Fighter Self-Analysis: Mark Munoz Speaks on the Yushin Okami Fight
This evening I got to publish my first interview ever over at Watch Kalib Run, which featured Mark Munoz. I sought to speak with Munoz because I felt I had a few good questions that I haven't seen asked, and the opportunity was given to me to speak with him. The immediate question that I had in mind while going into the interview...
Kaleb Kelchner: Do you feel you've come out of the Okami fight knowing what you did wrong, and need to improve on? If so, what did you see in yourself that needed improvement?
Mark Munoz: I came away from the Okami fight a much better fighter. I didn't have the confidence in my hands that I should have. I need to believe in my hands, strike more, and setup my leg shots better by exploding to the finish and not stopping.
Looking back, doing a bit of self-analysis of my own, this question was a little more harsh than I really intended it to come out as. Lucky for me, Munoz is a great guy, and he returned an awesome answer here. The biggest issue I had seen in the Okami fight was that he wouldn't drive through to finish the take down. I think everyone saw that the lack of explosiveness and pushing through to finish the take down caused a lot of problems in the fight for Munoz. Good for Munoz that "everyone" includes himself, and his team. Some fighters will hash out an excuse, or just say that it was their opponent's night, but Munoz shows that he can look at his performance and learn from it. Thats a skill that translates to many more situations than just a fight. Giving an honest evaluation of yourself isn't always easy, especially when you didn't come out on top in that situation. Munoz earned a lot of respect from me in our interview, much of which came from the above passage.
We also discussed his fight with Kendall Grove in Abu Dhabi at UFC 112, his training at Black House, and why he believes wrestling is the best base for MMA. You can check out the interview, in full, here.

Took a bit of advice from the last time I cross posted some stuff, hope this approach feels less “CLICK ME!”, and more, if this interests you, check it out. And input in regards to the interview is certainly appreciated.

I like it.
and no it didn’t look like a “click me” post… I actually had a bit of trouble looking for the link at first. hahaha.

Someone suggested previously to take a selection of the piece, discuss it, then link the whole thing…not really ideal for a piece that is already about dishing out an opinion, but it worked real good in an interview situation. I’ve got a few more I’m working on as well…exciting stuff. :)

Plus, it gets a bit weird when you’re summarizing, and quoting, then giving even additional input, to YOUR own opinion right? haha. :)

Nice interview Kaleb.
I think Munoz can be good, but he has to work on his striking offense and defense in addition to not being so predictable with his takedowns.
I’d do Munoz vs. Aaron Simpson.

If you hate Munoz thats a good fight
Munoz looked god awful in his last 2 fights. I saw the shots coming from Munoz in the Okami fight from the prelims

Stylistically they're similar
They both hate striking defense, they are wrestlers, but have KO power.

I'll give you that
Simpson takes it thought. Agreed?

Yeah Simpson would probably take it
It’d make for a good fight on Spike.
