That's the best fight on the card...any chance they broadcast the main event live?

YUS!

So glad they booked this fight. Its been a while since 85 has had a legit #1 contender fight. Hopefully the winner of this and the rematch aren’t too banged up afterwards. I’m pulling for an Okami v. Sonnen title fight.

It takes something like that to adjust his game.

Griffin = well rounded. Griffin loses to Dunham. Griffin now detests wrestling, one of his strongest assets. Griffin boxes with reckless abandon and gets knocked out (he was making Gomi look bad for a sec there). Now Griffin has lost on the ground and on the standup. I’m thinking he’s goes back to fighting smart now.

Losing to Gomi and losing to Dunham the way he did...

…doesn’t really take much away from the tools Griffin had before those fights. Before those fights, we’d say Griffin takes Siver easily. I still will say that.

And then God created Saturn... and he liked it, so he put a ring on it.
Twitter me and what not.

by James Brady on Aug 28, 2010 7:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Griffin's problem is he loooooooves to turn fights into Ultimate Kickboxing

And he can’t try that with Siver. He just can’t. Griffin has no knockout power (stopping Fat Franca doesn’t count) but he was able to win against guys that way because his opposition wasn’t that much better in that department (Aurelio, Tibau, Tavares, Guida, etc.)

Match him up against a contender and he can’t win.

Granted Siver is a gatekeeper at the moment but he is a very powerful and very big lightweight. Griffin can’t handle him.

I hate this fight from a marketing standpoint.

The deal with Vitor Belfort is this – he’s looked good lately, but at any point he could fall back into a slump. With a KO of Franklin you have to strike while the iron is hot. Giving him any other fight is just asking to kill his potential title shot. Add to that the fact that Okami is a terrible opponent for him. Okami’s methodical style can easily lead to him scoring a rather lackluster decision victory. If that happens, the end result is Belfort drops way down the ladder, and Okami is now set for a title shot, but is coming off another uninspired performance that no one is excited about.

If either one KO’s the other, this changes, but I think the chances of a dull Okami DEC are far greater.

If Belfort is smart, he’ll just use his patented “jump on back and try to upkick him to death for the whole fight” strategy he used on Saku.

Looking at his history, he typically does poorly against anyone that can take him down. I think Okami will win if he focuses on the ground game and I think Belfort will win if he can use his absurdly fast hands against Okami and get a tko/ko.

I love seeing two high level fighters going at it, but unless Vitor catches Okami with something, this isn’t going to be the most thrilling fight ever. It’s most likely going to be a 15 minute staring contest, or Okami working a conservative top game.

It’s still a fascinating matchup though. How does Vitor react to the long layoff and surgery? Does Okami come out more agressive, or does he revert back to his defense first mentality? Does Okami getting dropped by Mark Munoz give us some glimpse at what Vitor might be able to do?
