Quote of the Day 2: Shaquille O'Neal Wants to Fight MMA, Calls Out Hong Man Choi

ESPN did the tale of the tape for Shaq vs Hong.

I'd like to fight one guy. I'd like to call out, they say pick on someone your own size. That guy would be Hong Man Choi out of Korea. Seven footer fighting seven footer. That'll probably be my one and only fight. At 38 it probably wouldn't be advantageous for me to get it in with these young animals. Cause that's what they are.

Not saying that Shaq is more technical

but just because fighter A fought fighter B does not mean he will crush fighter C.

Case in point, Diego fought BJ and hung with him (to some extent), but he didn’t crush Hathaway.

MMAth doesn’t work, and although Hathaway is better than Shaq, Diego is much better than HMC. For my money I would say Shaq has a 50/50 shot of winning… if he gets his hands on HMC and can take him down, I highly doubt that HMC can get out from under him. If he can’t get him down, he loses, plain and simple.

In all honesty, I don’t even want to talk about this because I don’t want to see this happen. I know Shaq is a fan, but this kind of shit is making mma look like a joke. I hate these freakshow fights. I don’t want mma to be known for this. Before I left work on Friday, two of my coworkers who know nothing about mma were talking to me about the Toney fight and wondered what I thought about it — they knew nothing of Couture and thought Toney had a shot even though they both knew he was pretty much done in boxing. It makes the sport look like a joke.

When I think of Shaq I think of his ineptitude at free throws, his WWE bullshit and Kazaam. I do not want to include mma into that. It’s embarassing.

By the way, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to go on a bit of a rant here and yes, I understand MMath — anyone just needs to look at the circles that go in the LHW division to understand it.

Shaq

Will put eyeballs on the sport, If UFC did a card like this with Shaq VS HMC as a Co Main even it will do more than 1 million ppv buys, espically if a solid card it built around it. He is taking a very realistic approach to it, setting real expectations and the fight minus the experience of HMC would be a good matchup.

Not say it's the same situation

obviously Hathaway is better than Shaq, and obviously Diego is better than HMC. Still, I think the argument holds some merit: just because HMC fought Fedor does not mean he will outright beat Shaq, in the same way that just because Diego fought BJ didn’t mean he would beat Hathaway.

You know why MMAth doesn't work here?

Cause Shaq isn’t an MMA fighter.

Josh Barnett is a thrice proven juicer with a pro wrestling mindset and a personality that would lead you to believe he's never had a romantic encounter that didn’t start with "you gotta pay me upfront."

Toney did his part to earn it

Just not in the ring.

That fight was basically the main event. Its the fight everyone was talking about and the fight we all wanted to see. Toney ran his mouth so much, everyone either hated him or was intrigued by his delusional self confidence. I’m not sure that many people would have paid to see Edgar/Penn II by itself. It was almost an afterthought.

Even he Toney only generated extra 50,000 buys, it was still well worth the money. Not only do they turn a profit, Toney also brought in a lot of mainstream media attention.

Choi last year vs Sefo:

HMC vs Minowa:

He weighed 319lbs in that fight, down 50lbs of mostly muscle in one year.

Odds are, he’s even smaller now. I don’t think he would do too well with someone much bigger and stronger than him who knew how to grapple.

Sylvia is a former UFC HW champ with 27-6 record

He just beat a legit fighter.

HMC is 2-3, with wins over Jose Conseco and Bobby Ologan.

I understand your point. Its valid. I just don’t think it applies this time.

Running up and down the NBA floor and still being that strong is way more impressive to me. Strongman takes the exact opposite kind of conditioning you’d need for MMA. Pudz’ body type is terrible for MMA. Shaq, on the other hand, has a perfect body for MMA, IMO.

I also think that the years of BJJ along with a 455lb bench press would mean Shaq had much better MMA strength than most fighters.

One more thing: HMC is shrinking and losing his strength. Rapidly. He used to be 370lbs, solid. He was 319 vs Minowa last year. He lost a ton of muscle. He just seemed slow and weak, nothing like he was in his big wins in K1. Its like Superman got hit with Kryptonite. Its sad, but I guess it saved his life.

Can you imagine Shaq in full mount, sitting on your chest? Turrible.

I would glady watch.

Whichever promotion can sign that fight will get epic press coverage…

Somebody call the people behind YAMMA, they have a main event!

My avatar has Bas Rutten and Terry Funk in it...therefore it's the manliest avatar on SB Nation.

I'd watch this.

And I’d give Shaq a better chance than most of you are. Would be interesting to watch, imo.

I'm the best ever. You're the most average in a minute.

Semmy Schilt

His MMA record is 2-3 but his 3 losses where to fedor, Cro Cop, and Minowaman.

I’m surprised their weights are so different right there. HMC is only an inch taller, but has 25 pounds on him? Shaq ain’t no skinny dude.

HMC is about 315 now, since they removed his tumor.

Shaq said a few months ago he was 345.

They all the same man.

That’s why I never let them come to my place.
I always crash at their house.

Easy exit.

Isn't it crazy

the operation that saved Choi’s life also took away his ability to fight?

Wait a minute here...

Why hasn’t anyone mentioned that as improbable as this matchup might be, there’s no way it’ll happen while Shaq is still under NBA contract? I imagine that if the team can get money back if you crash a motorcycle you aren’t supposed to be riding or hurt yourself snowboarding, they wouldn’t be happy if you tried your hand at any of the combat sports. Rolling around and doing some BJJ in the off-season is one thing, but fighting a guy that is more than capable of doing you harm, that’s a whole ’nother story.

Ducks stackin' wins like Leggos, toastin Pac-10 like the Eggos, like we're racin' against some preggos, Dan Patrick we enfuego. Free Schierholtz!!
