UFC 118 Results: Gray Maynard Bullies Kenny Florian
Gray Maynard dominated Kenny Florian from bell to bell over three rounds and took a decision win in their lightweight title eliminator bout.
The two top ranked lightweight contenders in the UFC division met in Boston at UFC 118. It was a slow moving first round as they felt each other out standing. But finally with less than a minute left, Maynard shot in and got Florian to the ground. He added an extra punch after the bell too.
The second was another slow starting round. This time Maynard shot in closer to the two minute mark and put a bloodied Florian down. He quickly took side mount and battered Florian from top position.
In round three, more of the same again but Maynard took him down at the three minute mark. Maynard scored with ground and pound, Florian finally began going for submissions late in the round, working a guillotine then threatening an omaplata. Back on their feet he chased Maynard for the last few seconds to no end.

YAWN
Another boring wrestler. A great way to keep the sport from growing is to have more fights like that.
Couldnt agree more
Edgar vs Maynard better be a co-main event.
Confucius says:
"Baseball is wrong; man with four balls cannot walk."
The bottom line is, Kenny simply over-thinks things when the chips are down. Theres no way the guy who looked so dynamic against Joe Daddy and Gomi would simply stand in front of such a primitive fighter as Maynard for rounds at a time doing nothing. Its bizarre, especially given how the BJ fight went. Maybe just too smart for his own good………
Great (sarcasm)
Any PPV that Maynard main events, I’m not buying. There are wrestlers out there who can finish high level fighters. Maynard isn’t one of them. I want no part of another one of his borefests.

no, no
i don’t want shitty kickboxing. i want people who actively try to finish fights instead of just trying to control position for three rounds.

sure
and i’m not faulting him for winning, or having a superior skill with which to win.
i simply don’t care for the wet blanket tactic, and i refuse to watch him use it anymore. kind of a “voting with my dollars” thing, if that makes sense.

I see what you mean
but to me MMA is more sport than entertainment. I want to see who is the best, that is what is interesting. Oh well, I’ll be going stag to the John Fitch fanclub again.

i agree with the sport part
but entertainment is part of every (spectator) sport. and Maynard is not entertaining.

No one is asking for K-1, they are just asking for people to ATTEMPT to finish. Check out Lauzon’s performance tonight if you need a lesson on how its done.
Sure, he can sub florian, easy.
How do you finish that fight? Standing, in kenflo’s world, or threaten a sweep or a sub by posturing up to reign bombs or sub (lol) kenny?
his way to victory was to play it safe in kennys guard and score points. He shouldn’t have to take those risks to please people. He will pay when he is the LW champ and is a 0 draw, but he is the guy killin everyone else.

Who, exactly? Fitch? Sonnen? Rashad? Maynard? Sherk? Edgar? Aside from Brock and GSP, the vast majority of wrestlers dont even attempt to finish.
i was thinking Brock, GSP, hell -- even Randy
(see Gonzaga, Gabriel) … Matt Hughes had a strong string of finishes there for awhile, iirc. Carwin is another high-level wrestler, as is Cain Velasquez … so don’t act like all wrestlers are wet blankets. Like you said up the thread — I’m not asking for K-1. I would like to see people actually try to finish their opponent instead of lie on top of them.

Carwin went for the finish
did well for him.
Sometimes the smart thing to do in a BJJ blackbelts guard is play it safer.
that is, unless you are chael. then you get sh!t for it.

I agree completely. Thats why I will always love Randy, because the last 30 seconds of round 5 of the Sylvia fight, its in the bag, and what is he doing? Trying to posture up and drop bombs and FINISH THE FIGHT! Thats why Randy is co-maineventing at 87 years old and Maynard couldnt draw flies if he was lying dead on the side of the road.
Hell yeah
Kenny was JUST as responsible for that fight being “boring” as maynard. Stay out of his punching distance and you don’t throw a leg kick? He had since 2006 to learn from his first title shot and did not pull it out. You don’t fight maynard and complain about being laid on – you improve your game and come up with a good gameplan.
KenFlo had a poor gameplan going into the fight, he deserved to lose. He is an amazing fighter, one of the most well rounded in the sport, but give Maynard credit. He made him look like a fish.

Maynard definitely get credit. He’s not exciting but he defeated a very well rounded fighter in Florian.

Florian defeated Florian, just as he always his when the stakes are highest. Maynard came at him with a basic, MMA 101 gamplan that Kenny should have run circles around, and Kenny froze under the pressure.
uhmmm . . . ok. If you want to believe that then that’s cool. Personally I think he had a problem with a strong, great wrestler in MMA. The fact that he thought he could out wrestle Gray Maynard, speaks VOLUMES about Florian’s thought process.

And I QUOTE . . . I expect to outwrestle Gray Maynard -Kenny Florian
. . . like I said, not a real smart outlook or approach to a fight against Gray Maynard. Just because you train with GSP, does not mean jack. I don’t care how many wrestlers you train with that are 170lbs. and over. I don’t care if you train with Brock Lesnar . . .
Kenny can not over come Maynard’s years of experience.

Kenny chocked again, incredible this guy is becoming legendary for crapping out with ridiculous gameplans in all his big fights. Honestly i’m done with him, he might as well get ready for his second career because mentally he just can’t get over the hurdle what a disapointment.

Being a top 5 LW fighter is terrible
Yeah, he really should get a second career.
I agree.
Did he choke gainst BJ Penn? Or was it just that BJ – despite Edgars wins – is one of the best fighters of all time. And two decision losses to solid wrestlers? Have you watched any of his other fights? I assume all of the people he made look foolish – Gomi, Guida, Lauzon, Stevenson, Thomas, Stout… and there are more – should start looking for a second career too?
I just got back from a long, boring wedding...
and I am so happy I didn’t buy this fight, because I know it would have made me mad. Maynard is objectively boring and people who say different are kidding themselves.
Also let’s forever dispel the ridiculous argument that disliking Gray Maynard is the same thing as hating the ground game. Laying in guard and throwing ineffective punches is not a “ground game,” it’s a chickenshit stalling tactic that makes for awful viewing.
Tatum: I think he's a good man. I like him. I got nothing against him, but I'm definitely gonna make orphans of his children.
It’s also just a detriment to Maynard in that he really hasn’t shown any real improvement. It also brings up how the judging system works, and how highly or not highly takedowns should be judged in MMA when that takedown is not predicated by offense or very little offense. It makes it seem like Maynard is just winning by this loophole that being on top and “lying” on your opponent will win the fight for him.
This was the fight I was least confident about going in, yet I led myself to believe Kenny could have improved his takedown defense and BJJ enough to compensate for Gray’s wrestling. Guess not.
He deserves the shot after beating Florian. But I just can’t get myself excited about Maynard/Edgar II for the LW title.
Edgar-Maynard fight
The only good thing about this bout is the UFC will have to stack the card with big fights, or risk not doing even 350,000 PPV buys.

I hope Maynard at least bought Kennys leg some breakfast after all that humping.
