Quote of the Day: Antonio "Big Foot" Silva: Fedor Emelianenko and Strikeforce Champ Alistair Overeem "Are Not Deserving of My Respect"

Photo via DREAM

"I come from Paraiba, in Brazil, where we don't back down from things! I'll fight whoever they put in front of me; you will never see me picking and choosing opponents.

"It's sad when the heavyweight champion starts whining that he will only fight this guy or that. What kind of a professional is this guy? He is the champ, isn't he? Why be afraid to fight me?

"And Fedor, one of the biggest legends in the sport. Is this how he got to be a legend, by declining fights?

"I never disrespect any opponent, no matter what his record is or what the public thinks about him. To me, he merits respect just for stepping up there and facing off, but these guys are disappointing me. They are demonstrating that they are not deserving of my respect.

"We are fighters, supposed to be some of the best in the world, and our job is to get up there, perform, and put on a good fight for the fans. I am ready to do this, just tell me who is next and I will be there. I am not a woman who wants to be involved in soap operas, looking forward to the next episode. I think that Strikeforce needs to put an end to this. Give me whoever and I will fight him, and, win or lose, people will know I came to fight that day and put my heart into it. To me, this is the only way."

Antonio "Big Foot" Silva in a statement released to MMA Profit Advisor. HT MMA Mania

Waaah waaah

“Why won’t the champion fight me? I deserve a title shot”

:“Why won’t Fedor fight me? I”m relevant" I mean I just beat a top 10 fighter…well never. Ok, I beat a top 20 fighter…right? No? I beat Arlovski, that should count Brett Rogers got a shot."

Shut up cheater.

But I agree with his point about fighters and their BS. Especially in an organization like Strikeforce that has limited options. Say what you want about Dana, but his fighters don’t speak out like this and give the impression that people are avoiding fights. He leaves that up to the speculating media and fans.

Might wanna double check that whole "top 20" thing

since Arlovski is still a top 20 heavyweight based on the most recent consensus rankings. I guess having a top heavy division in the UFC is enough to make people forget how shallow the heavyweight division still is.

Junior is getting a title shot based on beating Roy Nelson

who is the most recent win of that guy who was on a 2 fight skid.

Heavyweight is a shitty division. Picking apart records doesn’t work too well there.

based on the result of the tests. They looked at the two separate tests and downed the appeal. What more do you want?

Its a desease that affects your harmone levels. You’d have to be completely insane to take steroids with such a condition. They probably would destroy your body rather than act as a performance enhancer.

The CSAC is known for being awful at their jobs. The positive was much more likely bc of him having Acromegaly, its obvious. They just dont really care.

If the Acromegaly caused the positive then it should of been easy for his lawyer to prove, instead they tried to blame a supplement that he took that is supposed to cause false positives, only they couldn’t actually prove he took it. They also tried to enter their own drug test as evidence but the dumb ass lawyer couldn’t show a chain of custody(the same lawyer that argued that Sherk’s positive test was invalid due to problems with the chain of custody). Whether he was guilty or not he sure failed to prove anything at all during the hearing and I’m not sure if they even brought up Acromegaly with the commission. Dude tested positive, dude’s hearing defense was a complete joke and he would of lost his appeal in any state, dude stopped fighting it and went to Japan to fight, end of story.

I’m sure there are plenty of SF heavyweights that want to fight him, but he’d turn them down because he feels he is obviously better than them – he might feel that fighting them does nothing for his career. An argument could be made that Fedor and Overeem are obviously better than Silva.

Not saying I completely disagree with Silva, but the perception exists.

Fedor and Overeem will only fight Werdum, Werdum is out until 2011, and Bigfoot just fought Werdum and wants to fight anybody else. It’s a vicious cycle.

God bless the UFC,

Well Fedor will fight Overeem, but Overeem has flip flopped and now will only fight Fedor after he beats Silva, who he doesn’t want to fight himself.

It’s nice being in a position of power. Dana can do what he wants. Coker, OTOH, has to kiss up to these guys or they’ll leave for the UFC.

by Mint on Sep 2, 2010 11:26 PM EDT up reply actions

This right here.

I agree. At some point Scott Coker has to take control and demand they fight who he tells them. If they won’t then let them set on the sidelines for the rest of their contract and then let them walk. There is a time to be flexible and work with people but sometimes you just have to take control and make things happen.

Just BE.

by mattman73 on Aug 27, 2010 1:13 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t see how Coker has any leverage. I’m not sure about Silva but the other two seem happy with fighting in Japan.

by Rufford on Aug 27, 2010 2:16 PM EDT up reply actions

But that's exactly the problem.

A promoter who simply cannot get a fight done isn’t promoting. A fight of some kind needs to happen or it becomes clear that Coker has no control or influence over his contracted fighters. It becomes a question to the legitimacy of the leadership of the promotion. He needs to find a way – flatter, beg, compromise, get creative, toss suitcases of horse meat through someone’s window – to get a fight done or his heavyweight division becomes irrelevant.

his quote is more cultural than anything else

he says he’s not a woman who (as in which) watches soap operas and is looking forward to the next episode. In Brazil, the biggest part of the demographic for soap operas are the female population, not all women watches them, but the ones that do watches them religiously. He’s not saying all women watches soap opera (nor that men don’t watch them either), he’s saying he’s not like the women that watches them religiously.

Big Foot wants in

He’s trying to drum up some attention for himself, which I totally understand. Recently its been all Overeem and Fedor in this thing with a splash of Werdum. Big Foot has been mentioned a few times, but I don’t blame him for trying to get some attention on himself.

That aside, I think a Fedor v Big Foot fight is a great matchup, and whoever wins that should be in strong line for a shot at Werdum, possible. However, if Werdum heals up, he should probably go against Overeem. We’ll see what happens I guess, but Big Foot is a solid fighter so I’ll be paying attention.

Antonio is right. Also, I can’t blame him for saying this because he is really hitting his stride in MMA right now, and he obviously wants some big matchups. To be honest, Antonio Silva vs Overeem or Fedor doesn’t sound too bad right now considering how hard it is for Strikeforce to put together big Heavyweight fights. If Antonio Silva fought Del Rosario or Rogers, at this point in time, I’d be satisfied.
