UFC 118 Results: Randy Couture Snuffs Out James Toney
Well it was a lot of talk and not even remotely a good fight, but Randy Couture took down, beat up and choked out James Toney at UFC 118.
Randy Couture took James Toney down, mounted him and began raining down punches on James Toney. Then he trapped his head and arm in a choke and made him tap.
It was a novelty fight that the UFC pushed hard. But no one should be surprised by this outcome.

This fight is one of those cases where the hype makes you have doubts. It’s like when I thought Forrest Griffin had a chance against Silva. Afterwards you just feel dumb.

Granted, it’s tough for even well-trained fighters to defend against Randy’s takedown. So all things considered— even though it was clearly a one-sided affair— I don’t think it was AS bad as it technically could’ve been (at least Toney TRIED to throw punches from the bottom and landed some so-so body shots from his back). And he did last a decent amount of time in that choke (until he got it in deep at least).
Either way, no one is surprised.
said his ground game is ok, he didnt expect randy to be so aggressive and he will be back, he aint a quitter ( talking about future mma fights )
His takedown defense was fine
Just Randy is a good fighter and he’s a good boxer, he wants to do MMA.

I can't knock a guy from being easily taken down by Randy
Especially someone in their first MMA fight. So as one-sided as it was— and although I don’t expect Toney has any future whatsoever in MMA— I still think it could’ve been worse.
If i had money
i would have bet my friend whose a boxer. He had toney winning it lol i called choke by the end of the first.
damn my broke ass!
thank you, Randy!

I would argue that Shane was aready spent at that point in the fight.
And Brock has retarded gorilla strength.
But yes, Toney did good………

This fight set the UFC back IMO
And hurt it more than it helped it.
A case of Dana going for the short money and not seeing the long.

How did Randy beating Toney set the UFC back at all?
If anything, the way Toney sold this fight as MMA vs. Boxing, it would have been a damaging blow if a washed up boxer beat a former champion like Couture who’s probably not that far from contending for the LHW title again.
by Hardcase on Aug 29, 2010 1:02 AM EDT up reply actions 1 recs
Couture isn't a title contender anymore
Especially not in LHW. I mean yeah he beat Mark Coleman and Brandon Vera but neither of those guys are even close to Shogun/Rashad/Machida level.
He probably shouldn’t be, but the UFC loves giving him title shots, and not that far before Shogun got put on the shelf he was talking about he’d like to defend his title against Randy. It’s really not that unrealistic to think that Randy’s on Joe and Dana’s short list of people to fight for the 205 belt.

I know what you mean...
I was all pumped until just a few seconds after the bell rang. Something about the helplessness of Toney really made me feel bad for him…Then I remembered the article that says Toney’s making $750,000-$1,000,000 for this fight. Is hook off the sympathy and thought, “fuck him UP Randy!”

I hope Toney sticks around .....
and fights Cro Cop next.
He got owned by a grappler, now he needs to decapitated by a striker.
well, they both have the same command of the english language.

did anyone else hear randy say during the fight to toney after he almost tapped him to the arm triangle the first time and let him go " So You Don’t want to Tap" and then proceed to punch him in the face a few times before locking in the choke a second time.
I thought it was Awesome Randy really does do all his trash talking inside the cage

It was a novelty fight that the UFC pushed hard. But no one should be surprised by this outcome.
What would surprise me would be if anybody was surprised by this outcome.
No surprise at all.
I have been a boxing fan since birth but Toney didn’t have a prayer. It was cool seeing him step in there, but really, having superior stand-up skills rarely makes up for a complete MMA game.
Props to Toney for stepping up, Couture is the legend, I know a boxing rubber match will never happen unfortunately. I hope Toney chooses MMA again, maybe against a CroCop or Kongo maybe. I think stepping in against one of the greats in your first fight is incredibly difficult, nonetheless Toney ignorantly chose this so…. Yeah.
All and all UFC 118 was a sweet card.
I’m not sure there are any MMA fighters that think they could succeed in a boxing match.

They would definitely talk alot less smack walking in.
I like Fedor, it’s just his fans that are intolerable...and his management.
agreed!
The problem with some boxers’ mindset is they’ve been led to believe that Boxing is the ultimate combat martial art. There is no question that Elite Boxers are the best overpaid paid fighters without a doubt. Some in boxing associate the big paydays of the top fighters as some sort of sign that they are indeed the “baddest fighters on the planet”.

If Derek Jeter clubbed a baby seal on earth day while wearing a mink coat and crocodile skin boots while burning tires on an iceberg, the reaction would be "Its OK Derek, you’re a Yankee." -First mammal to wear pants
Toney
didn’t think he was going to win either. At his pre-fight presser, when informed he was a five to one underdog, he yelled at his boy to put a thousand dollars on himself.
Really? A guy who wears “100 grand” in jewelry was willing to drop ten bills on himself?
He would have come in wearing twenty pounds less if he was serious about winning. He knew he was getting a fat payday either way, and he looked like he was thinking “Let’s get this over”, at the ring intros.
James Toney actually verbally submitted to the first arm triangle, but Mario Yamasaki didn’t hear it and let it go on. He actually told Toney that if he wanted out, he needed to tap. The next time Randy got the arm triangle on him, Toney tapped the mat.

That’s sad. I kind of feel bad for James. I know he got himself into it, but like he had no clue what he was getting into. I don’t feel bad for him cause he lost, I just feel bad that a human being can be that ignorant and cocky. I truly hope he gives it another go and actually trains and learns the proper things he needs to learn to survive in the octagon because his shit-talking is worth waiting a few months to watch him fight.

James Toney just secured himself $750,000-$1,000,000 for this fight.
No need to feel bad for him. Looking back, I think James knew damn well he was going to lose. Just a great showman, and his bank account should be reflecting that nicely on Monday when the check clears. ;)
