UFC 118 Results: B.J. Penn Loses to Frankie Edgar Again

Frankie Edgar takes down BJ Penn enroute to a lopsided decision -- Photo by Tracy Lee

It was a rematch of the UFC 112 fight, B.J. Penn wanted to reclaim his title from Frankie Edgar.

Instead Frankie Edgar showed that he is for real and that he has the answer for "the Prodigy".

B.J. Penn chased Frankie Edgar around the cage throwing and landing punches before Edgar took him down. B.J. was immediately dominant in guard and was escaping to Edgar's back but couldn't get his own take down. Back on the feet, Penn landed with a left as Edgar danced laterally and fired punches. Edgar took him down with a big slam, but Penn quickly got back to his feet.  Then Edgar got another take down. By the end of the round, Penn was slower and Edgar's dizzying movement kicked in.

In the second, Penn landed multiple jabs before Edgar shot in and took him down. Penn quickly fought back to his feet. Then they traded with Edgar's fleet footwork controlling the fight.

The third was more of the same. Edgar moved in and out and landed on the champ. Penn sprawled on a take down but otherwise couldn't do much to Edgar. Frankie landed a wide variety of strikes, beautifully mixing up his varied punches with kicks and elbows. He landed to the legs, body and head.

Going into the fourth everyone knew that Penn had to finish to win the fight.

B.J. Penn then took Edgar down and went for the kill. Edgar defended himself and escaped to his feet. Edgar dropped Penn with a leg trip and threw elbows on the ground. Penn worked rubber guard from his back. Then Edgar escaped and worked the ground and pound on Penn with hard punches from the top. Penn got back up and once again Edgar outscored him standing.

By the beginning of the fifth round, Penn had to be desperate. He immediately shot in for the take down. They scrambled through a staggering series of positions before Edgar landed in Penn's guard. From there Frankie landed elbows and punches and Penn wasn't able to work much off his back.

The B.J. Penn era of the lightweight division ended with a whimper, not a bang.

LOL! BJ Penn and his Band of Kronies lose again!

Happy for Edgar, he got no respect leading up to his first title defense.

Penn needs to re-evaluate life for a little bit, he looked like a man who clearly DID NOT want to be there.

Take a break.

What was Penn doing all fight? He seemed to have come in with the exact same gameplan as the first fight. In his defense I thought he won the first fight so maybe he was thinking he could eek out a decision win this time but damn..

He just needs to get in a different camp. Having all yes-guys around you is fucking weak and BJ should notice it. BJ had a bad game plan (same from the first fight), no plan B and terrible work from his corner in between rounds, this all has to do with his camp and people in it. You are right though, if he doesn’t shake shit up and just keeps fighting with things the way they are, he needs to retire sooner rather than later.

People said the exact same thing after Rashad beat Chuck. Then, as time and perspective showed, people realized Chuck was burnt toast and Rashad got the ass whipping of the century against Machida. Not to say Edgar isnt good, but lets not get carried away quite yet.

by Hutchy on Aug 29, 2010 12:57 AM EDT up reply actions

When I said he’s for real, I meant he’s legit. Maynard is probably next for Edgar, and Edgar may very well lose again, but he beat BJ twice. At least Edgar belongs in the top five LWs in the world. I definitely wasn’t assuming an Edgar era. I learned that mistake after I jumped on the Machida era band wagon.

For starters...

Florian (calling him chokemaster is criminal in and of itself)
Sherk
Stevens

Hell, lumping Serra, Uno and even Ludwig in with a couple of those other guys is pretty unfair too.

Additionally, given that Gilbert, Thomas (who is probably unfair to treat as a scrub too) and Creighton are 3 of Penn’s first 5 fights its unfair to treat them like tomato cans he was kicking around to pad his record.

Frankly, the more we discuss this, the more criminal it appears to try and even compare the “quality of competition” between Fedor and Penn.

Granted, Fedor won all his big fights, however its is also pretty easy to argue that Penn consistently fought tougher competition considering size differences.

I like Fedor, it’s just his fans that are intolerable...and his management.

I thought something was off with Penn when he walked out tonight. In the cage he looked really weak. I’m not really sure whats going on, but I wonder if he’s over-training. His face looked a little sallow too.

Also, I was pretty disgusted with Penn’s corner. I think about 50,000 people in the stadium could have acted as better cornermen for Penn. Comments like “You stronger than this guy” aren’t really helpful or constructive because in truth, he wasn’t.

With that said, Edgar fought an incredible fight and he is the undisputed lightweight champ. I’m a big fan of his.

I think BJ should retire. It hurts to say that but I’m not sure he should continue..no career path makes much sense right now.

This woman does something to BJ Penn

Four of BJ’s seven losses have come against fighters she manages

Did anyone hear Penn on Buffer's radio show?

He was talking about how he realizes now that the “body” is only a small part of MMA and he trained accordingly. He also fought accordingly.

I sure didn’t call Edgar completely outclassing Penn like that, but I’m still damn glad to see it….especially after hearing everyone whine about the first fight. Edgar vs. Maynard may not be appealing to alot of people, but both guys keep winning, and their the top two lightweights in the ufc right now…so bring it on.

I'm Sad.

"In this fight, Anderson showed he was human," Nogueira said. "He showed he could be weak. But he showed he is a fighter and he brings something from his heart. It was beautiful."

I have eternal hate for BJ's corner

I didn’t once hear them say anything about chopping down Edgar’s legs with kicks, or cutting off the octagon, or anything remotely helpful. I think I did hear them once ASK BJ WHTA HE SHOULD DO. Edgar’s one consistent advantage over BJ is his speed of movement, and that is entirely predicated on his legs working. Penn should have been told to go Rua or Aldo on Edgar’s legs while keeping his hands high. That may have opened him up for more takedowns, but BJ’s ground game should trump edgars 9 out of 10 times.
