Spencer Fisher was arrested on Tuesday in his hometown of Bettendorf, Iowa for interfering with an official's duties. He paid $300 bail and was released on his own recognizance. MMA Junkie spoke with his management:

"Spencer went to pick up his daughters from school, and he doubled parked because there were no other parking spaces available," Dubberly stated in an email to MMAjunkie.com. "The police asked Spencer to move his car, and Spencer stated he would only be a second. The police asked him again to move his car, and Spencer kept proceeding to pick up his daughters from school."

Well with that attitude I can see how you'd be so well liked by the public at large.

Maybe when somebody like you breaks into your parents house and assaults your mom, the police will be welcome to help her? Maybe you still live with her. I hate blanket statements like FTP. Never forget the ONLY thing separating society from degenerating into what New Orleans became is the cops. There are many more good ones than bad ones.

The trade off is that half the places that would be patrolled by police in the States or Canada are patrolled by the military in the UK. Airports, many train stations, lots of public places in London like Trafalgar Square, all are patrolled by meathead soldiers with assault weapons.

Don’t get me wrong, I like that too. I’ve just had enough run-ins with British, Canadian and American police officers (not necessarily on the wrong side of the law – I’m the son of a police officer and have spent most of my life around them) to see that none of them are generally different than each other. Like any sufficiently large group of people, there will be people who go above and beyond to be considerate and do good that is not in their job description, and there will be assholes who abuse their power and position for some end, regardless of whether or not they can justify it to themselves or others. There are lots of ways that police can and do abuse their power in the absence of the threat of a firearm, just like there are lots of ways that some police go to great lengths to protect members of the public even without the backup of a firearm.

The problem with policing in general is that the assholes who abuse their power have a far greater ability to do so than most any other group of people, and there has never been a bureaucratic-oversight solution to the problem of police abuse of power. Again, that’s not to universally slam all police, but to say that asshole police can and do get away with a lot, which if nothing else is a reason to maintain a safe distance and suspicious disposition towards most police. That being said, politeness and reasonableness tends to go a long way towards not getting cuffed, thumped or arrested; but I try to be reasonable and polite to everyone, regardless of whether or not they have a badge.

Most FTP people are scum bags that are always in trouble and the cops get in the way of them stealing or beating the shit out of some other citizen. I had a run in over a pit bull attack and my neighbors boyfriend(please see life long criminal loser) kept making references to the local PD as — finest. Very sarcastic. He’s a druggy loser who bangs a lady across the street and has no real job ever. I told him they got a hard job where they get called to a guy with a gun. If I’m responding to that, my thinking is guns out and ready too. Criminals will always hate the cops so to the criminals I say go lock up. I would say both. They are serving the law abiding citizens (the ones parked legally) by making sure they aren’t obstructed (trapped) by (illegally parked) double parkers, which is basically protecting them from the double parkers, or being trapped.

They close crack houses that house low lifes that also hate cops. Cops write tickets, and arrest when a guy blows .30 and just killed a car full of people. You sound like a criminal type to me.

Agreed.

I’m actually a pretty big fan of Spencer’s, but it’s his fault plain and simple.

I fucking hate people who double park. I hate all these fucking people without basic common courtesy and respect for basic guidelines we all should be following to avoid uncomfortable or dangerous situations. Spence knows double parking is illegal. Cop told him to move, he didn’t, most likely mouthed off to the cop, and got busted. Sounds about right to me. I bet he was the only one double parked too. I fucking hate that sense of entitlement.

Consider the scenario where another parent at the school gets a call and their family member just got in an accident, their house is on fire, etc. They rush to their car to get to the emergency situation, but lo and behold, they’re blocked in by Spencer’s car. Meanwhile, Spencer’s in his kids classroom, chatting it up with the teacher about his kids’ performance, etc., all the while oblivious to the fact that he’s preventing someone from getting somewhere they need to be. Doesn’t even need to be an emergency, maybe just an important appointment, or maybe they just don’t want to be trapped in their parking space while some douchebag is off somewhere doing God knows what. The person who parked properly and legally should not have to suffer ANY inconvenience just because someone thought they were above the rules. Fuck that. I’m glad he got popped. Maybe no he won’t pull that shit anymore.

