My research into this Saturday’s bout between James “Lights Out” Toney and Randy “The Natural/Captain America” Couture has brought some interesting thoughts to mind I would like to share with some of my Bloody Elbow brethren. Now ever since the days of UFC 8 to a large extent Wrestlers have ruled the roost so to speak. I have seen and heard so many people talk about the importance of cross training, Such as a Solely Muay Thai fighter would not fare well against even a mediocre Striker/wrestler (see Thiago Alve’s last two fights that’s not to sday GSP is a mediocre Striker or wrestler for that matter). With guys such as George St. Pierre absolutely Destroying Thiago Alves and Dan Hardy. Now the thought’s that were brought to mind with this Saturday’s bout were Memory’s of UFC 112’s bout between Anderson Sliva and Demian Maia. In which we saw a far superior submission specialist not only Out classed but absolutely mocked by a Far superior striker.
In that particular fight we saw Demian Maia Struggling to even get inside the Range of Anderson Silva for fear of suffering the fate of a Forrest Griffin or a James Irvin, and the list goes on, However I don’t believe the Lack on Demian Maia’s part wasn’t solely his Striking (although that was an obvious problem in that particular fight), I believe his real and biggest Flaw is his lack of takedown ability. As we all saw all Six Hundred Thousand of us at UFC 117 was that Anderson’s Ability to stuff takedowns is His Achilles’ heel. Since that fight the Fans have been clamoring and saber rattling even more for a GSP super fight as that revelation would actually give us the thought that GSP held a good chance of winning that fight. My question would be what if Chael Sonnen instead of just Relying on his wrestling, in that fight at UFC117 he had the Submission abilities of a Demian Maia or a Rousimar Palhares, Or even worse a submission specialist such as Fabricio Werdum or Antonio Noguiera had the Takedown ability, and top control of GSP or Cain Velasquez or Brock Lesnar?
Now the thoughts brought to mind as I am sure has been said many times on this blog before what if a fighter were to not just stop at Cross training striking and grappling but were to analyze and become the most well rounded grappler? If you have a guy who’s Takedown’s You can’t Stuff and who’s top control you can’t reverse as we saw at UFC 117 it’s really hard to knock someone out when you can’t stay on your feet. ive heard Joe rogan say many times and I agree “ Wrestling is the best base to come in to MMA with. ‘ But what if it didn’t stop at wrestling what if GSP incorporated Judo Throws and Greco Roman Clinch/ trips? What kind of a Freak Fighter would you have if you had a guy who Double legs you could stuff but who would then just judo throw you in to third row of seats ( see pre pill popping carl parysian). IM Not saying that GSP isn’t well rounded and that he may not some day be just what I’m talking about or Cain Velaquez or Even for that matter B.j. Penn or Frankie Edgar. Now this Saturday when I set down in my comfy couch with my remote and my Humble Yet large television to take in the joys of watching a Boxer get Slammed on his back and Hopefully either pounded out or submitted. Later that night ill jump on bloody elbow and read all the comment’s of James Toney just didn’t have any grappling skills, And ill sit and day dream of a world where a Takedown artist such as GSP has the top control of a Jake Shield and the Guard Subbing abilities of a Demian Maia and Fabricio Werdum.
Alas for yonder Takedown’s stuffed But Yet do Judo throws insue!! By the ways in the Comment section please be gentle!
