UFC 118 Recap: FightMetric Report for Frankie Edgar vs. B.J. Penn 2

Photo by Esther Lin for MMA Fighting

There was no controversy this time. Frankie Edgar beat B.J. Penn with better execution of the gameplan he used in the first fight. Edgar straight befuddled Penn all night with in-and-out movement, takedowns, feints, takedown feints, speed, and volume. Penn looked disinterested from the time he entered the cage, and that disinterest turned into complete impotence by the final round.

FightMetric released their report late last night, and while there aren't many surprises therein (the system did award Penn the first round), the numbers tell the tale. Here's the stat summary:

Name Total
Strikes
Significant
Strikes
Takedowns Effectiveness
Scores
Edgar 142 94 3 385
Penn 56 36 2 203

Frankie Edgar's performance speaks for itself. Masterful.

Looks like your table has “total” and “significant” strikes backwards.

Masterful is right

Frankie just seems to get better everytime out. Frankie’s performance last night should go down as one of the best of this era of the sport.

wat?

he played it extremely safe, nothing fancy there. he relied on what he knew he could do and obviously it was enough.

let’s not make more of this.

Frankie completely befuddled a guy that many people think is the greatest 155er to date.

What? He dominated in every aspect. He picked Bj apart. How was he “playing it safe?”

i should've probably quoted the part of the comment i was replying to
Frankie’s performance last night should go down as one of the best of this era of the sport.

and with this i still don’t agree.

Frankie Edgar pitched a perfect game

He did what no one thought he was capable of doing. His performance was flawless and he beat BJ Penn in every single facet of the game.

Legendary performances aren’t always about max entertainment value or fancy techniques. Look at Maurice Smith’s victory over Mark Coleman, it wasn’t the most exciting fight and Maurice Smith didn’t do anything “fancy”, yet that fight stands as one of the all time great performances in the sport.

If you weren’t entertained last night, that’s fair, it’s your prerogative, but don’t short sell Edgar’s performance in the cage. Much like a perfect game in baseball, performances like last night don’t come along every day.

Agreed

He’s getting better every fight. I think he beats Maynard this time out.

56 strikes for Penn???

Wow…..what does that tell us? That he just didn’t feel like fighting? 2 takedowns for a BJJ blackbelt?? SAD!!!

What’s the matter BJ?

Fightmetric proves that Penn didn't learn ANYTHING from the first fight.

Knowing that Frankie wouldn’t go toe-to-toe with him, Penn had nothing for Edgar’s in-and-out style of fight.

56 strikes means that he was A) standing around waiting to counter B) too slow and C) unwilling to adjust to the style of fight that Edgar “would” be using.

I think C is the biggest flaw and NOT the mindset of a “champion”.

Well summed up.

BJ looked interested for the first 30 seconds

and that’s about it. As soon as it dawned on him that being mad wasn’t going to be enough, his energy changed.

Only 3 takedowns for Edgar?? I call bullshit.

I’ll have to rewatch, but FM doesn’t credit a takedown if you don’t establish position, if I remember correctly.

You can tell which BJ is there as soon as he enters the cage...

Violent BJ: Staring at his opponent with his fist up slapping himself in the face, leans in on the staredown and runs to the center of the octagon.

Passive BJ: Stands there, arms at side looking bored, during the staredown he just stands there. Compare the Diego staredown to the Edgar staredown.

I don’t know what’s up with BJ, but he just doesn’t look like himself.

This is the key

The mental element has always been Penn’s “kryptonite”. Frankie fought better than I thought he would and stayed smart, but his reign will be short and to be honest I don’t see how he beats even Florian, Guida or even a Evan Dunham.

by SimplePsych on Aug 29, 2010 4:07 PM EDT up reply actions

By being better at everything.

Edgar would wrestle circles around Guida, and he sure as hell wouldn’t have any problem with him standing.

Where was James Toney's TD Defense?

I tried and tried, but I just couldn’t be mature about this. Haha! Where were all of those slick moves your sparing buddies were talking about. An ankle pick? Really? You may commence with your very skilled grammatical backpedal now.

Maybe something will come out in the following weeks, but, it seems to me that BJ just hasn’t evolved with the sport. He prepares and fights the same way he did five years ago. Then he could be successful, now it just doesn’t cut it.

Penn needs to go to AKA or Jackson’s MMA (although that’s not going to happen) to retool. There’s obviously no reason that he can’t beat edgar or anyone else in the LW division. He needs to offensively use his wrestling a great deal more.

He doesn’t need to go to AKA or Jackson’s. Any quality team not based in Hawaii will do. He just needs to get away from the cult of Baby Jay that he has cultivated in Hilo.

by Steve4192 on Aug 29, 2010 7:46 PM EDT up reply actions

I disagree about the team. He just needs to get a coach. He needs someone to kick his ass and be smart for him.

"You hear people say, 'You're the greatest,' and all this stuff. It's BS. It's fake, it's all fake. You've just got to keep training as hard as you can. The only thing real is the fight, everything else is fake." - BJ Penn