[disclaimer : my block is littered with double parkers and every day I have to drive a fucking slalom just to get to my place. Might have something to do with my perspective. ;)]

It's more the lack of consideration towards others that pisses me off.

It’s not confined to double parkers. This type of selfish/entitled behavior is far to prevalent in our society (American, not too sure about other cultures) and it just sucks, and can often times be dangerous and/or detrimental. The scenario I offered above is a realistically possible scenario, but too many people just don’t get it or care.

There are far too many negative issues in our daily life that could be avoided if more people would just step out of their bubbles and realize that we all have to share this place. I consider myself a pretty considerate person, and I hate the fact that I put in so much effort, only to see others completely disregard basic manners & courtesies that would benefit everyone.

I may be a bit uptight or overzealous regarding this subject, and I’ve been working on it. There’s a cool prayer that says :

“God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.”

I’m still working on the serenity part. :P

But for now, I still think ol’ Spence reaped what he sewed. (has sown?)

Have you ever seen an elementary school when kids are getting out? Double parking is completely normal, nobody complains, everyone is a parent picking their child up (which only takes a few seconds so double parking is no big deal) Some cops just like to be dicks and abuse their powers. You sound like you live in a fuckin bubble.

by ontite on Aug 26, 2010 8:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Um...yeah....
Have you ever seen an elementary school when kids are getting out?

For starters, I used to live across the street from an elementary school and there was no double parking allowed so no one did it. If you did, you got a ticket. Pretty standard stuff…

You sound like you live in a fuckin bubble.

I live in the heart of Hollywood, Ca., which is pretty fucking far from a bubble. I deal with double parking every. motherfucking. day. I don’t give a fuck if there’s no parking available. Get there early or bite the fucking bullet and circle the block til you find a spot. It’s not my fault you had kids, can’t make it there early enough to get a good spot, or can’t be bothered with circling the block. No one should suffer any inconvenience as a result of your choices. And even easier, just stay in your car and let your kids come to you. That’s normal where I’m from. That way, you can still double park, and if you do end up blocking someone in, you can easily let them out, and have a parking spot at the same time. Brilliant!

Some cops just like to be dicks and abuse their powers

True, and some citizens just like to be dicks (which is most likely the case in Spencer’s situation, hence the arrest). Or they’re too self absorbed or have an unrealistic sense of entitlement. Like I said before, I don’t give a fuck if all the other people at the school are doing it. It doesn’t necessarily make it right. If all the other kids jumped off a bridge, would you do it too?

Basically, I live by the Golden Rule. If I can circle the block a few times til I get a spot to avoid putting someone in a situation where they’re trapped in their spot, then God Dammit I expect that everyone else has the same capabilities (handicapped excluded). It’s a matter of basic respect for one another, something that I see lacking on a daily basis.

Sounds to me like you might be one of those people. I hope I’m wrong though. :)

I take that back.

You don’t sound like you live in a bubble, you just sound like a very miserable guy who hates the world. Double parking to pick up your child literally only takes a minute, nobody would be bothered by that. I live in Brooklyn NY, and if somebody like you tried to argue with someone who double parked, then the person who they double parked in front of would take their side.

Double parking in front a car for a long occasion is a different story and nobody likes that, but to pick up your child is nothing. and if anything you’re still in your car and you can move out of the fucking way if the person you’re blocking asks. It takes a minute for crying out loud.

by ontite on Aug 27, 2010 1:26 AM EDT up reply actions

The point is that this is one side of a story

Written by Spencer’s management who are trying to make this appear to be a case of cops messing with their client. Most likely he wasn’t arrested for the act of double parking or telling the cops “I’ll move my car in a minute”. If you asked witnesses or the cops it was most likely a case of someone mouthing off to police and the cops using that as a reason for arresting an individual. If I’m a cop I’m doing the same thing as being a professional fighter doesn’t get you out of being a dick.

