Quote of the Day: Kenny Florian: "I'm Honestly Going Out There With the Expectation to Outwrestle Gray" Maynard at UFC 118
Yeah, for sure. Chael is a phenomenal wrestler, as is Gray. Anderson certainly doesn't have the experience in wrestling like Chael, as I don't compared with Gray. But I think I have a lot of rest training partners that have helped me improve in that. I've been working on my wrestling and drilling very hard now for a couple years. I know I have the best sparring partner in the world to prepare for Gray, Georges St. Pierre. There's no way Gray is gong to be stronger than GSP. There's no way he's gonna be a better wrestler than Georges. He's not gonna be faster. He's not gonna be bigger. Those are all things I know I'm prepared for. Training with Georges has given me a lot of confidence going into this fight. Hopefully I can show my wrestling has improved tremendously. I'm honestly going out there with the expectation to out-wrestle Gray. I don't know if that's gonna happen, but my goal is to out-wrestle him.

That’s what I’m kind of expecting as well.
"I am a man who pisses largely and frequently, which they say is a sign of great mental activity" -Henry Miller-
Same. The way he threw around Stevenson was ridiculous. Maynard is miles ahead of Stevenson in the wrestling department but Kenny showed how much his strength and balance has really improved.
The other factor is Maynard’s odd fear of submission. Florian is probably as good with submissions as Diaz, and generally not known for as good boxing as Diaz. If Maynard thought standing with Diaz was the right decision, despite Stevenson manhandling Diaz, he’d probably think the same about Florian.
Man, I think that’s a real dumb approach.
We remember when Koscheck wanted to surprise everyone and stand with GSP?

that doesn't sound quite right
Koscheck didn’t want to “surprise” everyone.
Instead, it expressed an arrogance at the very idea that GSP could outwrestle him. And, in fact, I believe that was a historical MMA moment, as it was the last time the general MMA fanbase believed that GSP would be outwrestled.
In any event, I don’t necessarily see arrogance in Kenny’s statements, just a willingness to try and surprise everyone. I’ll admit that he surprised the hell out of me outwrestling Guida. Do I believe he can repeat that feat vs. Maynard? Not necessarily, but I’m excited as hell to see him try.
He hasn't even said that he'll go in with
The intention of out wrestling Maynard, but rather, expressed his opinion that, if the fight does hit the ground, he believes he will have the upper hand. I don’t see what’s so dumb about that.

Personally I don’t care how long Randy Couture trained striking, nor his amateur boxing background but Couture has no intention of trading blows with James Toney. Why? That’s his best asset.
While it is cool that Florian is confident in. his wrestling, I simply would avoid the ground game unless he’s on top about to submit Maynard.
I recall Florian talking about beating the Master but I never saw him try to take down BJ Penn and submit him with a jiu-jitsu submission.

It will definitely be cool to watch him attempt.
It would be cool to see him attempt a double or single leg on Maynard. I’ll be shocked.

I don’t think he will. Maybe if there’s a really obvious opportunity for a TD he’ll take it but that’s about it.
Side note—Just because you train with GSP does not mean you wrestle like GSP kinda tired about hearing people talk up their skills based on their training partners. Are we to believe your stuffing GSP’s takedowns, Kenny?
Goldberg on Leben: One thing's for sure--he really did break that door on the Ultimate Fighter.
Rogan: uh...yeah.

No, did you understand what I said?!? I not only train with GSP, he told me my wrestling is very good. GSP said I am prepared and he’s impressed with my improvement!!!
GSP also told him that he would do well against BJ Penn.

What?
I don’t understand your attitude. Why is Florian simply saying thathe trains with GSP in some way a form of attention seeking arrogance?
It is surely true that such training will have helped his wrestling a great deal, and supplied him with a clear indicator of his own ability.

I’m having fun with with his statement because after all GSP is the absolute GOD of Wrestling for MMA. Not for nothing the name GSP comes out of his mouth often.
My attitude? . . . hmmm . . . uhhh ok. I didn’t know my statement was that serious.

Attitude in the sense of stance
As opposed to, “son, I don’t like your attitude”.

Because it's not just with this statement
Florian has a tendency to constantly slobber all over GSP’s knob in certain interviews.
Josh Barnett is a thrice proven juicer with a pro wrestling mindset and a personality that would lead you to believe he's never had a romantic encounter that didn’t start with "you gotta pay me upfront."
If he does, this will prove conclusively
that you can become an effective MMA wrestler in a relatively short period of time.

Well, not everyone. Kenny strikes me as a fairly intelligent individual.
I’m more impressed with his striking improvement after going to TriStar. It’s not often that you see a seasoned fighter become so much crisper in his striking technique. Who would have thought switching away from Dellagrotte would pay so many dividends.

I'm not a Kenny fan,
but that’s a smart dude. He thinks through fights well and knows what he has to do. That said I hope Gray wins, he is the more interesting fight for BJ or Frankie.
You don't think...
Florian v Edgar would be amazing?
Interesting.
I like Fedor, it’s just his fans that are intolerable...and his management.
Kenny kenny kenny....
Hey I got an idea, lets abandon our strengths. Kongo, i want you to try to take down cain once you stand back up. Kenny, work takedowns on BJ for four rounds. Great job, keep it up.
Over here, I want sean sherk to work his gogo T-Rex arms against someone with 6 inches of reach on him. I want you to do that a few times, actually. I know wrestling got you the belt, but it doesnt touch the allure of ultimate kickboxing. You too, Gray, throw some leather against Huerta and Diaz. Lets make sure these wins aren’t convincing.

Also, the height difference seemed pretty minimal at the weigh-ins.
