Strikeforce Champ Alistair Overeem Declines Fedor Emelianenko Bout for K-1, DREAM.17 Cancelled

Photo

Oh lordy, it just gets worse. Here's Alistair Overeem talking to Ariel Helwani:

Ariel Helwani: Have you decided when and where your next fight will be?
Alistair Overeem: Yes, I'm going to fight in the K-1 tournament, so my first fight will be October for the Final 16 in Korea. If I win the fight, I will advance to the Final 8 in Japan. That fight will be in December.

Why isn't your next fight going to be for Strikeforce?
I've stated many times that Strikeforce was my number one priority, but after Fedor lost to Werdum, I had no intention of fighting somebody other than Werdum. I came to the States to challenge the winner of the fight and that was Werdum, so no need to fight somebody else. Furthermore, I like K-1 very much and there are not many opportunities to stay fighting in K-1, so I want to fight if I still can. One of my goals is to be K-1 champion and this is my chance.

He also discusses his feelings about Fedor's manipulative management and has some serious praise for "another big MMA organization in the States". Read the whole thing.

Meanwhile, Dave Walsh at Head Kick Legend breaks the news from FEG:

...we spoke with FEG USA's Mike Kogan this afternoon and it turns out that DREAM.16 is the last DREAM event for a while. The next MMA event you can expect from FEG is Dynamite!! 2010, which is set to go on as scheduled. As for what happens from there, there is no word yet and will most likely rely on television ratings from DREAM.16 and Dynamite!! as well as how the arrangement with PUJI works out.

The future of K-1 MAX in 2010 is as foggy as ever, though, as Kogan knew of no dates for the K-1 MAX tournaments for the rest of the year. Logistically, this would all have to happen very soon as last year the Final 16 was April, Final 8 was July and the Finals were October. With all of the fighters tied up already, I have very little hope of this going off as planned.

Our own Chris Nelson wanted me to note:

It's worth noting that DREAM.17 was never formally announced, and DREAM didn't run any shows in November or Dececember of 2009 either. Big news is really K-1 MAX cancellation. However, DREAM did run six shows in both '08 and '09, and only four this year.

DREAM.16 is on TBS back-to-back with the Kameda boxing match in September, so chances are they'll pull some okay residual ratings there, maybe even enough to survive for a few more shows in 2011.

Dave Walsh at Head Kick Legend talks to Overeem's manager Bas Boon:

In regards to GG and Overeem "ducking" the Olympic Style drug testing, "all bullsh*t" was Boon's response. They will submit to drug tests like every other fighter on the card, which means they also are against certain fighters having certain treatment.

According to Boon, M-1 Global has no intentions of putting together an Alistair Overeem vs. Fedor Emelianenko bout according to their timeline of "late November or early December." M-1 Global is currently putting together a fight against Josh Barnett at Dynamite!! 2010 at the end of December, according to Boon, and this seems like a desperation move by M-1 Global management now that their negotiation tactics of the past (stalling, demanding more money, threatening lawsuits, etc.) have been exposed and cannot hold up. So it seems that calling out Overeem for a fight in Strikeforce was a negotiation tactic to help grease the wheels on the possible Barnett fight.

He went away for awhile but came back and made himself completely available only to get the run around from all parties involved.

My favorite thing about this is the future Overeem vs. Werdum rematch.

Their first fight was a good match of mid-high level guys. The rematch is the best grappler in the division vs. the best striker in the division… and both guys are at least competent in the other’s domain. Not sure who I’d pick in that matchup. I fucking love this sport.

I give Overeem a slight edge. Based purely on my gut.

I don’t care who fights who first, but I can appreciate wanting to see Overeem vs. Fedor, since the no. 2 contender is injured. Overeem probably just wants to focus on K-1, and his statements about Fedor needing to go through Bigfoot are just a convenient reason not to fight until 2011.

Don't forget that Werdum backed away from rematch promise

After the fight he said he would fight him in Mother Russia. A few weeks later his manager said there is no upside to fighting Fedor unless M-1 pays him a ton. Adding Overeem’s manager to the mix and his comments about Fedor and M-1 not really being serious about a fight and it seems like the managers and fighters are not on the same page, like ever.

I think that is the big issue that would fit the pieces together. If Overeem had already made that decision and started training for that and M-1 knew it then this whole thing is really going to stink. The timing of the whole thing is awful fishy.

by who me on Aug 25, 2010 8:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Yep

I see they added a link to Dave Walsh’s interview with Boon (good job DW!). It sounds as if they wanted to hype up an Overeem fight so it would look as if they had options while they negotiated the NYE Barnett fight with FEG. Dave, is this the correct reading? Or do you think they intentionally waited to call him out after they knew he wasn’t available? Also, what does this do to their NYE negotiations with FEG now that they know there’s no plan B for Fedor (except maybe Bigfoot)?

by John Nash on Aug 25, 2010 8:26 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

M-1 isn’t even good with manuvering and leverage anymore apparently, there is something up with them. It’s nuts that they thought they could pull this and get away with it. Wonder if Fedor knew about Overeem already deciding on K-1?

by who me on Aug 25, 2010 9:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Here's Overeems answer to Ariel Helwani's question "Emelianenko has now said that he would like to fight you by the end of the year. Is that possible at this point?"
No, unfortunately not. The reason is because if I enter the Final 16 and win, I will fight the K-1 Final in December. My decision was made because nothing was certain and Strikeforce and M-1 didn’t act fast enough when I made my decision to start K-1 training. Now I read on the internet that Fedor and his management want to fight me all of sudden. Do they really need two months of thinking and negotiating? I think it’s a little strange to be honest. If Fedor challenged me right after the fight it would have been something to take in consideration, but the M-1 management started to say that all the polls on several websites stated that people rather have a Fedor vs. Werdum rematch then a fight against me. There we have another lie by M-1 because every poll I have read stated the opposite and showed that everybody want to see Fedor versus me. Check their current poll at their own Web site (laughs).