Not really, just the habitually stupid, ignorant, selfish and disrespectful.

Double parking to pick up your child literally only takes a minute, nobody would be bothered by that.

I wouldn’t go so far as to say nobody would be bothered by that, but point taken. My original rant on double parkers was aimed more towards situations other than picking kids up from school, but I suppose I didn’t clarify that enough in the beginning. Either way, like I said before, I lived across the street from an elementary school and we never had that problem.

I live in Brooklyn NY, and if somebody like you tried to argue with someone who double parked, then the person who they double parked in front of would take their side.

Someone like me, huh? First of all, you don’t know me. It’s pretty bold of you to speak as though you do. And secondly, why would I be arguing with someone (double parker) on someone else’s (double park victim) behalf? What business is it of mine?

Double parking in front a car for a long occasion is a different story and nobody likes that…

Yeah, that was kinda my point. I’m glad we’re in agreeance. :)

…but to pick up your child is nothing. and if anything you’re still in your car and you can move out of the fucking way if the person you’re blocking asks.

See, this is the kinda thing I’m talking about. It’s obvious you only skimmed my comments, otherwise you would have read this :

And even easier, just stay in your car and let your kids come to you. That’s normal where I’m from. That way, you can still double park, and if you do end up blocking someone in, you can easily let them out, and have a parking spot at the same time. Brilliant!

sorry, yeah, i did skim through. i got the impression that you didnt care if somebody was picking up their child, if they double parked you got pissed. Glad you clarified. People who don’t care about children or what ever happened in this instance piss me off, i got the impression you were one of those people.

People who carelessly double park do get on my nerves. but i’ll tolerate it if it’s for a minute. Even if it didn’t go down like Spencers manager stated, its still easy to see a cop being a dick and telling him to move and spencer simply being stubborn.

by ontite on Aug 28, 2010 4:11 AM EDT up reply actions

Cool man

Yeah, I mean, if someone’s still in their car, I don’t really consider it double parking. Also, even though I don’t have kids, I used to be one, and I absolutely believe that it is crucial to treat them well and teach them properly in order for our world to continue to progress.

And dude, I was definitely being a bit dramatic and exaggerated my loathing (I don’t really hate anyone), but if you knew how much I have to deal with double parking on my block, you’d get a good sense of my perspective. At any given time, you’ll see at least 3-6 cars double parked. I’ll drive to the market for something, and see the same cars in the same spots when I get back 20-30 minutes later! Un-ac-ceptable. :P

Anyways, I’m glad we were able to clear things up. That’s what I love most about this site, the quantity of quality people. On a lot of sites, people don’t take the time to actually dialogue, it usually just turns into a flame war or a whos-dick-is-bigger contest. right,

my take is is, he was trying to be an ass and arguing with the law, and the whole thing just escalated from there,

if that’s the case, then it serves him right

For fucking double parking?

In no way does that constitute getting arrested. At most that warrents a ticket.

YEAH! I’ll bet he didn’t get rowdy or use the word “mother fucker” a single time. This is an outrage!

Possible...

That isn’t how it is worded above though.

by DCJon. on Aug 26, 2010 4:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Do you really think...

That a citizen should be arrested for getting excited and possibly cussing at a police officer? It should be remembered that they are civil SERVANTS and not royal LORDS. Judging by all available facts he did nothing violent toward the cop and didn’t even resist the ridiculous arrest.

Exactly

Most people who are picking up their kids get THERE EARLY enough to park normally. Ever wonder what happens when a fire truck has to go through that street or answer a call at the school with Fishers car blocking shit? Yeah, it slows down the response and somebody maybe dies. Get a clue cop haters, you’re probably the same people that are doing felonies all the time and when a cop stops you, you think it’s harassment. Prisons are full of cop hating scum bags, I’m surprised to see so many haters on this site. Wtf happened to honor in the martial arts? I guess the crowd it’s attracting is getting more and more stupid.

i know! seeing that as an impressionable teenager probably had way more of an impact on me than it should have.

