UFC 118 Results: Demian Maia Works Mario Miranda for a Decision
Demian Maia couldn't finish Mario Miranda but he utterly dominated through three rounds to take a unanimous decision at UFC 118.
The only two Brazilians on the UFC 118 card fought one another when Demian Maia and Mario Miranda collided. It wasn't the most exciting fight as Demian Maia easily dominated the take downs and controlled position on the ground.
Maia was favored and dominated position for most of rounds one and two, but all four times he threatened submissions Miranda escaped.
Maia lost a title shot to Anderson Silva at UFC 112 and remains near the top of the 185lb Middleweight division.

I really respect Maia for working for submissions instead of maintaining control. Especially after watching Gray Maynard sit in Kenny’s guard. Maia failed those submissions and wound up on bottom or standing, but he tried to finish the fight.

Top 10 guy fails to finish
an unheralded late replacement?
I’d say maia had a hell of a lot more to lose even in victory than miranda had to win.
I say that as a BIG maia fan.
Train hard, fight smarter.
See what was noted re: Villasenor vs. Jacare
It can be really difficult to submit an opponent who is actively defending against submission attempts, even if the opponent’s losing the fight on position / points. From the play-by-play, it seems as if Maia also wasn’t varying or changing up his choice of submission, just “All Armbars All The Time.”
Dissapointing fight
A few minutes into the second round, I had the sudden and genuine realization that this fight was boring the hell out of me. All the energy from the Diaz/Davis fight left and I sat on my couch, surrounded by friends, sipping on my captain morgan, in silence. This is a case of Maia losing despite his win.