It appears the call-out to Overeem came after M-1 knew Overeem had already committed to the K-1 tourney…

He had been tucked away in Japan for two years already. Why not face Arlovski on SHO? He was fighting guys like Gary Goodman, Fujita, and Hunt in Japan during that time. Why not come back and defend your belt against Arlovski? And now take another year before getting in a Strikeforce cage. It’s kind of ridiculous all around for all involved.

strikeforce did not offer him any fights in that time. He wasn’t even under contract for most of that time. He fought for the belt with a talent exchange with K1, he was brought in as an opponent for Buentello, but as usual with Strikeforce, the plan for one guy to win failed.

He pulled out of some fights last year, but there appeared to be legit reasons for that. The time for whining about Overeem not defending the belt is over. The debate to strip him ended when they brought him back and let him fight rogers. His commitment to k1 has been known by everyone. If they wanted to keep him out of k1 this year, they needed to act quicker.

The stage is being set for Ubereem's arrival to the UFC.

It seems like Alistair is setting himself up for a sort of end game with Strikeforce. By refusing to fight unworthy or unreasonable opponents and basically calling his bosses incompetent he’s pretty much saying he’s ready to move on. That and the window for attaining his goal of being a K-1 champ is very limited. I wouldn’t be surprised if he rode K-1 out until they fold. Then he can head happily to the UFC, knowing he gave his all to K-1.

I don't understand.

Why does Overeem get to hold on to the belt when he has defended it once in three years? Why can’t he fight Fedor and fight in K-1. Last year he fought in K-1 and then faced Fujita a few weeks later. Did the same against Rogers. Strikeforce is frustrating me. Strip him of the belt, let Fedor fight Bigfoot in November/December for an interim belt that will be defended when Werdum is ready and Overeem can fight that winner in another three years.

by memitim on Aug 25, 2010 8:12 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

I don't think M-1 has any real intention of letting Fedor fight Overeem

This whole “I want to fight Overeem” came about after it was known he was committed to the K-1 tournament.

No one in their right mind would cancel a good paying gig like the K-1 tourney merely for the chance to maybe fight Fedor if he’s not just being used as a negotiating ploy…

The thing is it was Fedor saying he wanted the fight

not just M-1. M-1 says a lot of shit. Fedor rarely does. Second, Overeem has fought in K-1 and then fought an MMA fight weeks later. Overeem is saying flat out he doesn’t want to fight Fedor. He wants Werdum. Two title defenses in four years then.

by memitim on Aug 25, 2010 9:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Overeem said he wanted the winner of the #1 contender fight (Fedor-Werdum), fully expecting it to be Fedor (as did almost everyone else). Strikeforce pitched the fight the very same way, again, true to form, expecting Fedor to win.

Overeem still wants the winner of the #1 contender fight, as was promised, rather than allowing himself to be used by Fedor/M-1 when they have no real intention of fighting him. Fedor can want the fight, M-1 will not allow it.

He was injured and pulled out of two strikeforce fights in 2009 and he defending it in 2010, if they were going to strip him of the belt it would of been before that defense not after it because it makesno sense to do it now. Of course he wasn’t under contract with Strikeforce in 08 and they offered him no fights so for most of the time he wasn’t defending that belt the blame lies on Strikeforce not him. He needs to defend it more often now but then as everyone says the strikeforce belts don’t have much meaning anyway so nobody cares if they are defended or not (apparently including Strikeforce).

And your argument is that as a result, a guy coming off a loss should challenge for the belt. Again. Because if Overeem doesn’t defend it to a guy coming off of a loss, the belt is ruined.

My argument is, Fedor should have to win a fight before he can challenge for the belt. I anxiously wait your surely genius level logic that will somehow twist this into the only possible outcome being good for Fedor, Evegni.

He said if he couldn’t fight Werdum he’d fight in K-1 and that’s exactly what he’s doing.

By the way, Andrew Simon from HDNet sent this to our Twitter:
there never was a dream 17 in the books, so how is it cancelled? Wouldn’t be till next year!

Well.

HDNet also still has the K-1 MAX Finals scheduled for Oct. 25, which Kogan says isn’t set in stone yet.

At first, I was starting to hate Overeem for what appeared to be him dodging Fedor, but after hearing what he has to say, I completely agree with him. He is a better match maker than Scott Coker. Why should the champ of an organization have to repeatedly fight guys coming off a loss??

Does he have a Champions Clause in his contract? I know his was signed a few years ago, before they were all the rage in smaller promotions. If he could win two more fights in Strikeforce, I’d love to see him in UFC, there would be some fun matchups.

Good!

This leaves Fedor hanging. Now, instead of making the absolute financial killing they would have made by signing with the UFC, M-1 is screwed. They’re making nothing! NOTHING! Starve those bastards out. If Fedor gets tired of slipping in the rankings due to inactivity following a huge loss, maybe he’ll force the issue. If not, oh well, he’s basically becoming irrelevant anyway.
