UFC 117 Quote of the Day: Roy Nelson "(Junior Dos Santos) Is the Best Guy in the UFC Right Now."
"If I could pick my way to the top, this is one of the fastest ways to do it. I wanted to fight for the belt my very first fight, so this is OK with me.
"Hands down, I think he's the best guy in the UFC right now. This is my title fight, because I look at it as I think this guy can beat the guy who has the belt. I think Junior is the best."

It’s possible, but it’s also impossible to know for sure… whatever Roy needs to tell himself so that he comes out for this fight in the best shape possible is fine with me. I’m really looking forward to this.
All the doctors and experts won't be able to
put together Roy Nelson after this fight. I fear this could put Roy out for like a year. Maybe 2 years. JDS will just rip him a new butt. I do think JDS is the best heavyweight in the world. His ground game is not tested though. We’ll know after this fight how JDS woul fare against a Cain or Brock

Nelson has a great ground game
but he won’t test JDS’ takedown defense the way Cain or Brock will.
If this fight hits the ground, it will be a great preview of things to come though.
I like Nelson, but I have to roll with JDS here.
I wanna see JDS' ground game before I anoint him as the best
Getting past Carwin, Lesnar and Velasquez will require it
i think roy beats jds

Could happen...
If it does I will be sad, but not too sad. JDS losing to Roy would prove he isn’t ready for the big wrestlers.
I'm in exactly the same spot
This is, by far my favorite fight on the card. I am a huge JDS mark, and love watching him fight, but I also really like and respect Roy Nelson. I want JDS to win, because I want to see JDS in a title fight, but if Roy manages to stop that freight train, I’m going to be awfully impressed.

JDS is so fun to watch. I’d really, really like to see him fight Overeem, but I’m pretty sure Overeem’s never coming to the UFC. He loves K-1 too much, and I can’t blame him.
I don’t see how Nelson wins, though. He’s not really better than Gonzaga in any way, and Gonzaga didn’t have anything for JDS.
This is how I see the fight
I think guys are building Nelson up a lot and doing some wishful thinking about JDS not having a real ground game. Gabe is bigger, stronger, and just as good at BJJ as Nelson and JDS tooled him. Nelson might have a little more heart, but I still think he’s gonna get caught at some point.

Nelson has better hands and better top control than Gonzaga. I don’t quite get how Gonzaga has gotten the hype he has mainly from beating an older Cro Cop and from a loss with Couture. He did kick the hell out of Tuchscherer’s junk though.
Gonzaga beat Cro Cop when he was on the top
and he was giving Carwin hell before getting KO’d, the thing he lacks is heart, Roy has the advantage there, but IMO Gonzaga has better hands and BJJ than Nelson.
the following two things are signs of weaknesses:
stay silent when it's needed to speak up, and speak up when it's needed to stay silent.
"I don’t see how Nelson wins, though. He’s not really better than Gonzaga in any way"
I think Nelson has better clinch takedowns and I think he is a smarter more disciplined fighter.
yes jds is a great stand up machine
but can he take being put on his back time after time? can he get back up if a brock, cain, or carwin take hime down? untill we see a ground game, i honestly dont think he is the best. ROY is going to find out sat. I put money he will jab his way into a clinch, then work a takedown..roy will show us all if jds has a ground game or not.
I'm not sure Roy is the guy who tests Junior's ground game
He’s going to have huge reach problems, and while he’s very good on the ground, it’s not like he has an awesome double-leg. His style for getting it to the ground is going to put him in reach for JDS to light him up.

Roy's so full of himself
I wanted to fight for the belt my very first fight, so this is OK with me.
What did he do outside the UFC to earn an immediate title shot? Oh that’s right, he was on a 2 fight losing streak to Arlovski and Monson.
On second thought, they should just hand him the title.

Who doesn't want to fight for the belt in their first match?
Pete Spratt?
Called it before the fight:
Cardio - The BIG question. Does Shane Carwin have cardio? He's never gone past the first round. His muscle mass is astounding and we all know that with all that muscle comes a need for the heart to pump fresh oxygenated blood to keep them from building lactic acid. He does train up in the thin air of Colorado, so that can't do anything but help. However, we have seen him pretty winded after a 1st round fight. Adrenaline dump or cardio problems? We won't find out the answer to that until someone takes him out of the first round.

I may be in the minority...
…but I’m totally looking forward to this fight more than the others. Roy gots skillz, homies.
No doubt
But he’s still a little full of himself. Maybe that’s what’s really in the belly…

I'm actually inclined to agree with Roy
I wouldn’t say JDS has earned that rank matchup-by-matchup yet, but I do believe that he has the most interesting skillset and the most potential out of the “big four” (Cain, Brock, Carwin and himself).
(Plus, according to MMAth his Werdum win makes him #1)
Out of the big four he and Brock seem to look the most one dimensional to me.
Maybe Roy will get it to the ground and we can see if he has anything other than standup.
It's just because we never had the chance to see his ground game.
We can’t really judge JDS until we see somebody take him down successfully. Don’t forget that he’s a brown belt in bjj so i’m pretty sure he can hold himself on the ground to some extent.
I'm looking forward to this fight
I really wanted JDS vs Cain. I thought that would have been awesome. But Nelson is a live underdog in this fight. His hands are decent, he’s got a mass advantage and some good ground skills that give him a possible path to victory, and he’s on a roll right now. I haven’t seen a betting line, but I’m guessing JDS is -300 or so, a solid but not untouchable favorite.
I consider myself a softcore fan.
