It wasn't pretty, but Nik Lentz used his control of the clinch on the feet and riding ability to snuff out Andre Winner's chances at UFC 118, winning a unanimous decision.
British The Ultimate Fighter finalist Andre Winner met Minnesota wrestler in the first show of Spike TV's Preliminary broadcast of UFC 118.
Initially it wasn't the sort of fight that Zuffa loves for a preliminary bout they're giving away to tease the pay per view. The first round was a mostly grinding affair with Lentz controlling position in the standing clinch, but unable to get a take down. The few moments he was free Winner scored with his hands and feet. Hard blows from the clinch and a vicious standing knee marked Lentz 'face when the round was over.
The second was more of the same with Lentz eating some shots but keeping it clinched up. He finally got a take down around the 1:45 mark but couldn't do much as Winner attempted fairly half assed submission attempts. Lentz nearly got a nice over the back slam while Winner appeared to be going for a head scissors. Neither man achieved their goal.
Winner came out aggressive in the third, firing with kicks and punches. But it didn't last long as Lentz again pushed him to the cage. Eventually he got back mount and then top half guard and worked for mount. Lentz showed the riding ability common to Minnesota wrestlers as Winner failed to escape his grind.