Trite but true....

Getting in a pissing match with a cop is like harrassing a skunk. You may be right, technically or otherwise, but you’re still going to come out the stinking loser.

Damn

if theres anything i hate more than douche cops are even douchier security guards. They seem to look like they enjoy tazing him.

Fisher is notorious

for having run ins w/the police. He once decided not to wear a seatbelt and got a hefty fine b/c of it. He’s just one of the many bad apples in MMA. so done w/it

Spencer better have done something really stupid

Because double parking should not constitute an arrest, especially when it only takes minutes to pick up your daughters from school. Give him a ticket or something.

Who arrests someone for double parking?

The city must need the revenue. What a waste of time.

by pud333 on Aug 26, 2010 5:42 PM EDT reply actions

I live in the Quad Cities. Specifically Davenport, Ia. Bettendorf is our neighbor city. The cops are such dicks there i refuse to even go into that city. They have absolutely nothing to do crime-wise, so they are uber-anal about everything. Fuck Bettendorf, IA and their police dept.

This is no big deal.

Spencer was prolly acting like a dick and some cop decided to dick him over……just a couple of dicks getting in a dick measuring contest like dicks like to do………………..what a dick.

My two cents....

I believe he was arrested for interfering with official business. The policeman was exercising discretion by asking him to move his car and not just writing a ticket. It is a pretty dickish move to not just move your car. I will say though, I do not have any details to make a true opinionated statement, just wanted to clarify the first part.

Good, bad... I'm the guy with the gun.

Best statement so far. Rec'd.

Nice and simple, straight to the point. Should be easy as pie, but for some reason, some people just don’t seem to get it.

But if a man is picking up his child let him be there for a minute. It’s not hard to get stubborn and angry in those instances. Unless you’re a coward.

by ontite on Aug 27, 2010 1:37 AM EDT up reply actions

So..

let every other parent do the same thing. Park their car up front because they will just be a minute. I take my kid to school. You think there is ample parking available? Hell no. I walk my ass up to the school from about 2 blocks away. Fuck he is a MMA fighter. Could have been a warm-up exercise.

by Crazynutts on Aug 30, 2010 1:18 PM EDT up reply actions

It’s not hard to imagine a scenario where a guy who fights for a living thinks he’s a tough guy and isn’t gonna listen to someone telling him to move his car, even if said person is a police officer. I agree that some cops can be dicks sometimes but there was probably a good reason Fisher got arrested here, I doubt cops hang out around elementary schools just looking for reasons to arrests parents in front of their children.

by ufc4 on Aug 27, 2010 12:24 AM EDT reply actions

Him even trying to argue at all is pretty silly. “hey guys, I know you’re law enforcement officers and all, and what I’m doing right in front of you is totally illegal, but if I promise to only do it for a second that’ll be alright won’t it?”

by MMAussie on Aug 27, 2010 12:30 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, and I highly doubt he was anywhere near that nice.

by ufc4 on Aug 27, 2010 12:43 AM EDT up reply actions

Probably more along the lines of “Fuck you guys, I ain’t goin nowhere! Do u know who the fuck I am, I knocked out Matt Wiman!”

by MMAussie on Aug 27, 2010 12:53 AM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

or the cop just could have been a serious dick.

Watch some youtube videos of cops roughing up 13 year old kids for skating in no skating zones. A normal person working as that cop would have been like “oh, you’re picking up your child, i’ll give you a minute”. It’s called being humane.

by ontite on Aug 27, 2010 1:34 AM EDT up reply actions

Weird how so many people here feel that if you break the law the police, who’s job it is to enforce the law, have no business doing so.

This fuck the police shit is stupid too because it’s not that some cops are assholes. It’s that some PEOPLE are assholes.
