, 2010 8:19 PM EDT up reply actions

its all good

with the advancements in the field hopefully it will be completely curable in the next 5 to 10 years

who is keizer soze

by Johnathan Willis on Aug 3, 2010 8:22 PM EDT up reply actions

another thing to note is

the genotypes of hep c that are the most common in european and african countries are way more treatable than the genotype commonly found in americans

so the hope for and likelihood of aleks being able to treat and cure the hep c is better than it is in america because of the type of genotypes found in the different countries

The rumor from before was HBV not HCV (obviously chronic at this point). After 2 years from the first time this came up we would have to assume that he’s tried to cure it and failed if he is still testing positive for it. Or I guess he could of had B before and got C now as a separate case but that really would be something else.

A source close to the situation spoke to MMANews.com’s Michael Moody on a condition of anonymity and explained that the blood tests came back right before Aleks and Buentello were scheduled to weigh in and that is why there was so much confusion around the stage and why the fighters did not weigh in. Gary Goodridge ended up stepping up on extremely short notice and filling in for the Russian heavyweight.
.
The tests were positive for Hepatitis B which resulted in the CSAC cancelling the fight.
