"How Not to Punch" - Tyson Griffin vs. Takanori Gomi

It's been a while since I've done an entry in this series but here we are again. In "How Not to Punch" we take a look at simple mistakes made in striking that lead to the end of the fight.
In his bout with Takanori Gomi at UFC on Versus 2, Tyson Griffin made a mistake that plagues a lot of fighters in MMA by throwing a combination from relatively close quarters and throwing wide, looping punches. Gomi is actually doing the same thing but it's where counterpunching and timing come into play. While Griffin is throwing his left hand "from his back pocket" he is doing it while Gomi is already firing punches at him. Gomi loads up his right hand as the kick from Griffin lands so Tyson isn't going to be able to replant his foot and fire a solid punch by the time Gomi's fist makes its journey.

Gomi's punch actually is similar to a right hook version of the left hook KO by Manny Pacquiao:
Both the Gomi and Manny KOs show that you can get away with loading up on the hook as long as you have a solid grasp on timing. Gomi has that solid counterpunchers timing and that allowed him to make sure his hook got there first and flipped Griffin's light switch.

Great analysis
Not every winging punch is created equal. Gomi was showing much better movement and much better flow from punch to punch.
Tatum: I think he's a good man. I like him. I got nothing against him, but I'm definitely gonna make orphans of his children.
I am going to go out on a limb here
and say Gomi hits really really hard

Cavemen looked dead a few thousand years ago.
People on the Isle of man built houses 9000 years ago.
Does it really matter which number you use?
They’re both equally unbelievable.
In other news: people are crazy.

Your style's like garbage cans meant to be taken out on a weekly basis
Ever since your first record you've been in a state of suspended animation
You look like Snuffleuffagus and Australopithecus
Me cray, you abacus
Gifs after the break!
Safari almost had a stroke on me there
I throw raps that attack like the Japs on Pearl Harbor/MC's be out like bank robbers/Fleeing the scene, to be a sole survivor/DJ the getaway driver/Tried to dip but he dive, I socialize on vocal vibes/On tracks stabbed up with razor sharp knives
Gifs are Safari’s kryptonite. Switch to Chrome, at least when a page gets gif-sassinated if doesn’t kill all the other tabs you have open.
yeah
I was using Chrome for a while, but Safari 5 just has so much speed. I’ll switch back when the next edition of Chrome comes out

Can we tuck the gifs after the jump please?
Some of us are from the third world and have awful computers I’m afraid.
Always enjoyed the series but figured it was dead. Any chance you’re planning to keep releasing them?
Were they always?
Could’ve been a background tab, ff crashed on me. I keep getting a script error with sb for some reason, recently.
that and he was regaining his balance
from the leg kick. Notice when Griffin lands the leg, it lands hard enough to move Gomi’s front leg. He make’s sure he’s balanced and winds up from the cheap seats to throw that right.

Griffon's leg kick actually HELPED Gomi
In kicking Gomi’s lead leg towards the outside, he actually widened Gomi’s stance and helped him achieve for rotation (torque) in that hell hook.
Tyson was nicely out of range of Gomi’s straight left and he was probably counting in his leg kick to knock Gomi’s support out from under him which would prevent him from throwing the hook with any power. Obviosuly that didn’t work out for him cause you can see Gomi immediately replant his right foot after Tysons kick and still generate all that power for the KO. I dont think anyone else would have connected on that punch after getting the their lead leg kicked out let alone land the KO.
Your beliefs become your reality.

Not that this isn't a fine analysis...
but another big issue with this combo is a rear leg kick takes a coon’s age to reach an opponent with the opposite stance. If he’d have thrown it it at the end of a combo, or if Gomi had been in full retreat mode he probably wouldn’t have been so open for that counter. Otherwise there’s just too much real estate to cover with that kick against a good counter puncher. Gomi was probably waiting for it.
Right leg: will hurt a little bit; left leg: will hurt even less.
In sparring practice, one thing I look for is someone to throw a leg kick where my training partner’s face is going towards me instead of away or to the side of me (out of range). Gonzaga got clobbered by JDS for making that mistake, and now Tyson Griffin got KOed because of that same mistake. It goes to show that even in the professional level, pros make these same mistakes.
Also before that exchange Gomi was hittting Griffin with hard body shots, which probably also made him lower his guard
Very hard body shots
A little before the KO he landed two in relatively quick succession, you could see the pain in Griffin’s face, and he dropped his hands for a moment. Power like that is just fun to watch.
The UFC could potentially groom Gomi for a title shot, I could see his style and demeanor after fights making him a huge fan favorite. Fighting Nate for “revenge” against Nick, then calling out BJ would make for such a cool storyline. Of course I’m getting way ahead of myself here.
Gomi looks like he was reaching back into the crowd
for that one. That was a hell of a fast hook from Gomi which basically included the kitchen sink.
As devastating as that was,
Those early body shots must have SUCKED. Getting your lights put out doesn’t feel like much of anything (“Hi, I’m Jemal and I’ve gotten beat up for my stupid fat mouth!” “Hi, Jemal!”), but those first two square in the breadbasket looked BAD.
